What are your thoughts?

My big worry is that teams will just time waste for 10 minutes. But I definitely think there is space for it in the game.

I'm not a fan all you'll get is teams trying to waste time and being super defensive while they're under the sin bin.

Use the yellow and red cards properly to deal with cynical fouls and dissent and players will quickly adapt their game.

Might be a bit of pain for 5 or 6 weeks at the start of the season but if they're consistent with it this will quickly change.

Alternatively for dissent you could have a new rule where it forces you to be subbed off and if the team has already used their subs then they're down to 10.

Why would a team who's losing waste time?

I just mean it won't be as standard as you make out - there will be things to consider.

Neither mentioned a losing team doing it. But if we went down for 10 mins in the first half at 0-0 you can guarantee it would be 10 mins of time wasting.

Ffs they can’t use var properly don’t give the clowns more to get wrong, being stricter with yellows would suffice, cynical fouls and standing in front of player to prevent them taking a free kick are two that really annoy me but seem to get treated lightly.

Yeah, probably. Then they need to add an additional penalty for this. If said team is seen to be playing anti-football during this ten minutes their player gets an extension of the same amount of time. Simple. Then nobody will even see it as a strategic anything, just accumulating debuff, if they don't just keep playing normally.

Yeah not a fan at all. I think we’ve discussed this previously on a thread somewhere on here and my thoughts were that teams would just time waste while they had a player in the sin bin.

Just use the bloody yellow and red cards, stop trying to tinker with the game with these unnecessary and counter productive measures.

I think there are very good referees about but this blue card idea is just bonkers.

The game doesn’t need more rules it needs better referees.
I think the point is these blue cards won't permanently disable your team like a red or second yellow. The problem refs have is they see the fouls like we do but do they want to give a second yellow for something daft like a push to stop a counter attack? A team losing a man has a lasting effect on the game and more so than not makes it much worse to watch and a poor contest.

This is just going to lead to more players going down and rolling about the ground feigning injury.Do we really need that ?

This becomes self fulfilling though because if you don't punish it in accordance with the rules players will just ignore the rules and push their luck to try and gain an edge.

I do think there needs to be a bit of a change the yellow cards are dished out so quickly now compared to 30 years ago, would it not be a better idea that if you get two yellows you have to be subbed and maybe miss the next game rather than go down to 10 men.

Similar to when players foul out in basketball.

What happens when a team has no more substitutions to make?

Down to 10 men I guess or you just say these incidents don't count as a sub like the concussion ones.

Yeah that wouldn't be open to abuse ....

You're trailing late on, you've used all your permitted subs and you've got a supersub on the bench, what are you gonna do, nothing, or get one of your players to commit a 2nd yellow card offence so you had to sub him!

You could even go further and say a 2nd yellow after the 75th minute and you're down to 10 men to stop that happening.

Whatever system we go for is open to abuse, I just don't like the idea of sin bins.

There's loads of mad ideas I've got, my favourite is getting rid of the penalty for a foul inside the box. You need to keep the box marked on the pitch for the goalkeeper but I'd change the rules so that a foul anywhere on the pitch that directly denies a goal scoring opportunity results in a penalty kick. Everything else just starts with a free kick, if the foul is in the box you restart with a corner.

Please don’t say that idea too loudly. FIFA may jump on it.

I think it's a great idea no more red cards for denial of a goal scoring opportunity the punishment for denying a goal scoring opportunity is and the team gets their chance back.

Sin bins to me is like that stupid 10 yard rule they tried out about 15 years ago.

Not sure why, they work well in Rugby, they even have a countdown timer from 10:00 to Zero.

Might get a bit confusing if the game goes into 10+ minutes of injury time and you got two timers, one from 10 to 0, and one from 0 to 10 next to each other on the screen ....

If that is your favourite please spare us your least favourite ;)

The comparisons between other sports and football in the implementation of rules and technology is irrelevant really. Other sports are very different to football. The sin bins have worked well in rugby but I wouldn’t necessarily say it is transferable to football. Plus there is generally more respect for officials and the rules in rugby as opposed to football. Could the implementation of sin bins improve that respect? Maybe - but you cannot change second nature overnight, if at all. It’s also a hell of a lot easier to waste time in football than rugby.

The IFAB just need to pipe down and fix the game as it is right now instead of trying to implement rules which will increase the chaos in games. There is already so many grey areas like handball, offside and the implementation of VAR.

I seem to remember a couple of months ago there was talk of an orange card and the sin bin. Now it’s a blue card, what colour next? I think the general negative reaction from fans, managers and pundits says everything about the idea.

They have enough trouble with the cards they have and they wanna throw another one into the mix. Hopefully it'll go the way of the silver goal .

Rugby players have a different attitude they don't go out to get a player sin binned whereas every week footballers all over the world are trying to get opposition players booked another card is just gonna make it worse.

Rugby players ain't angels, they spend most of the time trying to hurt each other.

They do have more respect for the officials though as they come from the same class, where football has a problem is 98% of all footballers are dragged up on council estates, and the guy with the whistle 9/10 was born with a silver spoon in their mouths, and that is instantly gonna cause issues - train up young lads who aren't quite good enough to become pro footballers as Referees and the respect issues would disappear overnight, let the Tarquins and Bartholomews do the rugby/cricket.

Yeah another colour card is a nonsense, just give the right colour card at the right time to the right people.

Could just say if you go off after the 80th minute that is it.

I would say a penalty is a stand alone event no rebounds like in a shoot out. If it’s saved or missed restart with a goal kick.

Why 80? Why not 60 mins.

That's just changing for changes sake.

Well it was a counter to your point about injury time so after 80 minutes you'd just say that's your lot.

Yeah that's why I think it's something so minor that it isn't worth bothering with.

My other ideas revolve around the managers and their technical areas not sure how extreme the punishment should be for stepping outside of their technical area though. First off the area should be standardised at all grounds and I feel stepping out of them should either activate some sort of shock collar or it sets off a buzzer and you are forced to remove 1 item of clothing every time it goes off.

It's the same thing it was never officially called an "orange card."

One thing I would say is this works really well in grass roots football they've been doing it for a while at that level and most clubs/refs like it but I just don't think it works for the professional level.

In grass roots for example a lot of leagues have roll on roll off subs which is great in Sunday league football but obviously wouldn't work at the top level.

The royally blessed Managers would love that, "oops did I step into the naughty area again, tut, what am I like"
