Marcus Rashford | Match Discussion thread 2022/23

Very very worrying. If he’s out for a couple of weeks then Martial needs to stay fit and step up.

We all know how that ends he will be crocked again before Rashford is back.

Absolutely gutted especially when Eriksen and Casemiro. Martial, Sancho and Antony need to step up.

Great thing about that interview was the BT pundits not realising the irony that it’s them who forced Utd to be on Saturday be selecting the game for TV.

However, ETH may also regret leaving Rashford on for the full 90 in the last 2 games.

"The forward was withdrawn in the 80th minute of Saturday's 2-0 Premier League win over Everton at Old Trafford and immediately headed to the dressing room for treatment," United said.

"Subsequent assessment of the injury suggested that Marcus will be unavailable for a few games, but is expected to be back for the season run-in."

I guess the best case scenario is that he misses the Sevilla games sandwiched between the Forest game. Fingers crossed we can get him back for Brighton in the FA Cup because think we’ll need him.

3 tough games without him. A couple only 2 days apart...with Martial.....

Well Martial, Sancho, Weghorst, Anthony, Bruno are going to have to make up for his absence and chip in.

I think the FA Cup game might be a big ask to bring him back for but hopefully 2 weeks will be enough for him to heal.

He is not a champion and we should cash in on him this summer.
With the requisition of a top striker and an understudy, alongside the likelihood that Garnacho will become our starter on the left next season I don't see much of a future for him with us.

Toiled up top on limited service had one real sniff with a shot outside the box which went over.

Not convinced he’s a centre forward but much improved on last season, to me it’s essential we tie him down. A new striker in the summer and Garnacho asking questions should keep him on his toes And hopefully bring the best from him.

Don't know why but I thought he had signed a new contract. In my opinion you have seen the best of him this season and he will go downhill again. He isn't good enough to be OUR striker and with the emergence of Garnacho he soon wont be finding minutes on the left easy to come by. If he wants and expects to be a nailed on starter I think he will be disappointed.
Too often we fans are overly charitable to our academy players. Rashford isn't good enough and too many have been fooled by his Player of the Year season. He doesn't have what it takes.

Sadly had one of them days where fans will say he wouldn't score even if we played till midnight, So close to being a very special player, but ....

Truth is, given the performance I think we would probably have faired better with Big Weggy today

I mean how bad was he compared to arguably the greatest goal scorer on the planet at the other end?

Both pretty much marked out the game by good defending.

Not had a sherbet for some weeks actually, so no. Do you not realise how poor Rashford's performance was today?
It didn’t help our midfield were missing obvious balls to get him through. It wasn’t his best performance but you’re smoking something if you think Weghorst would have been any better.

Think in 3 of the last 5 seasons he’s notched 20+ goals. Carried the burden of a piss poor attacking line up for years.

I don’t think he’s the main man in a title winning side but he’s easily good enough to be the Mane to a Salah or a Mahrez to an Aguero or a Vini to a Benzema and he represents the city as a home grown player. That last bit has to mean something. Yeah we’ve been generous to our academy players Henderson, Williams, Tuanzebe, McTominay all getting way to many chances at least Rashford shows flashes of being world class.

Get some better players around him hopefully he can still get his 20+ and what the lad shine.

He was poor today, but he was badly let down by how we set-up, and that falls on the Manager, he needs pace outside him on at least one of the wings and he had Bruno(love him to bits)who would struggle to outpace Fred the Red after he'd had a night on the sauce with his boots on the wrong feet, and Sancho who just doesn't want to run. It was just too easy for their central defenders to subtlety block him/knock him off his stride(it's a skill but also cheating) away from the gaze of the Referee because as a unit they could under-defend because they didn't have to worry about getting beaten out wide. It would have taken a brave Manager to line-up Elanga-Rashford-Pellistri but what do they say "He who dares wins"

The manager got most things right to do. He was let down by the players including Rashford. Elanga would have made little difference.

We're a side that struggled to score goals, and you want to sell the one guy who actually scored his share? This isn't a Ronaldo style, get goals at the expense of the side either.

Rashford seems to be a streaky type of a player. When he's on, he's unplayable, and when he's slumping, he can't beat a man for love nor money. Unfortunately, he's in the latter phase at the wrong time in the season.

Having said that, he's carried us this season, despite being played in different positions to try and get the side firing. He's not a proper CF or a goal hanger, and does his best work getting in behind on the left. I think that he would benefit massively from a new striker being brought in this summer as it would free him up to work from the left and defenders couldn't just focus on him.

It will free up a place on the bench for him. That’s what I have been saying. That’s his future if he stays at United.

Hobbling around at the end clearly played on with an injury because that is what the lad does.

Sort the rest of these under performing attackers out so when Rashford is injured or not having a decent game you have someone to come on.

We don’t strengthen by selling our best player.

The problem is, he occupies the same position as Garnacho. I guess it's good to have top quality competition.

Sancho won't get a look in. Think he'll be sold if we can

both need to fight for that spot and the winner gets it The other gets the job of being the impact player off the bench.

No guarantee Garnacho becomes a superstar still a very long way to go for that kid but it looks promising. He currently struggles when he starts games and only really has an impact off the bench.

No one at City is a nailed on starter they have 2 quality players in every spot on good money and they fight it out to start.

Sancho to me needs to be moved on it quite clearly isn’t working and both parties need a fresh start but where does he go as his wages make him almost impossible to shift. Also, the lack of stick he gets in the press makes me think there’s something we as fans don’t know behind the scenes.

He wouldn't have done any worse
I don't do drugs, thank you.

Looks like you are trying to find excuse for him now.
Just because he got player of the season hardly makes him our best player. Everything about this season has been about Rashford, he has been given a lot of attention, mentoring and coaching and in fairness he responded well and has shown us his best form. But I think you have seen it now. I don't expect him to maintain it and in truth there is nothing special about him.
The problem will be....

Rashford simply doesn't have the mentality for that. There is something lacking mentally. You will have sulky Rashford back.
I am confident this will be proven next season when EtH brings in more new signings with the balls and mentality (that has been a trait in each of his signings) to help make us a force again, and Rashford's status will somewhat diminish.
It's sad, but I believe that's what is coming. I see Rashford abroad as none of next seasons likely top 4 would be in for him even if we were willing to sell, and anything else domestically would be a step down.
If Rashford is the best we got, then it can be said our present status is just, or even somewhat elevated.

He scored 30 goals without penalties that is a hell of an achievement. How many other players in top European leagues can match that? As I said in earlier posts we have seen consistent 20+ goal seasons from him now and maybe 30 is his limit but if he can give us 30 and others can start chipping in with 10, 15 or 20 suddenly that 100 goal mark for a season doesnt look so far away.

There are so many problems to fix before Rashford being a bit streaky and sometimes being a bit sulky.

Hardly making excuses it’s all about raising the bar get rid of the lads who can’t even compete with Rashford. Martial, Sancho, Elanga, Pellistri, Weghorst (already gone) and build quality competition to make sure everyone has to be at their best and cant slack off.

I have been talking specifically about Rashford here, there is little point in bringing others into the equation and making comparisons as to who should be the first to go. As previously stated Rashford will probably find his status and importance within the squad being diminished next season. He wont deal with it well and put simply, he doesn't have the X factor.
As you're going on about it, I don't think many would argue that Martial, Elanga and Weghorst should be gone unless SuperRash has been on the Bob Hope again. But I think Pellistri has still to be given real opportunity and still has potential, and while I am totally frustrated with Sancho I think another season is probably just. Especially as he can play both wings equally good/bad, it may be he would be cover for GArnacho and Antony.
