Frenkie de Jong

I think six signings is definitely achievable if Eriksen arrives on a free. If he doesn’t then I think we’ll be bring in 5.

Don't forget to count Donnie Van De Beek.

That's like a new signing.

Always thought that was a Fergie-ism but just googling it and apparently it was Wenger that said it.

I'd quite happily forget about that guy same with Martial who is also back from a very underwhelming loan spell.

Not sure who used it first but I'm sure Fergie used it in his time when talking about guys who returned from long term injury, although Fergie's more memorable one on transfers was "there's no value in the market" around the time when the club really were under pressure from the Glazer loans back in 2009-10.

I think they need a CB before a RB arrives. Unless AWB is sold.

Just don't see him buying one unless there are plans to sell Maguire, Varane or Lindelof which there's no suggestion there is. Any CB that comes in would be to replace Bailly/Jones/Tuanzebe who could all leave this summer. Not sure he's got the funds to go for a guy who is better than those 3 even though I don't doubt that he might need one.

Just think at right back whatever way you look at it the two lads we've got are crap and we need better. Even on their best day they are only ok whereas those 3 centre backs at their best are very good just need to get their best out of them more regularly which is the job of the manager.

DVDB will be like a new signing. Playing for a manager who wants him and knows how to use him.

Lets hope that signing is more Carrick then Kleberson

I still have massive doubts over how good DVDB is, just haven't seen the evidence for myself to be honest and I really want to be proven wrong but whenever I've watched him in a Utd shirt I've thought a very average looking player. He had 1 good game at Everton vs Leeds but after that he got an injury and never really showed anything else. He's lost 2 years of his career at Utd hopefully he can get back on track but I'm not sure he's going to be do it here think the league might just be a bit to quick and frantic for him he needs to develop the dirty side of the game.

Reminds me a lot of Kagawa and Mkhitaryan I really wanted them to be good but they just weren't and after leaving Utd they never got it going again.

Think the midfield options currently are lacking an enforcer type who brings that power and physical domination to a midfield that is required.

The team is lacking height De Jong, Bruno, Fred, Eriksen, VDB not really known for their heading ability and set pieces were a huge problem for us last season. Like it or not you need to win your battles in the air and on the floor and apart from McTominay none of our other centre mids are guys you'd want marking on set pieces.

Still 2 months to go in the window lets hope we can get at least 3 in before the season starts the others might be last minute jobs as players will need to leave to make way for new players.

More reports he wants to say at Barca. Probably recycled from last week.

I'm worried about this signing. We shouldn't be chasing players who don't want to come. See Di Maria

Rumour is he's got bonuses and back pay owed from Barca he wants them to pay up everything they owe him before he moves.

There is no way Utd would even enter negotiations with Barca without being 100% certain the players wants to come to the club.

Unless he's set his heart on United and City know it can't believe they haven't been sniffing round him as he'd fit like a glove in their team.

Chelsea about to join the chase

There must be a problem of some sort, this has been going in for weeks.

The lack of deals is beginning to bother me. Think the rest of the players are back this week before they leave for a tour. Season starts in a month

We need to get these players in

AS saying Barca don't want to sell, they want him to take a pay cut. I think we need to move on from this and a player who wants to come. We need to close some midfield deals out.
Season starts in a month

Joan Laporta

"There are clubs that want him, not just United," he said. "We have no intention of selling him, he wants to stay.

"Frenkie is considered as one of the best midfielders in the world by all the experts. We are happy to have him."

We are happy to have him and is considered one of the best midfielders in the world - but yeah take a pay cut fam.

I still see this happening. Obviously if it doesn’t then we are up the creek but I refuse to believe we’ve put all our eggs in this one basket with no encouragement from the player or his agent.

You missed the next part where he said De Jong needs to accept a pay cut painting him out as the bad guy.

He is playing politics to save face with the fans because they’ve agreed a deal that on paper looks back for them.

I didn't, it was in my post above. And that part wasn't a quote it is rumour, the second post was the actual quote

Laporta can posture all he wants, I still expect de Jong to sign for United in the next few days.

