Premier League 2021/22: Chelsea Vs Man Utd ~ Sun 28th 4.30pm KO

Horrible watch absolutely battered by our opponent but happy with the point but it shows how far away we are if we are playing this way against a top side.

Difficult circumstances lots of players missing let’s hope it is something we can build on and start climbing the table again

Much better than The dross served up against Liverpool, City and Watford. Shame we couldn't hold out for the win.

Still, not a "United" performance; we should never expect to be under the cosh like that.

VAR is only there to impose the rules refs only ordered retakes if pens were missed.

That's not true though is it, a penalty should be retaken(scored or missed)if any player(either team) encroaches in the penalty area, or a keeper doesn't have one foot on/behind the line when the ball is struck.

And FIFA/UEFA have the power to help with that if they declare, as in a penalty shootout that if a goal is scored, or the keeper saves it/or the taker doesn't score that the ball is dead. And none of this rebound nonsense. You either score or you miss, end of.

Meanwhile back in the 'Chelsea are lucky we didn't have Maguire and Varane marshalling our defence' thread.

Battered!? De Gea didn't break sweat. We could have played Paddy Roche,

Had it on pause for a few hour while i've been educating, but my God, what a pair of fannies Carragher and Keane are, and to think some hang on their every word, deeply disturbing.

In the context of the past few weeks coming away from Chelsea being disappointed with a draw isnt a bad thing the team collectively actually put a shift in ( Isnt that what they should do every week ? )

Change is a coming and its for the better

Roy Keane with his inner-Johnny Giles, great lads away from the football but bitter insufferable tools when talking about Manchester United.

I don't agree with Keane, I don't agree with the Ronaldo signing. I hate the way he is so selfish and that no doubt rubs off on the team, to not go and and thank the opposing players or even worse the travelling fans is unnacceptable.

But to get back to their point, yes Ronaldo scores goals, but he also restricts the way we play. We went there to contain for 60 mins. We had one shot in that time, so what would have been the point of Ronaldo? After 60 I guess the idea was to create a bit more, so then bring him on.

But whatever the manager chooses, he should he accept it like a man.

These rules are only applied if the penalty is saved or missed if you score they aren't making you take it again because someone came in the box or the keeper stepped off his line. When it comes to encroaching you need to have got an advantage by doing it for VAR to intervene so if you get the rebound and came in the box it's eithe a retake (if the defensive team clears) or a free kick of the attacking team gets the rebound.

Same with the offside it needs to be deemed interfearing it's why last week vs Watford the retake was only ordered when they realised Utd had come into the box early and got the rebound.

Want to make penalties simpler just remove the rebound if the keeper saves it ball is dead and game restarts with a goal kick or you miss it's a goal kick simple.

They had 66% of the ball 24 shots, 6 on target, 15 corners, god knows how many touches in our box we defended well to stop them getting really good chances but we were on the ropes pretty much for the whole game. Utd had 3 shots 2 on target and 2 corners the ball barely went in their half and they gifted us our 2 chances on target Sancho goal and Fred's weak chip the only other shot was some shanked effort from Bruno from about 25 yards out.

A Utd side should not be getting dominated like that vs our opponent but we're in a rut at the moment so as a one off I've got no real problem with it needs must and all but we can't play like that moving forward.

As for the Keane and Carra stuff it's all for the cameras and both are kind of right in some of the bits they said but Carragher I think was right on what the main topic was Utd didn't sign Ronaldo to finish 4th and win cups. The truth I think is they signed him to stop him going to Man City no other reason other than that.

No matter how much they had the ball, and whatever our opinion on what united should be like. Carrick picked the right tactics there yesterday and it worked. 5-0 Liverpool, City all over us, Watford ffs. So he did well to get out of there with a draw. I've been impressed with Carrick, not saying give him the job, but I think he deserves to be kept on. As he has shown potential. Especially making the call to drop Ronaldo today, Bruno in the week. You may not agree with the them, but he shows he has the character.

