Most of you are probably aware Owen Hargreaves has been ruled out of Manchester United’s North American pre-season tour and is to miss the start of the 2010/11 season. This will come as a bitter blow to Hargreaves and Sir Alex Ferguson. Many had been looking forward to return of the England International and felt he would add strength to centre midfield.
Are we really surprised by this news? Not really. We were told Hargreaves will be okay for last year’s pre-season tour to Asia, did he feature? Nope. He’ll be fit for start of season, did he feature? Nope. January? Nope. North America pre-season tour? Nope. An unfortunate circle.
What does the future hold of Hargreaves?
The outlook looks grim for the Man United man. Another setback and 30 next year makes retirement a real possibility. Even the most optimistic would suggest this is a blip and we may see Hargreaves return later this year. Unlikely I know. Even if Hargreaves returns how long will it be until he breaks down again? Can he be relied upon to play on a regular basis? Perhaps a future in a less competitive league is a possibility.
Personally, I’m gutted for Hargreaves, he must be devastated. Hours of lonely trudging rehabilitation have come to nothing.
New signings to replace Hargreaves? Schweinsteiger and Veloso are decent shouts.
Are we likely to sign Schweinsteiger? Nah… Can we afford him after his World Cup performances? Another obstacle is Bayern Munich. Munich are a tough selling club, unless a player is no longer wanted, the German club fight hard to keep hold of their stars. Who was the last player we signed from Bayern? It was the transfer of Hargreaves.
What do you think? Is a replacement signing required? What are your thoughts on Hargreaves?
