Uruguayan starlet Guillermo Varela is the first signing of the David Moyes era at Old Trafford.
The twenty-year-old defender has signed from Uruguayan side Club Atlético Peñarol for an undisclosed fee.
Despite being the first signing since Moyes was announced as Sir Alex Ferguson’s successor, the work for this deal has been done for some time. Varela had a trial at the club near the end of the season. He has impressed the coaching staff enough for the signing to take place, despite not playing a senior game at Peñarol.
The player has represented his country at Under-17 & Under-20 level – he is involved in the FIFA Under-20 Championships in Turkey this month. He is a right back and will have to compete for a place in the team with the Da Silva twins.
The first signing of the Moyes era is certainly the continuation of the Manchester United tradition of buying young players to develop them. Guillermo Varela, welcome to United.