They didn't rip us open like Liverpool and City

I've got no issue with what Carrick did on the day as I said in another post loads of injuries a change of manager two tough away trips I can see why he went this way my point was this isn't sustainable and won't wash for very long.

It's not been some sort of tactical master class it's bodies behind the ball and frustrate the opponent and punish mistakes it's a very basic way of playing football but done well it works especially if the opponent does make mistakes which lucky for us yesterday they did. It isn't going to be the longer term strategy Utd have got to be a lot braver on the ball and show a lot better quality to retain it if we want to win the fixtures we have coming up.

That said if Rudiger shows some composure right at the end and takes that chance all the talk would be very different as for me Chelsea did enough to win that game and the talk would have been about Ronaldo not tracking his runner.

Carrick has done himself proud in this little cameo be interesting to see what he does in the future is he looking to be a coach or is he looking to go into management.

A celan sheet and a penalty. After seeping how many golas? Shore up the back, then move forward.

Carrick denied Ralf had imput, but lots of chat today about the earpiece Fletcher was wearing.

Oh for sure Ronaldo has an impact on the way the team plays. But Keane is right that Ronaldo hasn't been signed to win the league with united. United right now are a cup team and will be for the next couple of years. United need to be prepared and ready to take over when City and Liverpool drop their level.

Fletcher was wearing the same earpiece on Wednesday my guess is one of the coaches was up in the stands communicating with Fletcher on the bench it's a pretty common thing in football. At pitch level you can't always see things as clearly as you can in the stands.

I don't know anymore, in non United matches recently across various Leagues where I don't care the outcome i've seen scored penalties retaken because the attacking team has players encroaching before the ball was struck, and saved penalties not retaken when it was obvious that the keeper didn't have at least one foot on the line.

I've always thought that once a penalty is saved, or scored the ball should be dead like in a penalty shoot-out, with a check that the keeper wasn't on his line if he saves it and then it's retaken.

That or in penalty shoot-outs if the keeper saves it, or the ball hits the post and comes back into play the keeper and penalty taker are not allowed to touch the ball again, and the remaining outfield players can sprint from the halfway line to continue a second phase where everything goes including sneaky trips, forceful shoulder barges, slam dunks, hair/beard pulling and pulling opponents shorts down is allowed, but obvious the team with the sneakiest quickest players would have an unfair advantage, but isn't that the case in normal game time anyway.

I know the stats but the match played out pretty much how I expected it to, and for all their domination there we very few 'oh shite they are gonna score here' moments for me anyway, and De Gea didn't have to pull off Worldie after Worldie to keep us in the game even after they got the penalty.

And even if we'd gone into the game cooking on gas with the players high on confidence I wouldn't have expected us to create more than 4 or 5 chances knowing how Chelsea play.

So all in all a great point, and on to the next match.

Think it depends on the league having VAR.

I know with VAR even missed penalty is checked not sure if they check when you miss the target but when it’s saved they always check the keepers feet then they check for encroachment.

If you score though the ref should never make you take it again unless you stop your run up or if a player on your team has encroached so far that they can distract the keeper.

That's open to interpretation because how far is too far?

Well far enough that the ref or VAR thinks the player can be a distraction to the keeper so I'd say 2-3 yards inside the box and it's very unlikely that this ever happens.

There will still be debates about whether a penalty should be given, what should be allowed when the player approaches the ball, and what should be allowed after the kick has been taken in 50 years time and VAR will be coining it in.

Maybe time for some Corinthian spirit where the penalty taker purposely misses because he didn't feel the defender who took him or his teammate out with a neck high challenge was only fractional out and in no way meant to injure the player, or the defender that got two hands to the ball had always wanted to be a keeper and was just playing out his fantasy and was generally a jolly good sport.

Football will always be about opinion it’s not tennis where a ball is either in or out the rules will always need some interpretation by humans who will make mistakes or see things differently.

If the ref gives it you try to score it any other approach in professional football would be ridiculous.

Did Robbie Fowler miss on purpose when he dived? I think that’s nonsense if you are missing on purpose you put it wide or over he took a poor pen and the keeper saved it.
