Erik ten Hag | United trigger contract extension

It also didn't make any back pages. I went and wasted money on 3 papers and couldn't find any reference towards it.

read them online, it was all over them

Sun today, 4th thing down says

Travel hell for England fans and Southgate tactics slammed by Ten Hag

Before you say it, I know he probably didn't slam them. The point I make is, everything he says will be exploited, especially as the press probably are going to jump on the ETH out after his first loss.

I think taking that job was a mistake, especailly commenting on tactics after his season.

He should be concentrating on united, not getting in the papaers talking Rashford, board, tuchel etc.

And I happen to think the Rashford comment isn't going to help his confidence or their relationship.

It was interesting that Ten Hag mentioned they still need to negotiate a new contract. I wonder whether he’s so frustrated and angry at how things were conducted that there’s a small part of him thinking he might just walk away? Or not sign a new deal right now and see how it goes? He’s now got the leverage and stronger position with United deciding he is their man after all.

Again, I don't think he should talk about the board like that.

He's on there to talk about the game he's watching.

I keep reading that United are prioritising a CB this summer? And also a striker is high on their list. And whilst I get that I don’t get this obsession they seem to have about not trying to improve CM? Their midfield is so bad!

I’ve seen today (just a rumour) that they will sign a midfielder if Casemiro is sold? Surely they need to sign a midfielder if he stays and 2 if he leaves? Not only is their midfield awful but it lacks depth and Mainoo needs help next year.

Rumours we've made a bid for Fermin Lopez so a midfielder is on the cards. I'd say the big to transfers are a CB to partner Martinez and a CM to partner Mainoo unless Casemiro has been playing with an injury we don't know about then his legs have gone.

Xavi Simons is another player we are rumoured to be in for. So there are rumours circulating about midfielders.

They better get used to it he calls a spade a spade, he`s a bit clumsy with it but its hard to see him changing he comes across as very stubborn.

I think he needs to get wise to what club he manages and we he can and can't say

Sounds a bit fishy this Hake fella but he has a reputation for being a hardliner disciplinarian...Sancho will be bricking his nappy.

Would be great to have Ruud back in any capacity.

That Hake guy is known for being a bit brutal. Seems out of touch with the times.

Yeah work permits being sorted for the new coaches according to reports so should be announced soon.

Tells me they still don't fully trust in ETH, and neither do I. We shall see.

My prediction is he's gone by christmas if he persists with the same style and amasses no dominant wins with consistency, as that's what is required to win a league.

He's survived for now.

I think if he’s in the top 4 race by the half way mark he’s probably ok but if we still look a shambles it’ll be hard to justify carrying on.

This new deal just feels like a bit of housekeeping rather than a big sign of faith.

Yeah, agree.

I hope he does well. I'd like nothing more than to just have a really enjoyable season this year. I'm getting quite tired of us doing nothing in terms of the league. A cup here and there makes up for some things, but on the whole he has to do more.

12 months ago we’d finished 3rd and were thinking it’s time to push on.

3 years ago we’d finished second with the same feeling under Ole.

Last year was a big step back and that’s the instability that has to stop, we need to accept we finished where we deserved last season and do something to put that right.

4th should be seen as the worst case not an achievement going forward.

Well in year three you'd be expecting any manager to have in place a contingent of players they're happy with, and be able to use them for at minimum a title challenge. That's what I'd be expecting from my manager/coach at this point. I don't think he'll be able to live up to that so the only conclusion I could come to is to sack him at the end of this season without meeting those requirments. It's push City this year or it's time to look for someone new. I honestly won't care about cups this year, they wouldn't save him if it was up to me. Maybe if he won two cups... but I can't see that happening.

Lots of coaching personnel changes which is a big positive, ETH will have the backing in all departments and things HAVE to improve .

All sounds a bit odd.

He was on TV talking about his new deal. Now there is no deal they have just used the year extension he had, under the same terms.

They have got rid of his back staff and are replacing them.

Something seems a bit off to me.

Sounds like he needs to get off to a cracker or he's gone.

Not really the new contract we thought would bring some stability.

We don't know who's going from the back room staff yet and who's decision it was to let them go.

Ramsey left last season to take a job in MLS and wasn't replaced and we don't know who else is leaving.

I think the contract stuff is a bit of easy PR to settle down the noise around the change in ownership. SJR/Ashworth have now both publicly backed him by extending his contract by 1 year. On paper now he's their guy so if they sack him it's on them they can't point back to the previous regime and blame them.

something today said the board got rid of Benni and are about to pump van der gaag

What I meant was, there was talk of a 3 year deal. ETH went on TV and spoke about it (rumours board weren't happy) and now it's just triggering his year extension.

something seems off.

Not that I fancy ETH, but really they needed to back him properly. Now it's just talk about how fragile his position is.

Ineos not off to a great start for me.

McCarthy was from memory a short term position he only ever had a 2 year deal as ETH wanted a younger coach in his coaching group. His role was more an intern type position than a long term thing.

I doubt Ten Hag would let the club sack his assistant and force coaches into his group. All the reporting I've read are the new coaches are ETH picks and changes he's in full control over.

ETH doesn't strike me as the sort of man who'd put up with being messed about when it comes to his staff.

On the contract all I ever heard was it was likely to be a 1 year extension to his current deal rather than a long term contract.

I think the new owners have done a great job so far.

6 months in
1) All the directors who created this mess are gone (bar the ones named Glazer).
2) New directors appointed and proper experienced operators put into the key senior positions not just jobs for the boys and yes men.
3) £50m training ground refurbishment underway and should be complete for summer 2025.
4) Can't say I'm a fan of them making people redundant but if the club is over staffed it has to be addressed. Compared to our rivals who are out performing us we have a huge head count.
5) Group setup to come up with a plan for the stadium works.

The next bit is the difficult bit can they reshape that first team squad and deal with some of the long term lingering issues which are mainly players who need to leave the club. That one will be judged when the summer window closes.

As for ETH well we'll know if the decision to stick with him was a good one in 12 months time.

As for the redundancies we have 1,150 staff…City have 520.
Im not sure if that was partly down to us being a much bigger club to manage or shear waste and incompetence.
