Legends: Duncan Edwards

By Worried Turkey.

Duncan Edwards played for Manchester United between the years of 1952-58. During that time he made 177 appearances for United, scoring 21 goals and winning 2 Championship winners medals. He also won 18 caps for England.

Edwards had unrivalled stamina and could have run for hours. He had a powerful shot (think Bobby Charlton or Wayne Rooney) with either foot, was dominant in the air (think big Bill Foulkes or Nemanja Vidic), strong in the tackle (think the tenacity of Nobby Stiles and tackling of Roy Keane) and a superb passer of the ball (think Pat Crerand with the astute defence splitting passing but not wasting a pass à la Paul Scholes), then you had Edwards and some more….

At the age of 21, Edwards was a giant of a man, he had an aura that no other footballer had or has had in my time. Seasoned professionals, internationals all with good pedigree looked towards Edward’s for inspiration. No matter what I write, no words will do this man justice… Edwards would have led England and Man United for years and undoubtedly lifted the World Cup I believe in 1962 and 1966. When discussing Duncan Edwards “proud” is a word I associate with him. Proud to have witnessed him, proud to have been hit by him and immensely proud to have spoken to the great man (was only for an autograph, but just to be stood by his side with mouth wide open dribbling better then George Best ever did).

I have one story about “Dunc”. During a match early in his career he picked the ball up on the edge of his own penalty area and decided to go on a run. He beat a couple of players but then suddenly quickly passed the ball up field and was seen to dig his toes into the half way, whirling his hands round to stop suddenly…. It was later found out that Sir Matt Busby had instructed Edwards to play as a defensive midfielder and didn’t want to see him cross the half way line! Being a kid and having the utmost respect for Sir Matt, he didn’t….. Priceless!!!

Duncan Edwards will forever be in my memory.
