Marcus Rashford | Match Discussion thread 2022/23

So he ends tied with Denis Viollett on scoring in nine consecutive home matches at Old Trafford after the VAR nonsense, but still plenty of time for him to go for and beat the record again this season, and I think he will.

What a fantastic header. That his third headed goal of the season? He’s clearly been working on heading In training.

That was a proper centre forward's header too. He seems to have added tap-ins and headers to his game this season, two types of goals he rarely scored previously. With no international tournament this summer, you'd have to say he's the very very early favourite for the Ballon d'Or.

The coaches clearly deserve a lot of credit here and its great to see he has added such headed goals to his game.
If he can get better timing and decision making into his game when he has the ball at his feet, when to release the ball, when to find the pass, seek the return pass etc etc instead of all this running himself into trouble which is all too frequent then he becomes one of the best on the world stage. Hopefully the coaches can get this into his game by the time he is 27.

Definitely the most in-form player around at the moment - another brilliant performance tonight and that finish was a dynamite.

Currently unplayable. Imagine being a defender and getting the nod from your manager telling you that you're marking Rashford.

Just wasn't involved in the first 30 minutes so much so was expecting the commentator to say there had been a late line-up change before kick-off, but once he got into the game they just couldn't live with him. Wouldn't swap him for anybody else right now.

Admittedly he done what he had to do and in good fashion. However had De Gea let that in you would have been slating him big style.

Yep it would be disappointing to be beaten at your near post but sometimes that is the best place to put it. The keeper may have been expecting it to be fizzed across the box so had to cover that option as well. Like I said, a dynamite finish.

Think he hit it so hard the keeper didn’t have time to react.

Rashford when he’s in this form hits the ball so cleanly, heard numerous keepers say they hate training with him because when you save his shots your hands are throbbing.

Just a joy to watch at the moment and he seems to be loving it the challenge for him now is sustaining this level as in this form he is terrifying.

Fantastic strike. 30th goal of the season for club and country.
Good on him for turning around what was a truly awful 2021/22, because nobody but him, saw this coming.

How sustainable do we think this is? Is this a one off, a la Kevin Phillips who bagged 30 one season and then never came close, or has the penny dropped and this is the sort of production we can more or less expect for the next 4-5 seasons?

I think under ETH he will continue to get better and better. Obviously anything can happen in the future but I think this could be the season where he really starts to elevate himself into that top top class bracket.

Was a great goal last night and the sign of a great player is to dust yourself down after missing a few chances and get your goal. Overall I thought he wasn’t great but he seems to always pop up with a goal.

Hell of a strike few players in the world that hit the ball as well as him when he's on the top of his game. The movement and power he can get on those shots is incredible and must be a nightmare for keepers to handle.

He's going to need a proper rest during the summer and really maintain this standard over the next few seasons.

Ten Hag and his coaching team have done a great job with him and the club now need to get that contract signed with him.

He’s also been healthy this season, which can’t be coincidental. Not sure that’s down to ETH or whatever work Rashford put in over the summer, but it’s been key.

Think he just had a proper rest over the summer they had 2 full months off so all the niggles were allowed to heal up properly and this season he hasn't had to try and play injured which was a major problem over the last 2 years.

I think the coaching is helping him as well his movement and positioning looks better and he's even credited working with Benny McCarthy on his 1 touch finishing in the box.

He looks stronger this season. I haven't bothered to compare pics, but he's more willing to bully defenders and has added a power element to his game that wasn't there before. Part of that is probably mental as he's talked about being in a better space, but I'm sure he's bulked up as well. Maybe that's helping him be more resilient and avoid injury?

It can't be a coincidence that both Rashford and Varane have both avoided their traditional lengthy spells in the physio room, which could speak to the backroom staff/physical preparation work being done.

He's pulled out of the internationals with injury.

Hopefully it's nothing and we are just gaming the system a bit and getting him a rest.

I think he's been playing with a knock for a few weeks.

Was it the Barcelona game where he limped off towards the end?

I suspect it's precaution and Southgate will know he needs to work with Utd over playing time as our fixture schedule is insane.

Utd still potentially have 19 games to play this season, Spurs will only have 10 and Utd have not had a midweek off since August.

I was thinking after the game yesterday, hope a couple of our players pull out of International duty.

Glad Rashford is going to get a little rest.

Think the only other player who probably needs the break but won't get it is Bruno but he's a mad man he barely ever misses games for club or country.

DDG, AWB, Fred and Sancho all get a rest as they've not been selected and Varane retired from international football after the world cup.

Yeah was hoping Bruno came down with a ‘knock’!

Not sure how true the stat is but someone checked and Bruno has only missed 2 games in his entire career both due to illness.

I would be amazed if any player has played close to the number of minutes he has in the last 5 years.

I think I heard somewhere that he has played the most minutes of any player in Europe. Testament to how he looks after his mental and physical health.

Looked off his game yesterday, and I wonder if he had not fully recovered from his injury.

Thought Trippier just had the beating of him on the day.

Utd never really got him on the ball in any sort of space and when they did Newcastle made sure they didn't leave Trippier one vs one with him they always got players around him.

The shoulders slumped a bit as well.

He can't be the hero every game at some point other players have got to start chipping in and showing up. I think Rashford should have been subbed ahead of Anthony yesterday who was at least giving Burn a few problems.

That doesn’t look good.

Any sort of groin issue is going to be a minimum of 2-3 weeks.

Very very worrying. If he’s out for a couple of weeks then Martial needs to stay fit and step up.
