Match Report: Anderlecht 1-1 Manchester United

UEFA Europa League Quarter-final First Leg
Anderlecht vs. Manchester United
Venue: Constant Vanden Stock Stadium
Date: Thursday, 13 April 2017
Kick-off: 20:05 BST

Manchester United drew 1-1 away at Anderlecht in the Europa League quarter-final first leg despite taking the lead through Henrikh Mkhitaryan.

Despite having control of the game, Leander Dendoncker’s late header salvaged a draw for the Belgians ahead of next Thursday’s return leg.

This was the 10th 1-1 draw of United’s season, a stat highlighting the inability to see out matches and take the chances that are being created.

Marcus Rashford’s dangerous cross was met Zlatan Ibrahimovic whose toed effort was saved by Ruben Martinez as Jesse Lingard’s rebound struck the post.

Rashford himself fired just wide as Serigne Mbodji made a fine tackle to thwart Lingard’s run.

A neat, following move for the opening goal ended with Rashford’s shot being saved, but Mkhitaryan was on hand to find the net on the rebound from a tight angle to give United a deserved lead.

After the break, Mattel Darmian’s left-wing cross was acrobatically placed just wide by Mkhitaryan as Rashford’s curling effort was held.

Substitute Sofiane Hanni’s strike deflected wide as Marouane Fellaini, also off the bench, saw his attempt deflect but saved by Martinez.

Hanni again was off target before Paul Pogba should have scored when sent through by Ibrahimovic but his effort was turned behind, as Fellaini’s header from the resulting corner was held.

Then came a superb equaliser when Dendoncker powered home a header in front of Darmian much to the joy of the home support.

Pogba blazed over in response before full-time brought to an end a decent cup tie.

In complete control, Jose Mourinho will be furious at his side for conceding a soft goal late on, but an away goal to take back to Old Trafford next week leaves United as favourites.

Up next is the visit of Chelsea at 4pm this Easter Sunday, looking for a first win over the Premier League leaders since October 2012 and first at home since September 2011.
