Van Nistelrooy - 150

Rooney has a great chance to beat Charlton's record.

Just another 98 to go to get to 250! The way he's started this season, he could cut out a fair chunk of that this season. Will have to see his career out with us to pass Sir Bobby in my opinion.

To overtake Ruud and Scholesy is some achievement.

There's always a chance he could over take Sir Bobby or at least get close.

Rooney has the ablilty to do it...though i suspect it'll be three seasons before he gets close enough to start talking about him overtaking Sir Bobby

At his current rate of scoring in the league this season, he will score 76 goals in the league. haha. If he can keep scoring I think 30 is definitely on the cards.

I mean obviously the key is that Rooney stays injury free.

That's a no brainer!

Sir Alex: Rooney can eclipse Charlton - Official Manchester United Website

Sir Alex believes Wayne Rooney will eventually break Sir Bobby Charlton's all-time United goalscoring record of 249.

After his hat-trick against Arsenal in August, Rooney admitted he'd set himself a challenge to reach Charlton’s incredible mark.

The number 10 is currently on 156 goals for the Reds, having scored , and Sir Alex sees no reason why he can’t surpass Sir Bobby.

The United boss told Inside United: "He's only 25 years of age so you'd think he has at least another five years in him at the very top level.

"And, if he looks after himself like Ryan Giggs, he could play well into his 30s. So the opportunity's there for him and time is on his side.

"He's raced out of the blocks already this season and I hope he could get up around the 30 mark."

Thought he was average tonight, i'd like to put it down to him saving himself for Sunday but I think he and others were just complacent.

Can this thread be kept for just keeping track on Rooney's record instead of his form?

Rooney now equal with Giggs.

Charlton - 249
Law - 237
Rowley - 211
Best - 179
Viollet - 179
Spence - 168
Hughes - 163
Giggs - 161
Rooney - 160
Scholes - 150
Van Nistelrooy - 150

Update 12/12/11 - Giggs total corrected.

Charlton - 249
Law - 237
Rowley - 211
Best - 179
Viollet - 179
Spence - 168
Hughes - 163
Giggs - 162
Rooney - 161
Scholes - 150
Van Nistelrooy - 150

Giggs is not letting Rooney pass him just yet.

Rooney is on 162 isn't he?

Also Rooney's goal tonight made him the first United player since the war to score 15 or more goals in eight consecutive seasons.

After City

Charlton - 249
Law - 237
Rowley - 211
Best - 179
Viollet - 179
Spence - 168
Rooney - 164
Hughes - 163
Giggs - 162
Scholes - 150
Van Nistelrooy - 150

Already scored more goals now than last season by the way, half way to his 09/10 record. If he plays in the Europa League and we go all the way in the FA Cup, he could beat it despite playing in a deeper role.

After Bolton

Giggs - 162
Scholes - 151
Van Nistelrooy - 150

Giggs - 162
Scholes - 151
Van Nistelrooy - 150

I would expect him to be close to Viollet and Best by the end of the season. Seems inevitable he'll break Sir Bobbys record if he stays at the club.

I was discussing this with a friend not so long ago and I actually think rooney can do it, he may not be scoring as much in a season as he was say 5 years back, but he is still scoring, which is a boost and if he carrys on scoring, then why can't he do it
