Chelsea Discussion 2021/22

Having a bit of a wobble for the first time under Tuchel that defence is starting to look like you can get at it and the attack has looked a bit blunt the wing backs scoring all the goals maybe masked a lack of goals from the forward players.

Injuries in midfield maybe leaving it a little more exposured than normal.

Lukaku seems to be coming back very slowly from his latest injury only being used off the bench, annoying as I put him in my fantasy team weeks ago watching him trundle along 1 point per week.

Got a big problem with out of contract players as well Azpilecueta, Rudiger, Christensen and Thiago Silva all out of contract this summer.

It does seem like Rudiger is off probably going to Madrid on a free but the others will probably all sign new deals and stay.

Kind of modern football I guess.

They've had 3 draws at home in the last 4 and needed two penalties to beat Leeds at the weekend their title challenge is slipping away.

Covid hitting them as well now.

Where are all the Saul Niguez fans now btw? Atletico Madrid have performed a miracle getting his wages off the books this season.

I went to Chelsea for a few games one season when they were in the 2nd division. They were pretty well supported. Scummy fans though.

There always was and still is a very nasty element to part of their fan base.

Pointless comparing their "fans" post 2004 to the ones before as it's a different game for them now and the way the club behaves probably fuels the supporter anger as they are very quick to turn on their own players and managers because the owner has shown he's willing to be ruthless.

Feels like they’re out of that race now.

to win it now they’d need to be almost perfect in the remaining 18 games.

This thread makes good reading from my perspective. Even in October when they were top and I said they wouldn't be in the title race come the end of the season did I expect them to be out of it by the end of December.

Chelsea are now third favourites. 16/1.

I mean to be fair... Whilst you were right there are mitigating circumstances here.

yeah fair play you called it I thought they’d go the distance but injuries have hit them Lukaku missed a lot of games and City have just been relentless again.

just like last season theyve gone on a crazy winning run think it’s 10 in a row that’s just blown the opposition away.

You need to be a special team to keep up with that sort of pace.

Umm... their injuries and players missing due to covid...

Been a bit overblown the players they're missing. Tuchel said they had no midfielders whilst having Barkley Saul and Kante sitting on the bench.

The game they drew with Everton, Everton didn't have a fit forward and were playing a complete second team.

The game they played Vs West Ham was basically their strongest 11 and against us they didn't have many (if any, maybe Lukaku but he's not exactly been fantastic this season) missing. Injuries are a part of football and part of the reason I say City will walk the league is because of their strength in depth. It's something you take in to account when judging the season it's a squad sport not a starting 11 sport and even then Chelsea haven't really been decimated.

Yeah Liverpool were ruthless in punishing mistakes Chelsea weren’t.

Mane lucky to be on the pitch that elbow in the first minute was very close to a red card

2-2 now

Kovacic has scored one of the best goals you will ever see.

Yep two teams that chucked the kitchen sink at each other for 90 minutes

A good game, second half failed to deliver on the promise of the first.

Mendy made a couple of great saves, but the Liverpool keeper was pretty untroubled.

Great result fo to City.

Thiago Silva signed a new deal to 2023.

Probably the easiest of the contract rebels to sort out as he'll take 1 year deals at his age and seems pretty happy in London the others who are looking for longer deals like Rudiger, Christensen and Azpilucueta probably won't be so easy.

13 points off the title race now. Should teams below then win their games in hand then they're really back in the race for top 4. Us and West Ham would go 3 behind them. Tottenham can go above them and Arsenal would go 2 behind them. (Obvs Arsenal and Spurs have eachother tomorrow)

But they're in the race for top 4 and not a title race.

First half they had 0 shots. On or off target and 0 corners.

Overall 1 shot on target and 1 corner. Remember when people thought Tuchel had Peps number with his formation?

City are just relentless 12 straight wins unstoppable.

As for Chelsea they’ll be fine the teams behind won’t all win those games there’s a reason why we are all chasing and it isn’t because of games in hand.

Thought the tactics were poor today from Tuchel long ball to Lukaku has never worked vs City and it never will totally isolated.

Feels like there season this year is a mirror of ours last season got off to a great start then just sort of fizzling out, they're going to end up in a race for 3rd with no one just drifting to the end of the season. Liverpool and City will pull away from them I think and the teams chasing 4th I don't think are good enough to catch them.

Could be a huge boost for them in European matches if they are able to rotate in the league but they don't really seem to have anyone in good form that they can bank on at the moment.

Lots of uncertainty around the club to with a few players coming to the end of contracts and a few others maybe wondering if they've made the right moves.

You have to wonder how long players like Ziyech, Pulisic, Werner & Havertz will hang around if they have all struggled to nail down starting spots.

Even Lukaku the big money buy hasn't worked out and they'll need to decide what to do about that one this summer.

A chance for some silverware this season their second crack at winning the club world cup against Palmeries tomorrow. They didn't win the competition last time they were european champions so you'd think they'll be bang up for it this time.

Lukaku set a new record at the weekend.

Played 90 minutes only touched the ball 7 times and 1 of those was a kick off the least number of touches by a player who's played 90 minutes since the data started being recorded in 2003.

5 goals in 17 league games for a guy who cost £97.5m is not what Chelsea were hoping for.

The latest striker to suffer under the Chelsea curse.

How do you only touch the ball 6 times after the initial kick off touch? That is astounding!

Cannot say I’m surprised Lukaku isn’t doing so well, I feel like he had found a good home in Italy and was doing well by all accounts.

Think Conte worked out how to use him gave him another striker to play alongside and two really attacking wing backs who fed him with plenty of crosses. They don’t miss him at all Dzeko is doing a great job for them as a replacement slotted straight in and Serie A just isn’t what it used to be in terms of defensive football.

I thought he’d be good but it really hasn’t worked.

Shearer and Wright did a good piece on him on MOTD he’s stopped making runs to give players a pass to him but equally players aren’t looking for him at all.

League Cup final at the weekend, one of them games you hope both teams lose heavily and pick up a raft of suspensions.

I'll be waving celery around for this one my allegience is very much blue in this particular contest.

On the pitch. How did they lose that game yesterday wasted so many good chances to put Liverpool away.

Why did the sub on Kepa? is he some sort of penalty specialist? Seems odd given Mendy saved one in his last shooutout at the AFCoN. Liverpool players basically embarrased him Fabino gave him the Panenca and Van Dijk basically smashed on straight through him and his miss was horrendous.

Off the pitch the clubs facing serious problems the owner is attempting to pass "stewardship" to the clubs charity foundation who have not yet accepted this offer. The issue is stewardship doesn't mean anything from a legal point of view he'd still own the asset so if the government does impose sanctions on him due to his political links either current or historical then there's a chance the asset will be siezed.

Rumours today a swiss billionare is going to buy them.

Why can't he buy us :-(
