UEFA Europa League Group A
Fenerbahce vs. Manchester United
Venue: Sukru Saracoglu Stadium
Date: Thursday, 3 November 2016
Kick-off: 18:00 BST
Manchester United left themselves in a precarious position in Group A of the Europa League, losing 2-1 at Fenerbahce.
A second minute acrobatic strike from Moussa Sow opened the scoring, with Jeremain Lens’ free-kick doubling their lead on the hour mark.
United did hit back late on through Rooney’s fine effort, but it was little too late as the visitors drop to third in the group.
Just 70 seconds into the match, Sow’s immaculate overhead kick gave the hosts the lead, as United were left shell-shocked.
Midfielders Morgan Schneiderlin and Ander Herrera both saw yellow, as fellow midfielder Paul Pogba was forced off through injury.
A neat through ball by Anthony Martial fed Rooney, but the skipper’s touch let him down.
Marcus Rashford’s cross from the right was intercepted before it could reach Pogba’s replacement Zlatan Ibrahimovic.
Just before half-time, Fenerbahce captain and goalkeeper Volkan Demirel was booked for getting involved in an incident that saw Souza go down despite not being touched by Rooney.
After the break, Juan Mata dragged a shot wide from Rashford’s lay-off, before the second goal arrived.
Ibrahimovic brought down Mehmet Topal in a dangerous position, and former Sunderland man Lens stepped up to curl the free-kick past the routed David De Gea.
Substitute and last season’s West Ham loanee Emmanuel Emenike saw two shots saved, as Martial fired wide with a frustrated attempt from distance.
Someone who did find the net from distance, Rooney went level with Ruud van Nistelrooy in terms of goals for United in European competition, picking the ball up in space and drilling a finish into the top corner.
He almost equaliser when his header was cleared off the line by Ismail Koybasi, but United’s rally came too late in the game to retrieve a helpless situation.
Up next is a tricky trip to South Wales to take on Swansea City, searching for their first win under new manager Bob Bradley.
This is also a fixture that United have lost on their last two visits, with the Swans also winning four of the last six in all competitions.
Jose Mourinho will have to big his men up ahead of this test, in the hope the international break can be entered with a victory, but he will be without the suspended Herrera.
With Antonio Valencia, Chris Smalling, Eric Bailly, Michael Carrick and now Pogba either indefinitely or likely to be ruled out through injury, the squad looks much thinner, as the Portuguese boss mulls over his selection.
A fair result in the end tonight, United can only hope to bounce back in their next outing this Sunday at 3pm.