There is so much rubbish written you just don't know what to believe. The rumour last week was it all had to be done by Thursday.

As far as the board go this wouldn't be the first time United spent all summer chasing a player of theirs and then ending up with Fellaini. It is a bit weird this negotiation is taking so long

I don't trust United one little bit in the transfer window. We desperately need players or ETH is going to get battered by the press when we continue the woeful form of last season.

Players are coming back now, we leave on tour soon. I don't think it's out of order to be worried about the lack of signings in key areas. Are we saying, even if we do get him, that is the only midfielder coming?

This is what Laporta went on to say after him saying they were doing everything they can to make him stay.

"There are many clubs that want him, not just Man Utd," He admitted "We have no intention of selling him, he wants to stay. I'm going to do everything to keep Frenkie, but there’s also a salary issue and that would have to be adjusted."

This week is key the team departs for the pre season tour on Friday you would expect if the work has been done this deal will be announced before the tour and De Jong and hopefully a few others will arrive to depart on the tour.

Barca players are due to return for pre season games tomorrow and will then head off to America for their tour.

Barca need this deal done quickly to allow them to get on with their own business.

They need to move on. Enough is enough they are wasting time on a player who doesn't want to leave.

That is exactly what we need to do. We wasted too much Time in this saga. Go for Laimer and forget De Jong.

That would be like queuing up at the Butchers' for some prime steak, getting bored and going to the newsagent next door and getting some pork scratchings instead.

Laimer doesn't have the skills of De Jong but he work really hard. We need a DM, fast and strong, like him.

What I don't really get is Uniteds approach so far this summer. All players with a serious link so far are good players but only one is likely to be a starter from the start of the year. And that signing right now seems to be in jeopardy.

Doesn't feel in jeopardy to me got a good feeling that this one gets over the line this week as I doubt Barca want this deal to drag on much longer as they need that money to allow them to register new players.

I do agree would be nice to see a few more starting pieces arriving but there's still 2 months to go in this window and a month before the first game. Guess he wants to have a good look at what he has before deciding where to spend the rest of the budget as apart from LF it feels like any position in that team needs some urgent attention especially with the uncertainty over Ronaldo.

Hopefully Utd can get most of their business done in the next three weeks before the season starts and I expect a late flurry at the end of the window.

I'm more concerned that we've spent all summer chasing a player who would rather stay at the club they are at. And, at the moment, he is the only midfield target we seem to be chasing.

I like de Jong, but he' not going to transform this team. As Idfd said, we need a worker in the there

I think the thing with De Jong is he's miles better in terms of quality than the players we could get instead.

He's a great player who also works hard which is essentially what we need.

McTominay works hard and so does Fred but we all know they've got limits in terms of ability it isn't a case of one or the other you have to have both.

One player won't transform this team it needs to be constructed over time and if you have the chance to get a guy as good as De Jong I think you take the time and hope that it comes off.

Problem is when you buy from Barca there's always a lot of talk and we've been burned before with Fabregas and Thiago so we do need to be careful but I think the club should be pretty confident it's in the bag. They won't have gone into negotiations with Barcelona without knowing 100% that De Jong is willing to come. That link between ETH and the player is what gives me the confidence.

Barca have been pretty straight with De Jong he can stay but he needs to take a 60% pay cut which at his age I'm not sure he'd be willing to take.

This week is crunch week for me the player is now back from holiday it's time to get this one done if it can't be sorted this week maybe it's time to walk away and move to plan B.

Laimer doesn't have the skills of De Jong but he work really hard. We need a DM, fast and strong, like him.

He's not without skill but he's more a selfless pressing-machine who does his best work when the opposition has the ball, whereas de Jong likes to pick the ball up from deep and dictate the play.

Why not buy 'em both, pair them with Bruno/Eriksen and there wouldn't be many better midfield threes in Europe next season, that trio might give the defenders and Manager sleepless nights, but that's their problem ;)
