Was it time for him to be replaced? I have no issues with that but as a shot stopper he has been better than Onana and not only during his time at United. Time will tell if Onana is a better keeper or not but I am not sure he ever will be. There are much better keepers than Onana and that position could have been filled this year instead of getting Onana and getting a top quality DM instead of a short time replacement like Cas.
Thing is the stats (which can obviously lie) suggest that on shot stopping they're equal, haven't got time to go and look at the Xg stats but from memory last season Onana performed slightly above Xg which is what you want from a keeper.
This is premier league only and number of games is obviously very different shows that De Gea was incredibly consistent over his career.
De Gea 72.2% save success 415 games
Onana 72.2% save success 39 games
I think the real test of Onana will be how he performs with a more stable back 4 in front of him any keeper will have struggled with that shambles in front of him.
