Casemiro | Match Discussion Thread 2023/24

Wasn’t fit.

Was reported as doubtful at the press conference on Friday.

Take the conversation off an old match thread.

Sounds like he's going to be out for a while.

We will miss him because we are short of options in midfield and he chips in a few goals too.

Hasn't been at anywhere near his best in a long time hopefully the time off will see him return at the best version of Casemiro.

ETH confirms he doesn’t expect Casemiro to be back from injury until after Christmas.

I reckon there’s a chance he’s sold to Saudi in January if Utd can get an offer that covers the FFP. Same for Varane

They wouldn't sell Maguire without a replacement, be odd to sell Varane

I can't see them selling anyone bar Sancho really

I think Casemiro was always a short term solution to a long term problem. I cannot doubt his influence last season but this season has been a mixture of bad form and injuries.

If someone offered us some decent money in January then I think you have to strongly consider taking it. But I suspect that it’s more likely to happen in the summer if it was to happen.

A big couple of months for Amrabat and McTominay coming up.

I think getting Mainoo fit is crucial. I hear he is with the youth team again tomorrow for the YCL rather than the main squad. I think that good to ease him back rather than throw him straight into the team.

I think by January, this season is another write off and if offers are there they’ll be tempted to take them. If he left we still have 4 CBs to pick from.

I think like Casemiro they can see Varane has lost a step and they’ll need to be looking to replace him.

I wouldn’t be against letting Casemiro leave if United can reinvest the money back into the squad in January.

If Mainoo is looking comfortable at the level and Amrabat settles in then I think they could sell Casemiro and not replace him in January if the offer was good enough.

We paid £60m for him and for FFP purposes we write off £15m per year on him so if they've got an offer of over £30m for him in January they can basically write off his FFP and free up space in both the transfer and wage budget for next summer.

Liverpool got £40m for Fabinho in the summer he is a bit younger than Casemiro but his reputation doesn't match Casemiro's.

Do we think Casemiro signing was ultimately a mistake? Obviously helped us last season but not sure we will get much else out of him going forward.

He could come back and still be influential for us but I do think we should be moving on to other long term targets.

Think we all knew the risks going in it was a lot to pay for a guy who at 30 had a lot of mileage on the clock and is coming to a much quicker league. I think I hoped we’d get at least 2 good years from him but I must say at this point I’m not sure we will even get that.

I guess without him we dont win a cup last season, we dont get top 4 and we don’t reach the FA cup final. However, could that 60m have been spent better on a player who wasn’t going to burn out within 2 years? Probably yes. That’s basically what we were willing to spend on De Jong but he didn’t want to come it felt like Utd got stuck on that signing for far to long last summer.

I think if the club can get a decent chunk of the money back and move him on then you could say as a short term fix it worked but he needs to be replaced.

Both the midfield signings last summer were short term fixes neither was a player that you could say was going to be the foundation of your midfield in the longer run.

He turns 32 in February.

A break might do him some good in terms of recharging the batteries but he is no longer able to get the ball quickly and that means he makes fouls rather than tackles. The Premier League is so fast that once your legs start going a bit you get found out quickly.

I don’t think we can rely on him being a starter in every game next season if he stays and I don’t think he’d want that role it’s why he left Madrid.

Club confirms he’s back in light training.

Shouldn't be to long before he is back in action.

One of his better performances of the season. That was Casemiro of last year. Never a penalty, utterly ridiculous decision. Looking forward to seeing more of Casemiro and Mainoo.

Silly yellow card at the start of the game but excellent after that hopefully will be fit enough to get through 90 minutes soon.

Wins so many set pieces in both boxes.

Highlight of the match for me was the embrace between Casemiro and EtH when McTominay scored, the press will have been dejected, primed with their Casemiro furious at being take off articles.

He was decent again. Earlier in the season I thought his legs were gone and he was done but he’s been good since returning from injury. His positioning and awareness has made a difference.

Still think he’s getting up to full speed but agree he makes a huge difference.

Only his sometimes late lunges are the only worry. He does some wonderful unfancied stuff and brings calmness and control. I remember a moment in the first half when he told to Maguire to make a lofted or lobbed pass and Maguire chose to pass it on the ground to Dalot. Soon, Cas was seen to make the lofted pass. So calm and confident and he also does do his share of defensive heading too.

Think it was good for him to get through 90 minutes always looks like a player who needs a run of games to get himself fully up to speed.

He was better in the second half after a poor first half.

He’s made a difference since returning from injury.

Definitely made a difference since his return from injury. I think you have to accept with him now that he doesn’t have the legs but he brings great experience and quality in the midfield.

That pass he made to Dalot on the right wing just before we scored was pure class.

He is so good in the air.

Might not be able to get across the ground as quickly as he did in his prime but he’s still a hell of a player.

Yeah, it’s imperative United sign a defensive/holding midfielder in the summer.

But someone who is also quick, control the ball and can pass it too. I feel that he is a player like later Rio and RVP who needs special training and not the general training that everyone else does. Who remembers Moyes and the RVP injury with the over training?

This is why I have an issue with our set pieces. We are extremely strong in the air. Yet we never seem to get a near post flick worked on. Maguire, Cas, Varane, Rasmus and when Scott is on, we are extremely strong in the air. Even Shaw.

I think Casemiro makes a huge difference in both boxes on the set pieces the man is just a magnet to the ball in the air.

He reads the flight of the ball so quickly and gets himself in the position to be on the end of it in both boxes.

Attacking wise I think a lot of time the quality of delivery hasn't been good enough this season but recently Bruno I think has improved and Shaw gives us a different angle with the left footer.

Put in a few near post flicks for `Maguire and 9 times out of 10 he is going to flick it to the danger area. Then anything can happen with players like Cas, Varane, Rasmus, and even Scott.

Wish he would stop getting the early yellows gives me the fear saying that the one against villa was bloody ridiculous he didn't touch that wee pratt.
