Euro 2024: England Thread

Two qualifiers for Euro 2024 in June.

Malta and North Macedonia.

Southgate likes to keep things settled Dan Burn is unlucky not to get a call up in defence.

I agree good to see Eze back in, he's a very nice player to watch pretty much two footed and glides along the pitch.

A couple of thumping victories against Malta and North Macedonia.

Rashford was very good last night and had the right back on toast. I think Saka and Rashford will be the wingers going forward into the remaining qualifiers and the tournament itself.

TAA looked pretty good in midfield and if you add Bellingham in there we’ve got a quality team in all areas.

I think in some of the bigger games we might see Grealish start ahead of Rashford to try and keep the ball a little bit better then use Rashford as the impact player.

A lot can change in 12 months but this England side to me look capable of winning the euros if everyone stays fit, the big threat is obviously France.

Alexander-Arnold may have found a role in the team as well don't see him being a starter but again he could be a useful sub in the midfield when England are ahead, those quick balls over the top will be a nightmare for a team that's trying to push on to us.

Ukraine away tomorrow before a friendly with the Scots next week.

Few new faces called up to this one Colwill from Chelsea, Tomori earns a recall, Eze gets in again and Nketia gets a call up. Ward-Prowse unlucky not to be called up after his great start at West Ham same could be said for Bowen. Just so much quality in the wide areas for Bowen to compete against.

The selection of Maguire and Phillips raised concerns given their lack of playing time at club level as did the selection of Henderson.

TAA and Grealish pulled out injured

England have got a good squad fantastic attacking options that would be the envy of any nation but the concern has to be at centre back and central midfield is becoming a growing issue.

Foden is such a incredible player to watch, can take the ball and get it under control from almost any angle and on the turn.

His speed of thought is as good as any player out there.

Yeah a very good player. Any other team in the league he would be starting week in week out but not always in the City side.

England are a class above Scotland tonight. Think our front players have been very good.

For years we questioned the technical ability of English players that has clearly been addressed the question now is can we handle the pressure mentally and find a balanced side capable of winning a major tournament.

I love watching Bellingham, so pleased he didn't go to a prem team.

I think he's probably one of the best young players I've seen.

Will defo win ballon d'or

Got to feel for Maguire, the crowd were taking the piss from minute one when he came on. You’ve got to be very mentally tough to cope with the mocking/abuse.

Shame about the own goal and just unlucky really.

An unlucky mistake. He probably had to stick his foot out to stop the cross, just unlucky it went into his own net.

He is playing at a ridiculous level above and beyond all the hype having only just turned 20. I love watching him play and have not been so excited to watch a young footballer play, for a long time.

Not sure why, England has always produced technically gifted players, just a shame the cowards at the FA have always gone for Managers who preferred runners and grafters, and overlooked those who could produce moments of magic and wanted to entertain.

I don't think we've ever produced them in this volume though especially attacking players.

Does feel a bit now or never for quite a few in this group Walker, Maguire, Stones, Trippier, Henderson and Kane could all be looking at this one as their last tournament.

Whatever happens I feel this should be Southgate's last tournament time to let someone else take it on but the question will be who is available to take that job?

I think we need a more attack minded coach.

The obvious choice is Potter

The obvious choice is Potter
Not so obvious these days. Brighton have arguably improved since his departure and he was unable to make any impact at Chelsea.

Those points don't prove he's not a good manager, but they do suggest he's been hyped up a tad.

Think it's harsh on Potter he improved them a lot from where he picked them up under Houghton is a credit to the club really that his departure hasn't stopped their progress. Chelsea I think he deserves a pass on really that club was a mess when he came in and continued to be that I think any manager would have failed in those circumstances.

Potter or Howe will likely be the popular choices. I do think the national team manager should be English and the talk of getting Pep in is ridiculous.

I don't think it comes down to being more attacking I think there's maybe a bit of extra loyalty with Southgate to some players who've maybe had their time and need to move on.

The only comparison I can make is this is how previous generations must have felt about watiching Big Dunc.

I think for my generation it's Rooney level stuff. Watching him at 18 was watching a boy in a mans body and by the time he was in his early 20's like Bellingham is now he was one of the best in the world in his position playing at the very highest levels.

Maybe so, but surely Potter needs another success to prove his credentials. Big gamble otherwise.

What credentials did Southgate have? He's probably our second best manager of all time.

Any England manager needs to build the team around Bellingham and Foden, the two outstanding talents of their generation.

So what do you do with Saka? A player who's been quality for both club and country in the last 12 months?

Born too late.

Worthington, Bowles, Marsh, Currie, Hudson et al, our own Gordon Hill, the list is endless, all had unbelievable ability to beat their man and get bums off seat but were usually overlooked for effort players. And I doubt that list got 50 caps between 'em. Which is criminal.

And the French, Italian, West Germans would have built their team around somebody like Matt Le Tissier, a potential Ballon d'Or winner, but not in England, nah he's lazy ....

Think Southgate will end up at United, or stay with England till he gets his calling.

Football was different back then less foreign players and less European club football so we'll never really know how well these lads would have done against the best from around the world. The players coming through now are mixing it with the best from around the world every week in club football and not only holding their own but standing out.

Le Tissier I always felt was a tad over rated and his reluctance to leave Southampton and play at a higher level probably cost him that chance. Didn't want to leave his comfort zone which is fine and his decision to make.

I grew up with the golden generation they could have won a tournament especially Euro 2004 but the breaks went against us couldn't hold our nerve in penalty shoot outs.

I don't think Southgate will get anywhere near the Utd job and he shouldn't until he proves himself in the club game. Being a great international manager doesn't make you a great club manager.

I don't agree, Rooney was a a great young player, but raw, powerful.

Bellingham has the lot. close control, skill, shooting, passing, vision, he can control a game at aged 20. That control, vision andpass for Kanes goal....wow

I don't think we've ever seen a young English player this good at 20.

I think that is harsh on Rooney he was an unbelievable player and had he not been injured probably would have helped England win euro 2004 at only 18 years old.

All those things you listed Rooney was doing at the same age and he carried on doing them for pretty much a decade.

This isn't a slight on Bellingham he's a great player and like Rooney he's fearless.

I don’t think Southgate will get a top club job when he leaves England. Someone like Everton may take him but it wouldn’t be anything higher than that level for me.
