Scott McTominay | Match Discussion thread 2021/22

Never took his eyes off the ball so not sure it was a red card offence, 10 minutes in a sin bin maybe.

Was lucky not to get sent off today for that wreckless challenge. Passes sideways and backwards far too often, to demonstrate what a limited footballer he is.
Yep such a frustrating player. When he’s in possession you can see his first thought is to pass it back or sideways.

But you need that, you can't have everybody in midfield looking for the Hollywood pass all the time.

Irrelevant if he kept his eye on the ball. Was not in control of a foot high studs up challenge, could easily have got a red.

The ball was high, but yeah he could've got red, and if he had a reputation he may well have walked.

For me there's only one angle where it looks naughty but if you look hard enough then you can always find one, and VAR will have seen that but didn't think it was worthy of a red.

I do not think it was a sending off but that does not cover up a really poor performance. Every now and again he comes up with a powerful, high energy performance that sort of makes you think he has it in his locker, but the reality is he is nothing but a decent squad player.

One of those real off days. A few chances of counter attacks he's broken down misplacing a 10 yard pass.

Criticised the players, coaches and higher up yesterday.

I would quite like to know who he’s referring to as a higher up or did he just want to chuck everyone in to say everyone is responsible.

He needs to look in the mirror. He’s awful.

Can't pass and constantly out of place or outrunned. This guy is seriously limited. Should be on the bench next year.

Up against two very good players last night and he looked miles out of his depth Matic who's 10 years older and probably 5 years past his prime looked a much better player.

I like his attitude but it has to be backed up with ability and this lad is a very average player.

He should be playing a lot less next season.

That is what i like about Matic. He has composure and close control. Look good in tight space but sadly too old. McTominay looked like a child. He should not play next season. He is average. Garner has more potential than him.

Problem with Matic is his best years where behind him when he was signed a massive mistake was made in going for him over Fabinho if the rumours about Fabinho at the time were true. I do recall Monaco were reluctant to sell him that summer but I feel had Utd pushed they'd have got him the summer before he made the move to Liverpool. Mourinho probably wanted that experienced head alongside Pogba. Matic is just a tidy player nothing really phases him played last night like he didn't have a care in the world super calm in possession.

It may well be the case and if Garner comes back and sticks around he'll have to prove he deserves to take McTominay's spot.

Given all the work that needs to be done if we go into next season with two new centre mids plus fred/mctominay/garner I'm pretty happy between those 5 and it'll be up to them to earn the spots in the starting XI.

Hard to see McTominay lasting the effort you can't doubt but you do have to back it up with ability and I just don't think he's got that ability but he deserves a chance with the new boss.

I assume VDB will likely be competing with Bruno for the slightly more advanced role as that is where Ten Hag used him at Ajax.

DVB looked like he has better close control than Bruno. Also he was a pass and move player, something nobody do in the team except Sancho. He was also alot more carefull in possession than Bruno high risk pass style. We will see, but it will not suprise me if he bench Bruno next season.

Think it'll be a competition between the two whoever players well will have the spot in the team and that is the way it should be.

As it should be for all positions you have a job to do for the team in that position and if you do the job that's needed you'll play if you don't you wont.

Wasn't great the last match but he came back a lot earlier than expected from an injury he's obviously not recovered from fully to help the club when we were down to the bare-bones in midfield and some of the criticism he received for his performance is deeply disturbing.

Forget ability, if just half of the squad had his desire for the game and club as Scott we wouldn't be in the position we are now.

You can have all the desire in the world that will never replace football abilities. This guy is average at best. He doesn't press, he can't pass, he have bad position awarness and he is not particularly fast. He is just a tall kid with desire. That may be good enought for a relegation candidate but not for us.

You're missing my point, the guy was prepared to play injured to help his team, how many others in the current squad would do the same? You could probably count them on the fingers of one hand.

And i've yet to meet/talk to any United fan that thinks he(McTom) should be a nailed on starter going forward, but he'd be a more than useful squad player if only for a few years. Or till we get up to speed squad wise.

As for desire, it's just a shame the many in the squad that are far superior to the latest fall-guy ability wise don't want to know when the going invariable gets tough, meaning they are no use to the team when it does. Give me a team of McTominay's over those flakes any day of the week, it may not be pretty but i'm sure they wouldn't just role over when the latest match was going away from them.

McTominay will be a useful player if used correctly. The McFred partnership doesn't work because both are forced to play away from their skill sets. ETH could get a tune out of McTominay yet. I think it's important to have a big body in midfield, someone who does a lot of hard grafting and makes things easier on their teammates. I still see him developing into a Fletcher-type role. I agree that he just isn't technically skilled enough to be in a title-winning team.

And you might be right... I just don't think he has the ability. His passing isn't good, he's not very good at taking the ball off his defense and although he works hard I'm not sure what that effort does for his team.

I hate the he works hard defense of any player. That should literally be the bare minimum. You're basically saying he can run a lot. And when that's the defense of a footballer it means they aren't good enough.

And I personally don't even think McTominay does that well. Fred is easily the better of the two defensively and I've not checked the stats but I'd be shocked if McT covers more ground with his hard graft.

Have you ever played football? It doesn't sound like it. Every player doesn't need to have the same skillset. It's important for central midfielders to complement each other, and ours don't. If DeJong or someone like him comes in, Fred is gone. Fred is supposed to be playing in the more attacking/creative role. DeJong launches a lot of attacks so he's not a traditional holding player, but our system will need to change to suit DeJong. Neither Fred nor McT have the close control needed to work effectively within an Ajax-like system. Of the two, McT might provide some grit and steel in the side if used correctly, as in, if ETH sets him out with certain instructions and players around him that complement that style. Fletcher, as I mentioned, is the model here. Fletcher was never technically brilliant but his absence against Barcelona in the CL made our side fall apart. McT is not as good as Fletcher and maybe he never will reach that level. McT is 25. Fred is 29. McT should be hitting his peak right about now and maybe ETH can help him get there. Fred is past his best already.

I've played football at a decent level for the last 16 years. This is probably the final season I'll play. Not sure what the relevance us though.

Lets be honest chaps if all goes to plan neither Fred or McTominay will be regular starters under ETH in 2 years time but you need a squad especially with the CL expansion coming up adding further games to the schedule so they may well stick around as squad players for a while before eventually moving on.

Waiting for the meltdown when ten Hag on the advice of our own Wally with a Brolly names Scott McTominay as the new club Captain.
