Arsenal Discussion 2021/22

New deal for Arteta now signed up until the 24/25 season.

They'll probably get 4th spot which I think is partly down to a decent job of rebuilding that squad but largely down to Utd's total collapse this season.

If they can have another decent summer window they should be a top 4 contender again next season. They need a decent centre forward and really a lot more competition/depth as next season they'll have european football to cope with and we've seen this season when a couple of the first choices drop out the drop off is huge.

Lacazette has left and will go back to Lyon on a free transfer.

Two big money striker signings made by the club both left on a free transfer this season with Aubameyang going to Barca and Lacazette back to Lyon.

Arsenal surely need to be in the market for a striker and other attacking players this summer as they are well short up top.

Darwin Nunez would be ideal for them, and they're probably the only club in England that would be daft enough to pay circa £80m for him.

He's one of the guys they have been linked with but think he's probably got bigger plans than Arsenal.

They've still got Pepe knocking about, what a disaster signing that guy was.

Not seen him linked to Arsenal but a few players that the press have nailed on for United over the years have ended up there like Charlie Nicholas, Marc Overmars and Patrick Vieira, plus London is a big draw for most foreigners, don't know why though as it's a shithole.

Thought Pepe and Sarr(@Watford) were good signings at the time.

Think the lads that want the London life are more likely to go to Chelsea and I'm not sure the London thing really matters when you are shopping at the top end of the market now not like City are losing players to London, easier when you can chuck in free first class flights on Etihad to wherever you want to go.

I was always a bit sceptical on Pepe seemed a huge fee for a guy who had only had 1 season in France and I didn't know much about Sarr.

Arsenal are in serious danger of being left behind with Newcastle likely to start pushing the current top 6 they seem the most obvious one to drop out.

Arteta is doing a decent job building a young squad but they need to keep it going.

Funny how you think a club that finished above us are in more danger of being left behind

Sometimes the red devil tinted glasses are so clear. Arsenal are a team on the up. They are a young team with a pretty good young manager. I'm not saying they are going to go on to be world beaters but they are on the up. That puts them in a better position than United are right now.

Utd can and will spend it’s way out of trouble in ways Arsenal cannot.

Obviously should we continue to be an absolute mess for another decade we will be in the same position they are.

It is 20 years since they won the league, 15 years since a European cup final and haven’t qualified for the CL in 7 years.

7 straight seasons out of champions league and was given it on a plate last season and still couldn’t get it done.

I’d be amazed if they finished higher than 6th next season Utd will be better and so will Spurs.

They lost 13 games last season same as the season before and had no European football this time. Is that really on the up?

Not everything is about Utd but it will take very little to get us back above Arsenal next season.

They've got a huge summer ahead they need to bring in a lot of players to add depth to the squad and improve their starting XI. They need a top class centre forward and a centre mid then 2 or 3 reliable squad players. They can’t afford any slip ups a similar situation we are in.

French news saying Ronaldo may go there for CL football.

You should charge for this level of comedy.

I'll give you £5k if Ronaldo signs for Arsenal. That nonsense is hilarious. How do you believe that rubbish?

But in context they have a lot of young players who will have gained a lot of valuable experience from last season. I'm not saying they are going to compete for the title but they are on the up in my opinion. To suggest United will finish above them at this point is a bit of a stretch.

They had their best season in years and we had our worst they were 1 place above us and lost more games despite an easier schedule.

To me that looks like a blip not a pattern.

They are certainly heading in the right direction but with the European matches to cope with next season they will need a good summer window to add the necessary depth to their squad to maintain a top 4 race next season.

I expect Utd to push Chelsea and Spurs for the top 4 spots next season if we make some decent signings.

They are heading in the right direction and at this point you can't say the same for United. That can change of course but right now you can't say united are headed in the right direction.

I'd be shocked if Arsenal finished above United next season.

I think you're forgetting that United would never have ended the season the way we did if we didn't stupidly appoint Ralf.

We still had the same players though regardless of who was manager.

If the manager makes no difference why bother changing?
Sure you would agree though that sometimes a manager change doesn’t make any difference? And the default setting on an under performing team is to sack the manager even if the players have been stinking up the place. Obviously sometimes a manager change does work wonders but the whole environment of the club was pretty rubbish so I strongly doubt any manager wouldn’t have got a tune out of the players. Players were there that didn’t want to be there, many average players being first choice and a few injuries/off field issues.

I agree changing the manager doesn't always make a difference. But we employed someone whose not managed in years had no history with the English game and couldn't didn't grasp the league or players.

He was fundamentally a failure and I can't see that happening under ETH.

No point opening up that Ole debate if he stayed we may have fallen further behind and been out of the race earlier who knows. It’s quite clear that lot were not arsed about chasing 4th most of them were thinking about being elsewhere next season only a few tried to keep the fight going the rest weren’t arsed. That was a result of the actions of both managers Ole for not trimming the squad down last summer and Rangnick for sticking the boot into them in public.

You judge a trend over a few years not over one season.

5th, 8th, 8th, 5th, 6th, 5th

That is their last 6 league positions.

I think what they’ve done in the last 18 months is the right thing for the club getting out a load of senior players with bad attitudes on big wages and bringing in some young players but I don’t see them moving up from 5th.

There are rumours of clubs sniffing around some of their players too. Gabriel and Martinelli were linked to Juventus and Saka is apparently on City’s radar. Keeping this group together and adding to it is going to be tough.

I didn't mention Ole once or not sacking him. I mentioned the failures of the manager we appointed and I cannot seeing it happening under ETH.

Ralf should never have been considered. Do you really think we finish below Arsenal had we appointed ETH/Conte or even Poch in November?

You use part of that to judge a team. But if you look at the United trend it would paint a somewhat positive trend and yet this team is far from on the up. A few year trend gives some indication but you've got to consider other factors.

Probably not a permanent appointment would have been backed with signings in January and likely taken the same moves Rangnick did to cut the squad down to a more manageable size. Basically what Conte did at Spurs got rid of some unhappy players and freshened it up with 2 signings in key positions. Utd needed players in January but the club didn’t want to act and there were clearly quality players available to clubs willing to spend.

The interim plan didn’t work same way it didn’t work with Ole that season fizzled out too despite a top 4 spot being up for grabs.

I was pretty clear on here I thought the club should have took Conte even if it was only going to last a few seasons for me he’s top class and our squad was pretty much perfect for his system. It was for me a gamble worth taking In my opinion.

I think we would have finished above Arsenal if Carrick had been left in charge.

We'd have finished above Arsenal and Chelsea if Ole had been left in charge, but there you go.
