Player Ratings: Chelsea vs. Manchester United (Champions League)

By Mark Young.

Chelsea 0 – 1 Manchester United

Wayne Rooney gives Man United the advantage going into the second leg of the Champions League quarter finals. He scored to put United one nil ahead on aggregate against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge. Great individual performances from Ryan Giggs, Wayne Rooney and Michael Carrick helped the Red Devil’s on their way.

1.Petr Cech

Chelsea’s number one did not have a lot to do for most of the game. He was cool and composed when he got down well to foil Nani when he burst through late on. There was nothing he could have done to stop United’s opener. 6 (out of 10)

17. Jose Bosingwa

The Portuguese right back gave Giggs far too much room in the build up to Rooney’s goal. Poor defender and he should have been tighter. He beat Evra for pace on a couple of occasions in the first half but the final ball was poor. Replaced by Mikel. 5

2. Branislav Ivanovic

The big Serb played at centre back, covering for the cup tied David Luiz. He marshalled Javier Hernandez very well, who didn’t get a single shot away. He burst forward at the end of the game, running through red shirts galore. The shot was tame but solid performance. 6

26. John Terry

It was a Solid performance from the England captain on a night where there wasn’t too much to do. He seemed to have kept Hernandez quiet along with Ivanovic’s help but alert throughout. 6

3. Ashley Cole

Tough game for Ashley Cole as he had to defend against, Valencia, Nani and Rafael throughout the game. Decent display with no mistakes but because of the United threat he was very quiet in an attacking sense. 6

7. Ramires

Ramires was denied a penalty in the dying minutes after being fouled by Evra. He was unlucky for the decision not to be awarded as he burst through and would have been on goal. He doesn’t suit playing on the right of midfield but showed plenty of pace. Booked. 6

8. Frank Lampard

The biggest impact that Lampard had on the game was when he had a shot cleared off the line by Patrice Evra just before the break. He will wonder how it didn’t cross the line. A typical Lampard performance but he lacked the killer pass through on goal. 6

5. Michael Essien

A powerful display from Essien but he was a bit erratic in the middle of the park. Accumulated quite a few fouls and should have been booked early on but eventually picked up a booking. He had a 20 yard shot drift just wide late on. 6

18. Yuri Zhirkov

Zhrikov was preferred to Florent Malouda but it didn’t pay off. Had little impact in this game compared to his cameo appearance in the league. Replaced by Malouda in the second half. 5

9. Fernando Torres

Torres’ flick on hit the post in the lead up to Lampard’s shot being cleared off the line. The Spaniard also had a top quality header saved by Edwin Van der Sar and was booked for diving in the last minute. It was an unlucky booking but Torres can still do better. 6

11. Didier Drogba

The Ivorian provided the cross which eventually ended up with Lampard’s shot being cleared off the line. He had the beating of Evra every time he drifting on to the wing. He also had an over head kick go just wide. 6

39. Nicolas Anelka

Came on for Didier Drogba but didn’t really have any effect. He had a header go over that had deflected off Evra’s head but that was it from the Frenchman. 5

15. Florent Malouda

He came on for Zhirkov with 20 minutes to go but he was another one who failed to make an impact. 5

12. John Obi Mikel

Came on late on, with not enough time to make an impact. Negative substitution whilst chasing the game. N/A

Manchester United

1, Edwin van der Sar

How in the world is Sir Alex Ferguson going to replace the Dutchman? A fantastic save after a Torres header helped United keep a slender one goal lead. He was confident throughout but that fantastic save summed him up as one of the very best. 8

21. Rafael da Silva

An energetic display from the youngster was halted prematurely after he was stretchers off just after half time. Nani was his replacement as Valencia went to right back. 6

5. Rio Ferdinand

A vital early block by Ferdinand set the stall for his comeback performance. After being injured for two months he came back and put in a commanding display alongside Vidic. Dealt with the Chelsea attack well. 7

15. Nemanja Vidic

After being sent off in the league game a few weeks back, United’s captain put in a strong display. He won every header and seemed to fit back into the Vidic-Ferdinand partnership very well. Another performance like that next Tuesday and United will be in the semi finals. 8

3. Patrice Evra

The Frenchman was outpaced by Bosingwa a few times at the start of the game as he looked off the pace. He redeemed himself by clearing off the line just before half time. He was lucky not to have a penalty given against United for the foul on Ramires. 6

25. Antonio Valencia

The Ecuadorian added pace and balance to the United attack. He had a tough time against Ashley Cole. After Rafael went off injured he slotted in at right back and did a solid job. 7

16. MIchael Carrick

This was one of Carrick’s best performances in a Manchester United shirt. He was spraying the ball about with relative ease and a superb cross field pass to Giggs in the build up to the goal. More performances like this are needed, where United lack in the centre of midfield, but it is a start. It is time for the former West Ham man to build on this for the remaining games. 8

11. Ryan Giggs

The veteran winger was deployed in the centre of midfield on a massive night for United and he did not disappoint. His fantastic first touch from Carrick’s long ball and his cut back to Rooney for the goal shows that the old master has still got it. MAN OF THE MATCH 9

13. Ji-Sung Park

Park was again preferred on a massive European night where others thought Nani may have played. The Korean personifies industry and another hard working performance showed that Sir Alex was again correct to keep faith in him. 7

10. Wayne Rooney

Forget the swearing in front of camera’s for one moment, because Rooney is back, and back with a vengeance. Although Rooney was booed all night but he got his own back with the only goal of the night. He played just behind Hernandez and his link up play was brilliant. 8

14. Javier Hernandez

When Chicharito was signed in the summer he was seen as a squad player but it showed tonight how much faith the manager has in him by starting him in such a high profile match. He worked hard and didn’t stop running but got little joy at the Chelsea centre backs. He was subbed late on for Berbatov. 6

17. Nani

Starting from the bench, Nani was very good on the break when he came on. Broke through only to be foiled by Cech. 6

9. Dimitar Berbatov

Showed some good touches when he came on for Hernandez, but little attacking impact. 5

12. Chris Smalling

Came on for Park in the final minute of stoppage time. N/A

Unlucky booking for Torres? Are you joking? He was lucky it was only his first yellow of the day for diving. 50m well spent!

  2. He was unlucky in that instance to be booked for diving, bit harsh in my opinion, but he is never worth the 50 mil, I agree with that
