Player Ratings: Scunthorpe United vs. Manchester United

1

Starting XI:

Kuszczak – 7: Plenty of work to enjoy – dealt with numerous shots from Scunthorpe – including a couple of good saves. Future Manchester United No.1? I have doubts – he is a good shot stopper, but questions surround his ability to claim crosses and poor distribution.

Brown – 6: Did okay – much better in the final 10-15 minutes. Not back to his best yet – another who requires further game time.

Smalling – 8: Excellent performance – an assist, his first goal and comfortable in defence – made several blocks. Impressed since his arrival – he looks a bargain at £10m.

Rio Ferdinand – 6.5: Still finding his way – desperate for game time. Was relieved and pleased he was able to continue after landing awkwardly on his back.

Rafael – 6.5: First start of the season, disappointingly at left back. Not sure what else to discuss about his performance – got stuck in?

Anderson – 7: Quiet-ish first half, but improved as the game wore on, especially his passing – he has the ability to provide the creative spark when Scholes is rested. Delighted he completed 90 minutes, which is a rare occurrence – a positive.

Gibson – 7: If not for the goal he would have received a score of 6. Brilliant goal, but his passing disappointed – sloppy at times.

Park – 7.5: Poor to begin, but improved vastly during the latter stages of first half and maintained this form until he was replaced in the second half. A goal plus heavily involved for Smalling & Owen’s second goal.

Hernandez – 5.5: Why on the right wing? Man United’s new signing is not a right winger – couple of decent crosses but little else of real note. His ability is being wasted in this role. Hope the intention is not to convert him into a right winger. Perhaps roughed up?

Owen – 7.5: Another that had a quiet first half, but excellent during the second – dropped deeper therefore more involved. Two typical Owen goals – who doubted he would miss the one v one opportunity to grab his first goal? Not me. He will score goals – how many opportunities will he receive though..?

Macheda – 6.5: Started wide on the left – extremely quiet. Switched into a central role – more involved and looked hungry for a goal – missed one or two chances. Good assist for Owen’s first goal. Will enjoy better nights.

Subs:

Obertan – 5: Tried in attack and prepared to track back in defence. Surprised he did not start ahead of Hernandez – he would have benefited from a full 90 minutes, considering the injury to Valencia.

Bebe – 5: Limited time to make a real impression. He looks strong, confident, plenty of pace and direct running.
