Manchester United vs. West Bromwich Albion
Venue: Old Trafford
Date: Saturday, 1 April 2017
Kick-off: 15:00 BST
Manchester United slipped up in yet another home game with a lacklustre 0-0 draw at home to West Bromwich Albion.
With a stuttering home form where goals have been hard to come by against a well-organised side managed by Tony Pulis, this result probably isn’t the most shocking of the weekend.
Unlike previous matches, United failed to create that many chances, but in a winnable game ahead of a busy schedule when the top four looked on again, this will feel like two points dropped for sure.
Positive play from Anthony Martial led to the ball ricocheting into the path of Jesse Lingard, who took a touch to set, before firing over the bar.
Martial himself saw a shot deflect behind for a corner as Lingard flashed wide.
Marcus Rashford curled wide before Martial headed off target from Lingard’s cross from close range.
After the break, Marouane Fellaini’s attempt fell wide as Martial was again off target.
Former United keeper Ben Foster thwarted Henrikh Mkhitaryan before the former denied Rashford’s strike from range.
Baggies skipper and ex-United favourite Darren Fletcher saw an effort turned onto the bar by David De Gea as Foster kept out a Rashford free-kick.
After four additional minutes, full-time brought to an end another frustrating result at Old Trafford, which has seen eight draws from the last 12, a high since the 1980/81 season.
With boss Jose Mourinho all but admitting that the Europa League is the priority, the sketchy league form particularly at home could prove the manager’s thinking to be correct.
Injuries and suspensions ruled five probable starters out of this fixture, but the squad depth should’ve meant those not involved weren’t missed as much as they ultimately were.
This April sees nine fixtures scheduled, the second of which sees Everton the visitors, where Toffees manager Ronald Koeman will be looking for his third straight win at Old Trafford in an 8pm kick-off this Tuesday.
