Can’t see him going all out for the league cup to be honest those extra Europa league games and the fact we’re playing a bit of catch up in the league means I think he will play a B team.

He had to play pretty much his best XI through the group stage in Europa and it looks like the team has run out of steam, I think he has to give them a break and be fresh for Fulham on Sunday.

Dubravka

AWB Lindelof Maguire Malacia

Fred McTominay

Elanga Bruno Rashford

Martial

I‘d be looking to give Martial 45/60 minutes before the weekend, Bruno missed the game Sunday so I’d be starting him and surely at some point Dubravka has to play. Hopefully have some of the kids on the bench.

I think what the start to the season has shown is we don’t yet have the squad to challenge on multiple fronts and sadly top 4 is more important than a league cup at the point.

Villa I think will make some changes too so Emery can get a look at the players who didn’t feature this weekend.

pointless comp, if we hadn't have lost on Sunday I'd say play kids.

But we don't have the squad for this comp so we need to be out ASAP

Would you do the same in the FA Cup?

The last 16 games are 2/3 days after the world cup final before the return of the league. That's madness.

Yep but could be a handy match for some teams who's players will be desperate for match sharpness.

Almost use it like a pre season friendly.

Would you do the same in the FA Cup?
I would

I don't really hold much with domestic cups any more.

In the 70's 80's and maybe 90's I did.

For me the FA cup is for small teams and teams chasing the treble etc. I do like watching the small clubs vs the top clubs in the rounds. The Euoprean cups hold more value. They should never have moved the FA cup final from 3pm or taken it off free to view.

Same they're nice to win but quickly forgotten for Utd fans.

In a normal season I prefer the league cup to the FA Cup as it's all done and dusted early. It's a good way normally of keeping your squad players ticking over with regular matches as well. Going out early last season gave Ole a massive headache because he didn't have the games to give to the squad players that he'd kept.

The FA cup sadly gets watered down as teams still going for the league or European trophies tend to rest players even in quarter and semi finals. Same goes for sides who are scrapping relegation/chasing promotion the cup is almost always second to the league.

Financially to the Prem and maybe even championship sides cup runs aren't really crucial anymore so managers get away with playing squad players.

If there has to be a domestic cup competition then there should just be the one. It is pointless having two competitions, as the years have gone by then clubs use them to rotate players and give squad players a run out.

The FA Cup was a big thing when I was younger but now it’s very meh.

Disagree on them being pointless. The league cup has been a great bedding in ground for youngsters.

The FA Cup is going nowhere and will always exist. Maybe we'd feel differently if we won either more often. I'm sure City Chelsea Arsenal and Leicester are all for em in recent years.

I think the league cup needs to go and I would change the FA Cup so that all teams enter in the first round.

Arsenal Chelsea and Tottenham out. May as well try win it.

United’s attack can’t be worse than the last match, surely?

Garnacho - young lad
Van de Beek - waste of space
Ronaldo - waste of space
Rashford - waste of time on the right

Hope to see a couple of the young lads get some game time in this one. I don’t care for the League Cup really so would definitely be playing Iqbal, Pellistri, Garnacho and McNeill but probably won’t happen!

Guessing it’s Bruno off the right with Donny behind Martial?

My theory with Donny is he’s playing him to attract offers in January.

Few nice bits of play but final pass has been poor.

Bruno on the right wing is almost as painful as Rashford on the wing.

Get Donny off, Bruno in the middle and one of the kids on the right wing.

Sounds like a poor first half. Yeah, take Donny off.

Just a nothing half

McTominay, Fred and Donny are providing no craft in midfield and Bruno is wasted wide.

It is basically Malacia on the overlap down the left and that’s it.

I’d stick Pellistri on see what he can do on the right.

A half where no-one really wants to be there.

I would put Pellistri on as well just to give up some width. Donny should be off and Fernandes back into the middle.

0-1 Watkins

Done on the counter.

1-1 Martial

1-2

Dalot OG

Martial, VDB, Fred off Garnacho, Elanga, Eriksen on

What a pass from Garnacho! This is one of the best cameos we have seen for quite some time.

Blimey, a right game of two halves. We seem to leak goals when Varane and Martinez aren't playing.

Yeah crazy game the subs changed it for Utd.

Villa we’re clinical with the chances that came their way but their defence is a shambles.

Drawn against Burnley in the next round.

A great opportunity for a trophy here, one of Man City and Liverpool will go out in the next round. All the other bigger teams out.

Tricky tie as Burnley will be back in league action before we are and with the game only a few days after the world cup final who knows who we will have available at that point. Any player who gets to the semi final stage for us will surely be sitting that one out.

As for last night my player ratings

Dubravka - 6. Solid Debut didn't have much to do and couldn't do anything on the goals really
Dalot - 5. Thought he was off his game.
Maguire - 5. Not a performance that is going to win him his place back in the side.
Lindelof - 5. A performance we've seen plenty of times before and a reason why he's probably 4th choice.
Malacia - 7. Best game in a while looked full of energy and the overlapping runs he made going forward were key.
Fred - 5. A poor night and to blame for the first Villa goal. His passing was to slow meant our attackers who made great runs were being caught offside. Wants to many touches on the ball.
McTominay- 5. His late goal bumps him up from a 4. I thought he was very poor last night.
VDB - 4. Just looks like a lost boy on that pitch.
Bruno - 7. Wasted out wide first half came alive when moved into the centre.
Rashford - 8. Looking back to his best and long may it continue.
Martial - 6. Quiet game service was poor but when the chance came he took it. Hopefully he's fit enough to start at the weekend as well.

Elanga - 7. Brought some energy even if the quality is lacking.
Eriksen - 7. Got the ball moving much quicker which allowed us to open up a pretty poor Villa side.
Garnacho - 8. Great cameo from the youngster picked up two assists and lifted the crowd. He gets bums off seats and doesn't seem to have any fear.

Casemiro/Martinez. Not really on long enough to give a rating to.
