Cricket 2024

Handed this game on a silver platter! A part-timer and a bowler who is liable one bad ball an over to open? There is a lot to admire about Stokes’ captaincy but this is just wrong.

India looked to be coasting, then we took wickets in a cluster to get them down to 120/5 but now they are recovering. Only need 40 more to win.

I think if India do win then the difference are the spinners. India have ones with a bucketload and we have now two inexperienced guys. They have bowled great but that Indian spin bowling in our second innings was world class.

You have to factor in how good their footwork was against the spin. It was a beauty to watch a player come down to the pitch and play a forward defensive stroke instead of trying an agricultural scythe.

Yeah all Indian batsman grow up playing spin so they are so comfortable against it even when it’s ragging. They had a wobble but Gill and Jurel played superbly.

It’s so difficult to win against such a good spin attack. The fact Kuldeep is their 3rd or 4th choice spinner speaks volumes, most other countries he would be prime number 1. Ashwin and Jadeja are just masters of spin in Indian conditions.

Hopefully we can dust ourselves down and get a consolation win in the fifth test.

Two of the best innings I have seen ( not video) was against India by two Sri Lankans incidentally. One was their first test ever outside of Sri Lanka and against India in those days Madras and now Chennai. I have never seen a more stylish innings than Roy Dias 97 in their second innings. He never hit a six and if my memory serves me right most of his runs were 4s. Down on one knee and his cover drive is a sight to behold. Incidentally Mendis hit 105 in each innings. He hit is first century with a six and in the second innings came down the wicket and lifted it for a 4 to get his second. I am sure he was going for a six too.
How on Earth, Aravinda played that innings in the World Cup semi final against India no one knows. Later on I asked Anil Kumble about that innings and he shook his head and said the best player he has played against.

Remember Dias and Duleep Mendis who played against England in Sri Lanka's inaugural Test match in '82, and vaguely remember watching Mendis batting against the West Indies at the '75 World Cup in England, but can still remember their batting line-up from that day, Fernando, Warnapua, Tennekoon, Heyn, Tissera, Mendis and Ranasinghe - but ask me what I had for my tea yesterday and I haven't got a clue!

And Mendis nearly matched his two hundreds in a match against England a few years later, and you sensed a few of the England players were gutted for him when he just came up short in the second innings.

Swiftly moving on

--------

Shocker from England on day one of the fifth Test, they usual do so well in dead runners as well.

England 218 all out
India 135-1(30)

There's only one guarantee from here on in and that's that Jadeja will rip through England in their 2nd innings, and Kuldeep and Aswin who shared 9 wickets in the first innings will be looking on admiringly.

I personally know the guy who opened the batting against Australia in the same WC. We at one time worked together. He told me that when Thompson was bowling all he sees is a red flash. Scored 50 odd and was flattened and retired hurt.

Don't know why you bother JC, you try and show an interest ....
You’re talking about stuff way before my time!

India piling on the runs today and 376-3 at tea. This game is well and truly done but hopefully we can show some application in the second innings. Some of our batsman shot making and commitment to their wickets is shocking. I am all for aggressive play but it’s got to be done right. These Indian batters are showing how to do it today.

I know the forum rocks along at an alarming pace, but even still I think it was obvious who that post was aimed at, feel guilty now ....

India finish day two on 473-8(120), only 255 ahead!

England being well and truly bazballed.

Some achievement.

Should retire or be retired from Test cricket now, and give Lancashire CCC a couple of seasons mentoring the quicks before calling it a day.

I guess he’ll want another 9 at least to overtake Warne into second place.

I think we will see him in the summer but maybe he walks away after that but the guy is still fit and healthy so wouldn’t be surprised if he carries on.

There are not a flurry of outstanding quick’s to come in and replace him. There are a few like Tongue and Potts but it’s such huge boots to fill.

Outstanding achievement, I doubt a seamer will ever get close to 700 again what with the reduction in Test cricket with all the other forms coming into the game.

Has he mentioned doing that anywhere, and if he has would Warney dying fairly recently have change his thinking on that - can imagine him retiring from Test cricket before the start of the new season and saying "do you know what I've done alright and the only bowlers ahead of me are probably the two best spinners of all time, and now it's time to give somebody else a go, someone like young Stuart Broad deserves a chance lol"

I seriously doubt anybody that's started playing Test cricket in the last 5/6 years whether spinner or seamer will even get close to 500 wickets, never mind 700, unless the powers that be have a rethink, which they won't, which is sad.

Think the top batting and bowler figures are set in stone.

I think if he is delivering then he should be given the chance to over take Murali too. Incidentally many people believe that he is a chucker. I actually had a talk with Michael Holding who was on his way back from the ICC meeting in Dubai where they decided the outcome. He said he was very shocked to see that everyone was chucking apart from Chanderpaul. He called it flexing and he said if they have to ban him then all the bowlers including McGrath etc would be banned. And they showed that Murali had an unbelievable rotation on his wrists. He also said that these days medical and science has improved a lot they are understanding a lot more of what goes on in the sports.

England vs Scotland in the T20 WC today.

So far the pitches have been a little slow, so only a couple of big scores so far. Although bowlers being a little bit more in the game is better than the IPL where 220+ seemed to be the norm.

Without being negative, or posting just to have a go, can I ask what people find good about cricket? My brain just won't have it. I've never understood it.

I can understand Tennis and even to a degree American football, Ice Hockey, even Baseball etc, but not this.

Guess it’s what you like isn’t it. I just like the battle between bat and ball. I do like to watch the games where loads of runs are scored but also like the battles won by the bowler.

The iconic 2005 Ashes series is what got me into cricket, so I got into it in the most exciting test series ever and have enjoyed it ever since.

I find American Football dull as dishwater but I know lots of people who love it. Different strokes for different folks.

Yeah, you won't find me watching American Football either, I just get why people would watch it and all the other sports mentioned. I just couldn't find anything appealing at all when watching Cricket.

I guess that is it though, you either like it or you don't.

Just wondered what people who like it, get from it.

Some of the drama involved in cricket you cannot get elsewhere where every ball can end the game there. Stokes vs Australia at Headingley was a thing of beauty to watch and one of my favourite ever sporting moments.

I get down to Oval quite often now days as i've got a season ticket in terms of a day out it's excellent as you're catching up with friends having a few beers and watching topclass sport for 7 hours and the season falls really well in terms of it being the football off season.

Thanks, for sharing.

That first bowl was brutal. Destroyed his helmet! Didn't actually realise they were bowling with that much power. I guess the big leg guards make more sense to me now.

I actually wacthed that video and it doesn't seem as bad in highlights mode.

The faster bowlers are sending the ball down at 90 MPH plus. For us it's Archer and Wood. The balls rock hard and for your average person you'd just be standing there and whacked before you had a chance to react and in serious pain.

Yeah, I remember from school, we played a bit of cricket back then. The balls are defintely rock hard. I remember deliberately avoiding catching them!

Not gonna lie, don't think I'd be up for 90mph rocks being hurled at me.
