Premier League 2022/23: Leeds vs Man Utd ~ Sun 12th Feb 2pm KO

I don't get the "pressing machine" he makes the effort but he's so slow by the time he gets there the ball is long gone.

It's like the steam roller scene from Austin Powers.

He has little or no service, yet Rashford scores when he goes in there. Also, how does service relate to a shots on target of 33%

Well obviously we play differently when Rashford plays up top. And how successful has he been starting up front?

The better the service he gets the more he'd have on target surely, it's not as though he's missing sitters is it?

I think 'pressing' and it's purpose may have gone over your head. It's not all about getting to the man with the ball more limit what he does/can do when he has it.

Yeah exactly like that

why do we play differently?

Leave everything the same and replace Martial for Weghorst, Martials stats pee all over Weghorst.

He's been a poor signing, but we were desparate, so it's a numbers game.

How does that work? so he's a pressing machine by not getting near the player with the ball and giving that player all the time he needs to make the right pass?

Pressing only works when you do it as a collective one man pressing will make no difference and if you attempt to press but do it at a snails pace teams will pass round you. Basically I see him expending a lot of effort currently for little reward.

Hopefully with the proper centre backs in and Casemiro the defence will be squeezed up higher so when we does press our attacking players are a bit higher up waiting to pounce on the mistakes.

Pressing works when you create panic I've yet to watch a game with Weghorst in the team and thought their defence is playing panic passes because he's all over them.

There's also the other side of the game for a striker which is bagging some goals currently he's having 1 attempt at goal per game, he's not going to create much for himself given his skill set he needs decent crosses which have been lacking in recent games.

I see him more as an impact sub once the wide players are fit again I think we'll see Rashford move into the middle and Weghorst drop to the bench.

What you mean apart from the fact we haven't got two Marcus Rashford's.

Yeah but he has to be on the pitch to do that.

Strongly disagree, he's done exactly what the Manager, and team need him to do.

He doesn't have to clatter into defenders every time just try and force them to do something different, or quicker than they want to - but then you know that.

Thanks for explaining how pressing works, or doesn't work - every day is a learning day!

His role in the team is not to be a prolific goalscorer, there's others like Rashford, Bruno, Antony et al who benefit from the work he does, or that is the plan anyway.

So you want to take Rashford from a position he causes havoc when he's on form(so most games at the moment), to a position he may never get the hang of just to get Weghorst out of the team, mmmm, interesting.

Well your claimed I didn't know what it is and you claim Weghorst is a pressing machine because he had some great stats a few years ago in Germany as part of a pressing side. I highlighted that this Utd side isn't really known for it's pressing it's still a counter attacking side in a lot of matches.

Rashford's last 3 goals have come from the centre forward position Palace, Leeds and Leeds. There are signs this season that he's adding the missing pieces to his game that could see him be a good centre forward. If you start him in the middle and it's not working no harm in bringing Weghorst on and moving Rashford out to the left.

Ideally I'd leave him on the left but I'm not convinced we're getting much from Weghorst and once Anthony is fit again and with Sancho hopefully getting back near his best we could play. Sancho, Rashford, Anthony as a front 3 and have Weghorst, Garnacho, Martial etc of the bench.

It is a small sample size but we haven't played well when Weghorst has started games, hopefully with a bit more time things will click but at the moment it doesn't seem to be gelling to well.

Nope, no such tab exists

Hazard a guess you'll have to get your reaction score up significantly if you want to be able to create a new thread.

Can't just have anybody doing it.

Might be 100% wrong on that mind, just a suggestion.

Nah soz there was no need for my post earlier, i'm just really struggling to see why a day after a convincing win away to one of our biggest rivals everybody and his brother is character assassinating one of our players that was a key part of that win, it genuinely boggles the mind.

There's a thread for stuff like that in fall guy central aka the player performance threads if that is your bag.

To me it's a wider issue the team has been struggling through the recent matches, performance levels have dropped. We've made hard work of the last 3 games against teams in the bottom half and yesterday lets be honest it was Leeds wasteful finishing that allowed us to get the points in the final part of the game. We could easily have been a few goals behind again in this one.

You might see it different to me I'll hold my hands up I haven't seen the full 90 minutes of every recent game and some games I'm only half paying attention to but from what I see Weghorst is doing fine but I don't see him as a nailed on starter.

Rashford has scored his last 3 goals after moving to a more central role so maybe there is something there. Moving him central hasn't caused his goals to dry up.

It wasn't a really call for Weghorst to be dropped because he's awful it was more a case of is this the best way forward for everyone maybe we should try something different.

Positive is Fred has hopefully got the bad Fred game out of his system and it's only 1 more game before Casemiro is back.

That's not what happened, I just said Weghorst is slow.

Depends how you watch football I suppose, I always felt we were in control yesterday especially in the 2nd-half, and I can't recall the last match where I felt if we don't seriously buck our ideas up we are gonna get beat here.

Even teams at the bottom create numerous chances every game against United because that's how we tend to play open, same as it ever was, and if you watch matches from when we were winning League after League after League you will see that nothing has changed. Apart from fans expectations.

Rashford excelling as CF is the next part of his development, he's certainly got the tools to play there.

You need to get yourself a memory

I thought the first 15 minutes in both halfs we were poor and Leeds were on top. Maybe not dominating the ball but certainly the side that created the chances. Some of those chances came from our own sloppy play.

Leeds started better than us in 3 out of 4 halves this last week which is worrying, but we are slow starters generally, not a major issue but something EtH and his coaches will hopefully be working on.

Think we actually improved quite a bit on this but we've relapsed a bit recently. Leeds certainly got off to fliers I guess the positive is we saw out the pressure but it never really felt to me like we put them under pressure until the last 15-20 minutes in both games.

We struggled getting the ball forward, when we went direct we lost it every time and we weren't able to play into midfield and work our way up the pitch.

Leeds are a bit like that they make any game chaotic

Leeds caused us more problems at Old Trafford when they twice caught us on the hop, but at Elland Road we just let them blow themselves out and then hit them with a quick one-two when they had. Totally professional away performance.

Had to laugh at the Leeds United fans giving Harrison a standing-ovation when he was subbed off yesterday, don't they know he came through Manchester United's academy.

The tannoy announced Harrison. The Leeds fans thought it said garrison and got ready for some action.

That might have been part of the plan for lots of sterile possession around the back but Utd really rode their luck with the chances they allowed Leeds to have and could easily have ended up 2-0 down again.

We all know Leeds tank at the end of games it's why they're facing relegation but the next level for this side is to really impose itself on the opponent for 90 minutes. We never really sustained any pressure first half our only chance was Bruno one vs one after a massive mistake by their defender.

Luckily second half after the subs the fresh legs and quality we could bring on made us better, whereas I'd say the players Leeds put on made them weaker and that is where the game was won.

Anybody know the significance of 33 minutes for Leeds fans because in both matches they started signing Y.R.A, Yorkshire's Republican Army at that time, which is something they rarely sing nowadays.

Think it's just a matter of getting through games at the minute, maybe we'd start more on the front-foot if we were only playing one game a week, and why risk getting caught on the break forcing the issue early knowing you're likely going to have to use more energy than you wanted to late in the game if you're behind.
