Bruno Fernandes | Match Discussion Thread 2024/25

Gave the ball away 17 times.

So for every chance created he gives it away twice.

As I said not perfect but it’s better than it was earlier in the season.

Most players would dream of those stats.

Bruno is held to such unreal standards its ridiculous. By the end of next season he'll be the third player for United ever to reach 100 goals and 100 assist.

Yet he still doesn't get the respect he deserves.

(I do appreciate that assist weren't recorded as well prior to the 80's and the game was different. But it its still ridiculous)

he's just too inconsistant and frustrating, plays an incredible ball, then puts in two awful corners and gives the ball away sloppily.

However I do think his season is improving.

When he plays in that position he needs to keep a lot better possession of the ball. Not put in 4 to 5 good passes but loses possession a lot more times. Ruud should have taken him off later in the game. His legs were gone.

What percentage of corners do you think the greatest crosser of the ball completed?

Bruno is by far the best player in the squad. It's not close.

Individually yes. But as a team player he is not and especially in the position he plays he needs to keep the possession a lot more.

His corners are crap which must mean the others are even worse.

On the whole, we've been spoilt with his invention/creativity; he's very special in that regard.

I think we do have to accept he isn’t as good as he was in his first few seasons.

There’s been a drop off but he’s still a very good player.

A big challenge for Amorim will be to make the team a collective force that creates chances from multiple people rather than just being focused on Bruno.

To be fair it's quite hard to look like an assist machine if nobody can finish. Bruno would have a lot more assists if there was a proper goal scorer for him to supply. Rashford has been off the boil and the other players just aren't anywhere close to being called goal scorers.

Equally no one else will get assists if Bruno keeps missing chances.

My main issue with him this season hasn’t been his creativity it’s the finishing.

He needs to be chipping in with goals and in the early weeks he missed a lot of good chances that a player of his ability should have taken.

He has admitted that himself.

He's trying to do it all, that's the problem. He realises what I have just said, and is heaping far too much pressure upon himself. He would be playing a lot better if the team actually started chipping in with some creativity and more goals. You can see in a lot of games he's a very frustrated figure right now, and it's been that way for a long time. Other than a purple patch at the end of last season under ETH he's been quite poor and that's not like him. I still think he's got as lot to give in the right setup with the right players. Ideally a goal scorer, like I said.

His decline started in the final Ole season when Ronaldo arrived.

The second half of last season was his best spell in the last 3 seasons. Drove the team to that cup final.

Will be interesting to see how Amorim uses him.

I saw a few chances that he should have passed to other players but he took shots. If he is a creator he should have more pleasure in creating goals than scoring them. Now we have a striker and CF. If he is not getting chances he is going to be rusty and not score goals. The more chances he gets, the better he will get.

Hojlund is struggling to get involved because his link-up play is horrible. Countless times recently I've wacthed as the ball is played to him, and he cannot hold the ball or play it round corners... or even just make the right decisions as to where it should go next. That leaves Bruno having to assist him everything on a plate. It's just not possible.

I do not see him played countless passes when he is in good positions. He is passed when the moment has already gone. Look at the Brighton game. They pass to Pedro when he is free and not when there is no other option. Even then our players do not pass and try. to take on all the defence.

He's never in good positions at the right time, man. That's why you don't see it very often. He's got a lot of learning to do and time to do it, but unfortunately I don't think that's something you can teach.

Most of the goals he has scored have come from rebounds or scruffy pieces of play and just getting lucky. Those are the facts, go watch them.

Thats where I beg to differ. I always see him move and then the pass would not come and then he gets blocked out. creative players need to know when to pass. It is not when they want to pass but when the receiver wants the ball.

I don't see any evidence to support your claim. Fernandes has amazing creativity - do you honestly think he has missed all of these great opportunities to play in Hojlund? It doesn't make sense. If Holjlund was making intelligent runs Bruno would pick him out, it's like his best ability - vision.

I'm afraid it's starting to look like the players don't trust him. A good example is when Zirkzee plays, they all manage to find him. He gets involved, comes deep and plays with them, building up an understanding, and is capable of what Hojlund is not. Nobody wants to pass to a player that cant control a ball well and pass and move, they know doing that is almost certainly going to give the ball back to the oppositon. He needs to work on his close control when under pressure, learn to guard the ball well and then make a run. This is also why Rashford is horrific at CF, because he doesn't have those abilities either. Trust me, they're needed.

I play football with a group of lads every week and we acquire different players each time to make up the numbers - the new guys get a chance, but as soon as people see they can't keep the ball under pressure they don't get passes anymore. It's just the way it works.

Different players have different attributes. Down the memory lane, lots of players especially Fletcher would rarely pass the ball to Berbatov. Now if anyone says he does not have a decent first touch and a good ball control `I do not know what they have been watching. You pass the ball when the receiver wants it. Not when the passer wants it. Now even Bruno gets frustrated when he wants the ball and he does not get it. Zirkzee does not play in the same position as Rasmus. Zirkzee comes deep and plays the runner in if there are any.

If you think Bruno doesn't understand that, I give up.

Not sure about the deeper role but like Eriksen it leaves you exposed defensively.

I wonder if it was just to check the performance of other players that came into the team.

You can’t put him in the midfield 2.

He either goes in the front 3 or on the bench

Shocking pass in the build up to the second goal which is very much the text book bad Bruno bit.

Took his goal well and played a lovely through ball on the first one.

We looked worse when he went off assume just avoiding burn out but when he went off our attack was nullified.

Was ok in the deeper role tonight.

Can’t see him playing there in the derby at the weekend.

I have always felt that he is one of our bigger problems, in the style we want to play. With a Jose team he could be brilliant. Tries hard never gives up, plays the long ball always, whinges a lot and can a brilliant free kick and at penalties too. Just the wrong style for United and him.

5 goals 10 assist on the season already. The guy needs a massive break. He's literally been by far our best attacking player this season.

Everyone already knows what i think the issue surrounding him is. And it's not nice.

I think he gives possession away too easily and I think a good bid we need to change things
But I do agree he's probably been one of the better players recently

Couple of good chances at 1-0 that needed to go in.

His finishing just hasn’t been good enough this season.
