Bit annoying that we play them twice in a week after they've sacked Gerrard. Emery is a smart manager and I expect him to very quickly get them in a solid hard to beat shape.

They were well beaten by Newcastle last weekend so Utd have to go their thinking about taking another 3 points on the road.

Team News Varane is out with injury and Bruno is suspended. There are still doubts over Sancho, Martial and Anthony who all missed the europa league game and when Lindelof came off he went straight down the tunnel which is often a sign of an injury.

DDG

Dalot Lindelof Martinez Shaw

Casemiro Fred

Anthony Eriksen Rashford

Ronaldo

Quite a few youngsters in the squad, which is good to see: Garnacho, Shoretire, Elanga and Pellistri.

Martial on the bench.

de Gea
Dalot
Lindelöf
Martínez
Shaw
Casemiro
Eriksen
Rashford
van de Beek
Garnacho
Cristiano Ronaldo

Great start 2-0 down within 15 minutes

Started passing much better in the last 15 minutes of the half. Need a fast start to the second half to get a quick equaliser.

Well, that was }%+# . Came back into it in the last part of the half, but we need a fast start after the break if we’re going to get back into this. The longer it goes the more Villa will sit back and just clear poor cross after poor cross.
Which brings me to my other point: Why are we crossing for Ronaldo all the bloody time? First, he’s offside most of the time anyway. Second, we can’t cross to save our lives. Third, Ronaldo is crap. Striker in Jan is paramount.

ETH errored here, should have pushed Eriksen into Bruno, and Fred or McTom in.

And Ronaldo is terrible, I don't understand why he starts

Agree, DvB offered nothing and Eriksen would have been better played higher up the pitch.

Only 2 positives from the game, Casemiro and Martinez.

Villa (League Cup) and Fulham before the World Cup. Forest and Wolves to follow before the Jan window opens. Assuming he comes back from the WC late, there’s two more matches for Ronaldo to darken our doors before he’s off to spread his ego somewhere else.

Donny VdB and Elanga are just wasting space. Elanga has at least done something in our shirt at some point, which is more than I can say for DvB, who didn’t do anything for Everton either.

If we are to have any hopes of finishing 4th, we need striking options in Jan. But I don’t think any of us are holding our breaths of that happening.

Haven’t seen it but sounded awful.

Few questions over the selection 2 games in a week for VDB seems odd and pushing Rashford out wide right again to me make little sense.

Terrible result with a few of our top 4 rivals dropping points this weekend.

Shows there is still a long way to go with the squad.

Right flank is a bit of a problem if Antony not available. Sancho would be the obvious replacement but he is unavailable too. Rashford clearly cannot play there.

Centre forward is a bigger problem though. Unless he is scoring goals then Ronaldo really offers nothing. We do not actually have a natural centre forward and in truth our handling of that position has been pretty poor in recent years.

I really do not see VDB having a future at United. Somehow Twitter keeps managing to persuade me he should be given another chance but in reality he has never remotely looked like taking any of his chances.

Probably unpopular amongst United fans but I definitely prefer Maguire to Lindelof when Varane is injured.

I thought he might go with a flatter three in midfield today with Casemiro slightly deeper flanked by Erikson and Fred.

There is still much to do with this team, which I think will need at least two more windows to challenge even for top four.

Bruno makes a massive difference to this side and it shouldn't have been forgotten by many.

I was going to say best performance by a Man Utd player this weekend was Gary Neville. But I just watched it and he was just as shit as the rest of them.

I think some people forget his incredible work rate. We sorely miss him when he’s not in the side.

We certainly miss Bruno of this season. But I do think Eriksen should have played that role yesterday and not DVDB so ETH errored there. It's a worry we rely on Bruno so much. One player should not have that effect. I guess Anthony and Sancho out were also a factor?

I was also curious to see Lindelof ahead of Maguire when Maguire, I have been lead to believe, has played ok. Although I still hold that neither are good enough.

I mentioned a few weeks ago, and got called pessimistic, but we are not going to get far this season all the while we cannot score. Unfortunately it will have to be another temporary measure because it's mid season. Why they didn't address this in the summer now seems a huge mistake.

ETH was correct in post match review, why we are pumping cross after corss into Ronaldo gawd only knows. He should not be playing, our football drops in standard when he plays.

Still in the mix for top 4, but Liverpool winning was a pain, although it did take points off Spurs.

Just gutted, we should have won that game, too many errors by management and players.

Think Lindelof was picked because he's played well whenever he's stepped in but we all know his flaws and yesterday we saw some of them. That's not to say had Maguire played things would have been different as his form hasn't been fantastic.

Liverpool winning doesn't really bother me they're chasing us but dropping points on a weekend where both Spurs and Chelsea lose is a killer.

We're very goal shy we've got to start scoring more goals 18 goals in 13 games just isn't enough. The teams above us are all close to 30 goals or more.

We were bobbins. The squad needs so much more depth despite all the money spent this summer. It's definitely a work in progress
