David De Gea leaves United

Was it time for him to be replaced? I have no issues with that but as a shot stopper he has been better than Onana and not only during his time at United. Time will tell if Onana is a better keeper or not but I am not sure he ever will be. There are much better keepers than Onana and that position could have been filled this year instead of getting Onana and getting a top quality DM instead of a short time replacement like Cas.

Thing is the stats (which can obviously lie) suggest that on shot stopping they're equal, haven't got time to go and look at the Xg stats but from memory last season Onana performed slightly above Xg which is what you want from a keeper.

This is premier league only and number of games is obviously very different shows that De Gea was incredibly consistent over his career.

De Gea 72.2% save success 415 games
Onana 72.2% save success 39 games

I think the real test of Onana will be how he performs with a more stable back 4 in front of him any keeper will have struggled with that shambles in front of him.

think De Gea was probably the busiest keeper in the league for about 5 years.

We faced a lot of shots last year, not sure how many made the target.

so these stats are a bit useless unless it says how many shots on target they faced

Since you bought it up.

De Gea across his premier league career averaged 3 saves per game whereas Onana averaged 4 saves per game. Onana's stat is somewhat skewed by a small sample size for Onana in a season where he faced a ridiculous number of shots.

2023/24 Onana 149 saves 72% success rate
2022/23 De Gea 101 saves 70% success rate
2021/22 De Gea 128 saves 69%
2020/21 De Gea 60 saves 65% (he only played 26 games this season)
2019/20 De Gea 96 saves 73%
2018/19 De Gea 122 saves 69%
2017/18 De Gea 115 saves 80%

Save success doesn't factor in shots off target it only deals with shots on target.

Like I said the stats aren't perfect but what you can see is a bit of a pattern 2017/18 was the absolute peak of super hero De Gea shot stopping after that things settled down and his shot stopping actually became very comparable to the shot stopping we saw from Onana last season.

The other bit that also needs to be said in the interest of fairness is most of the major balls ups by Onana happened in the champions league which the above doesn't consider.
