England Discussion 2025

Does that rule only apply to international football, and not other sports, what about our cricket team?

Plus there are plenty of football nations that have foreign coaches.

It doesn't matter to me where the coach is from. No rules are being broken.

JFH was a coach with Southgate, is that ok? where do you draw the line.

I think the principle should apply across the board in all sport if it’s international competition rather than club competition.

The idea is meant to be you vs us but those boundaries have become a lot more blurry.

I've seen quite a lot of talk about his assistant Anthony Barry.

He apparently was really highly rated at Chelsea and was seen as one of the best to come through our coaching courses.

He's worked under Tuchel at Chelsea and Bayern but also with a few international setups under Roberto Martinez.

You wonder if this is the guy they're grooming for the longer term as you assume Tuchel will only do the world cup then go on to something else.

Will definitely be interesting to see how many full backs he names as that could be a good clue on his formation.

Also do we think Rashford has done enough to get a recall? I don’t believe he’s scored yet for Villa but every time Asensio scored it seems he’s the one assisting!

Would like to see some new talent blooded, so the likes of Nwaneri and Gittens.

One thing for sure is there will be a distinct lack of United players! Maguire will probably be the only one. Not counting Rashford as our player anymore.

I can't see Rashford getting a call up he's found a little bit of form as an impact sub but he's yet to score a goal for Villa and we've got so many players for those positions. If he keeps it up to the end of the season and adds a few goals he might be able to get a call up because he gives something different to the other players which is being a bit more direct. Our other wide options are a bit more technical.

The formation will be interesting we don't have loads of quality wing backs and centre backs so not sure going with a back 3 is the right way forward for England.

I think he'll probably stick with the 4-2-3-1 Southgate used but he can't fall into the trap of trying to fit everyone in that killed us at the Euro's.

I don't think there will be any Utd players I reckon he'll be looking to move on from Maguire.

Not sure on Maguire to be honest, I think he will want him in there for the experience and he has very rarely let England down. There isn’t a whole lot of centre backs knocking about like you say, so would very surprised if he wasn’t in that first squad.

I think we have so many attacking players but defensively there does seem to be a lack of options. Left back seems to be where we are really struggling. Lewis Hall would have been a shoe-in but he went down injured, then obviously there is Shaw. Although Chilwell might get a look in as Tuchel knows him well.

You are maybe right about Rashford but again I wouldn’t be totally surprised if he was selected.

My guess is he'll look to build a Guehi and Branthwaite partnership through qualifying as Maguire/Stones are getting more injury prone so think it's time to move on from them. He might take them in the squad next summer but not sure he'll use them as starters if that partnership gels.

You have to assume Mitchell will get a call up from Palace as a left back option. There's the young lad at Arsenal Lewis-Skelly who'll probably be in as well now Hall is injured. I don't see him calling up Shaw even when he's fit.

The right back spot is also up for grabs we have got to move on from Trippier and Walker now. Personally I don't think we can play with TAA as a right back and win things he's to big a liability, Reece James can't stay fit so he's not really an option.

We're almost a year on from the euro's and I don't think we really saw under Carsley players coming in to fix the problems we had in the summer. There's a lot of places up for grabs below are the ones I think are nailed on starters.

Pickford

??? Guehi ??? ???

Rice ???

Saka Bellingham ???

Kane

Sounds like Quansah and Walker in and Branthwaite not.

A few surprising picks so far, none more so than Dan Burn. A solid pro but not sure on that one.

If Henderson is back then just sack him already :D

Walker and Henderson? Bloody hell Tuchel, you’ve lost me already!

Henderson over someone like Wharton is a bit of a joke to be honest.

Branthwaite isn't injured, he's just been left out. Very odd.

Henderson's been chosen for the experience he brings, there's no other reason. Not that I agree with it.

Finding it hard to care though.

I’m feeling very much the same about England these days. Beyond the major tournaments I struggle to care about them and very rarely watch any NL/qualifying matches.

The Henderson one is strange even if he does have experience. Quansah over Maguire/Branthwaite is also a strange choice.

I guess Tuchel won’t please everyone with his selections and we’ll all have our views on who he should pick.

Yeah i don't watch a single international game outside of the summer tournaments

Yeah, the tounaments are my only real interest too, but even they're a struggle - the last one was absolute crap.

Supposedly the top tier of football...

Tuchel thinks Henderson will bring energy to the team at 35... his words on BBC Sport... maybe we dodged a bullet here.

Maguire apparently asked to be left out due to injury. Been playing with a knock recently and wants to give it time to heal.

Cole Palmer has pulled out missed the game yesterday with an injury.

Gibbs-White called up as a replacement.

Dan Burn must be a doubt due to a monumental hangover.

Tuchel is supposed to a bit of a wierdo, some of the selections seem to justify it.
I’m the same not that interested

I thought Tuchel was meant to bring about change? That’s essentially the same players in a similar system isn’t it?

Stones, Guehi, Trippier, Mainoo and Saka all missing from the side at the euros.

So yeah same formation but he’s changed half the team.

Everyone playing in their natural position is helping.

Must have been great odds on Lewis Skelly being the first scorer on the Tuchel era.

He was ok in the bits I saw.

Direct, full of energy and played 1 beauty of a cross field ball (like the one in the cup final) but no real pay off at the end.

Was helped as Bellingham played quite close to him and combined well.

Foden on the other side was anonymous.

Tuchel said after the game he wanted more from the wide players
