Wout Weghorst | Match Discussion thread 2022/23

Was his best game by a long way last night but he offers zero goal threat he's just a bit of a nuisance which helps create things for others.

Thats about it. It would be a tad unfair not to recognise that his nuisance element and his application has been very useful more often than it hasn't, and I certainly have had a growing respect and fondness for him. But that needs to be measured.
Such has been our pain over a 10 year period we have been overly appreciative and charitable in our views and opinions of any old bob that puts a shift in!
Wout's a good lad and I like that he somehow manages to play with a smile on his face and keep a positivity whilst not really fulfilling the requirements of his role. But the bottom line is, he is not a United player, not an squad asset that takes us back to the top of the game, and that is what we need.
Let me remind you all what takes a team to the very top of the game, where we are looking to get back to. Cole, Yorkie, Ole, Teddy, Rooney, Tevez, Ronaldo (as we knew him).
We need more than Wouty!

All of those great players you mention had water carriers alongside them to do the dirty work. Nobody is suggesting that Weghorst should be playing 50 matches next season or negates the need for a striker, but his “nuisance element” has proven to pretty valuable, and is certainly worth the pittance it would cost to keep him on.

That actually sounds to me like exploration your suggesting. "here is a miserly offer, and just be greatful you play for United?".
he is either worth the going rate or he isnt, and if he isnt that tells the story. Sounds like you think we can put him on the same deal as Mainoo and put him up in Travelodge.

Does 2 + 2 = 5 in your world too? He’s not gonna cost a fortune because he’s not a world class #9 or 10. What he does really well, is rather useful, so he’d make a good squad player on a decent fee/wage packet.

And for the record, he is rather happy to be playing for United, something that can’t be said for the other #9 who never actually plays for United.

This is nothing more than a silly notion you are having.
Of course he is rather happy playing for United. He couldn’t get a game for Burnley!

Good teams aren't worried by Wout Weghorst it's that simple.

The guy doesn't win headers, he isn't particularly good back to goal, he doesn't run in behind and his touch is pretty loose. He's basically another Fellaini but probably slower.

Injuries probably mean he's going to play most of the games to the end of the season but he shouldn't be kept on and I do wonder if the consequence of yesterday is we see Sancho return to the side and Weghorst drop to the bench.

He was an emeregency loan signing, offers very little other than being a nuisance in midfield. We will not be retaining his services.

Glad he scored, he could have easily scored a few more goals. Hopefully a confidence boost and he’ll grab another 5-10 goals in the remainder of the season.

I think another 5 goals is a big ask but glad he got his Old Trafford moment.

Another 2 would be a big ask. But if we create him 5 chances a game he might miskick a couple more in.

Chuffed for Wout to get his goal at OT. He seems to play as we would in the shirt. Gives 100%, knows the limits of his ability and is enjoying every single second of it for however long it lasts. He knows he is not the answer to our shortage of striking options but will enjoy the ride regardless. He seems a decent and honest bloke, and his team mates all seem to appreciate him.

This May all be very true, but come the end of the season he will still be a contender for the big red and yellow clown shoe.

I get he does a job, and he might hold the ball up for others. But he doesn't score, he can't run, his touch is poor.

As soon as Martial is fit he's out. So he will be replaced with a player most fans think isn't good enough for united.

saying that, I thought he did alright against West Ham in the cup

If Martial plays for United again it will be to try and get him to earn us a decent fee (which we wont be getting)

Should not be starting games for Utd it’s that simple.

Miles off the standard and jogging around at a snails pace may look like effort but it isn’t causing anyone any problems.
