Bruno Fernandes | Match Discussion Thread 2024/25

Who do you pick?

He consistently sticks his penalties away which we should all be very thankful for.

I get Bruno can be a bit annoying but he's the only guy who you can rely on to be fit every week, plays on when injured, always puts a shift in, takes the responsibility to get on the ball. He's also happy to change position without sulking on the pitch.

The stuff with the refs is annoying but what's even more annoying is just how bad the refs have been this season. I mean just yesterday Brighton could have had 3 separate red cards.

Probably should be a rule that the captain doesn't give them away though ;) Is it 2 or 3 he's given away this season? Needs to learn to keep those arms down.

We saw with Maguire making a guy who's been here 5 minutes captain probably not the smartest idea.

Personally I see the captain's role as 100% about how they conduct themselves off the pitch.

The captain needs to be the person willing to be the voice of the players in interviews, they have to be willing to give up their time to kiss the backside of the sponsors and they need to be someone who turns up every day 100% focused on their job.
So not Bruno then

Gets so much abuse he shouldn't. Because people judge his actions not his football.

To think people were trying to claim Odegaard is better.

People have strong opinions about Bruno, just like you have strong opinions about topics. Got to deal with it.

For me I hold Bruno in high regard so when his standards do slip, it is disappointing. I think he does let his emotions get the better of him sometimes and as a captain you have to set an example.

Cracking finish last night! I think under Amorim he’s been very good.

I think Odegaard is the better technically sound player but there really isn’t much between them. They both have traits where they are better than the other.

Another good game when he’s on his game he looks a level above the rest of the team.

I think once we've got better options in the centre mid spots he will move back into one of the number 10 positions.

Really got a grip on the game in the last half hour as they got tired.

Kept feeding our wide players with quick accurate passes that really stretched their defence.

Rio absolutely spot on with his words. The criticism of Bruno for the past few seasons has been ridiculous when he's been head and shoulders above everyone.

He was absolutely class in the second half. He has to play in midfield in this team, just so that we don’t have to see Casemiro. Fernandes bossed it.

Pretty obvious you build the team around him, well you could if we had a team instead of an in the main a bunch of over rated under performing tossers.

You don’t build a team around anyone.

You build a team that suits everyone.

I’d like to see Bruno in the front 3 next season but for that to happen we need better centre mids.

You do when he `s the only one with a brain he changed the game yesterday when dropped deeper

I'd be for selling Bruno while we can get good wedge and hang on to Mainoo and Garnacho if they were the options.
We're not going to win while we have bruno because the team is years away. He'll be past it by then.
So invest in the youth and cash in on the older quality would be my thinking.
If we didn't need money I'd be saying keep him, of course, he's been our best player since Amorim arrived.

Bruno won't be past it for ages. His game doesn't rely on pace at all.

I don’t think you build a team around Bruno. He’s a player who never much epitomises United over the last few years. You are a moments team. Moments of individual brilliance but also head scratching moments too. He’s exceptionally talented but he’s also not a player who can control a game and he gives the ball away a lot.

Really glad someone else notices this, he is a true "moments" player, drifts in and out of games, fails to make a real impact in a lot of them, but all that gets forgotten when he scores a goal.
He's not the type of player I'd want a team built around, but then, I don't rate him as a captain either

I was going to post about how awful his free kicks are, then he goes an scores his annual one :p

I am a critic of Bruno, but I do think he's been one of the few positives since Amorim arrived, been out best player by miles. And is much better than he was under ETH. Doesn't give away possession so easily.

But his free kicks, and especially corners are bad. His corners hit first man or are direct to the keeper every time. We get a corner, we might as well just give it to them for a goal kick to save time.

We need to find someone else, at least to mix it up a bit.

Our throw ins have improved under Amorim, we don't give possession back so easily.

Thing with the set pieces is who else would you want to take them?

I noticed when fit that Mount took a lot of the corners and Eriksen takes them when he's playing. I think he knows he's not great at them but he's probably still the best option we have.

On the free kicks I'm sure Martinez took one a few weeks back. Bruno's free kicks tend to be better when they're quite close to the edge of the box once it's past 25 yards out not sure he really gets the power and movement on them to beat the keeper. We don't get many free kicks around the box anyway as we don't have players running past defenders.

As always with Bruno I think he needs others to start stepping up and being the game changer it can't always be on him to start the rescue mission when we go behind. Others need to start getting on the ball and making things happen.

He is capable of doing things that few in the world can. His ability to pick a pass, score a goal from nothing, show energy to rally the team. But he’s also gives the ball away a lot and yeah I agree I’m not sure he’s a good captain. But hey we don’t know that.

I think it’s fair and right to say he’s been a positive. I also think it can still be true that whilst he’s been one of the few good players he also isn’t good enough to be part of a team who wants to get back to the top.

Superb tonight. His set pieces were brilliant and he was so good defensively in that second half.

We're going to miss his creativity the most once he does finally leave. Let's hope it's not for a long time yet.

Well deserved MOTM tonight.

Best player on the park by a mile.

He will be sore in the morning after that one.

The guys engine is just phenomenal. I shudder to think where we would be without him!

I would say he might get a rest after this one but no doubt he’ll start against Fulham and go again.

I heard earlier that United’s last 6 goals have come from Fernandes’ set pieces.
Yeah. People saying the style of play has improved is laughable. We haven't scored a goal without a set peice in a long time.

The same people criticised Arsenal recently. It's all hypocritical nonsense. It's laughable how result oriented they suddenly are.

Some set piece goals have been more than welcome.

Who is this they?

Not sure I've heard anybody say what we're watching is good stuff

I have missed Keane’s criticism of Fernandes.

I have missed Keane’s criticism of Fernandes.

Nothing really new basically said he's not a captain or leader.

I thought it was a little bit harsh but it was usual Keane stuff they were bigging up Bruno on the overlap and he just lost it.
