Loan Watch 2015-16: Sam Johnstone Joins Preston North End

Manchester United goalkeeper Sam Johnstone has joined Preston North End on a short-term loan deal, totalling a month at present, with the potential of extending such temporary spell.

An impressive pre-season tour of the U.S. in the summer saw Johnstone’s stock rise, where the 22-year-old featured in three of United’s four games – playing the full game in wins over Mexican side Club America and locals San Jose Earthquakes before replacing David De Gea in the victory over Spanish Giants Barcelona.

However, it was De Gea’s collapsed move to Real Madrid on deadline day and the free signing of Argentine no.1 Sergio Romero that forced Johnstone to the fringes, but he is back at his hometown club, where he spent the second half of last season on loan, making 22 appearances, including a Wembley clean sheet in Preston’s 4-0 rout over Swindon Town in the League One play-off final last May.

That victory secured a Championship return for the Lancashire side, where Johnstone can showcase his undoubted talent in England’s second tier.

Having represented England at every age group up until the U20s so far in his career, the shot-stopper has the chance to progress towards his potential with regular football at a competitive level.

He is not without experience mind, with over 70 games under his belt in various loan spells at the likes of Scunthorpe United, Walsall, Yeovil Town and Doncaster Rovers on two different occasions, plus the aforementioned stint at Deepdale last term.

We wish Sam all the best during his spell away from Old Trafford.
