Marcus Rashford MBE

This idea he's got to get his mind back to football and can't focus on anything else. Do you guys struggle to focus on anything else but work and does your work life suffer because you have interest outside of work?

It's the biggest non argument I've ever heard. I don't know about you but I manage to work quite well and do other non work related task too. The idea this is damaging to his football is absolute rubbish.

The idea is when people along with the other arguments they make is that he should know his place because he's putting too many noses out of joint. Oh how the daily mail and others have been waiting to write such nonsense as seen above.

Lewis Hamilton gets the same treatment. His other activities will ruin his driving and he should know his place. What is it with people and telling sportsman what they can and can't manage to do whilst focusing on their career too?
This has got nothing to do with the press. He needs to keep his ego in check and also protect himself from being exploited. You can bet it was Macmillan (a great organisation by the way) that contacted him and put him up to this to exploit his name and recent campaigns.
He will be getting carried away, looking for the halo. His comments about lack of reading opportunity are total nonsense, so not point in twisting it by blaming the press.

I suspect a lot of his child hood was taken up with training. All elite sports people don’t seem to have much of a child hood as they were out practicing whatever sport it may be.
Well, that would be on total contrast to what @IDFD is saying. He didn't have time to read because he was training all the time?
I would confidently say when I was a kid i played more football than Marcus Rashford did. I never stopped, red ash pitch football to street football, we were at it all the time. I still read and most nights fell asleep with some form of reading material in my hand.
EDIT: and no wise cracks :)

Don't understand why people want to jump on his back for trying to do something to help out.

Even if he just raises awareness for young kids to use the public libraries that are still there (plenty have closed) and spend less time on phones or staring at screens that's got to be a good thing? For those that can't access a library he's trying to help them out. Maybe kids hearing that Rashford likes to read might make it seem like a cool thing to do and some might find a new hobby that they enjoy that doesn't require expensive IT equipment that parents can't afford to give them.

He's saying he never really got the chance to do it until he was 17 probably because his focus was elsewhere trying to go his best in school or become a professional footballer will take up a lot of his time but not every kid has that dream and those demands. There will be lots of kids sitting at home bored with nothing to do but not every kid is going to want to get into reading and that is fine as well.

He's doing this in his spare time he can only train for a few hours a day so while resting his body which he has to do he's helping support good causes absolutely nothing wrong with that.

I wasn't blaming the press for anything regarding Rashford doing this. I was blaming them and their silly articles about him causing people to say nonsense like he's getting too big for his boots and he should just concentrate on football.

At the end of the day it's a simple thing that he's a footballer and a hero too many. Him encouraging reading is only a positive and if just 100 kids pick up a book because of him that wouldn't have done otherwise then job well done. Kids are very impressionable when it comes to their heroes and him making reading 'cool' will men's there is a take up on it. There is absolutely nothing negative about this except for those that have a reason to find something negative in it for underlying reasons.

@jsp then sell it for what it is. Saying his family couldn't afford for him to read it twaddle. He is over egging the poverty card.

His suggestion was they wouldn't have had the money to buy new books for him if he wanted them and I can't say what the public library access situation was like for him growing up.

I don't have any underlying reasons for my comments other than what I know. Poverty has never been a reason for kids not reading and certainly isn't now. as @jsp said, maybe they should put their electronic devices down for a while.
Rashford himself is from Manchester, dont tell me didnt have adequate library services available to him for reading purposes.
There are so many people now read on electronic devices, kindle etc. A someone that is in the habit of browsing charity shops I can tell you that in this day in age they are overflowing with books of all types and selling them for pennies.

His library access would have been plentiful. Not being able to afford new books has nothing to do with it.

Okay then 'hes talking nonsense he could have read a book if he'd wanted'. There was no need for the nonsense lies that it's affecting his football or will do. As I said we manage to do our day jobs just fine and have other lives outside of work.

Or the idea he's getting to big for his boots because he's promoting reading.

I can't see any reason for those two accusations other than feeling a need to get after him because of how he's taken on the government (an ongoing theme from people regarding Rashford in recent times)

You aren't talking about what you know when you say about he should focus on football more as you've no clue to how many hours he dedicates a day to football or how much time he's spent regarding promoting kids reading.

There is no use you trying to twist and turn things. It is this simple, I object to him making out he was deprived of opportunity to read due to poverty.
That's bullshit!

You can go to any car boot and get a load of books for a quid.

I've not read his article but if he did say poor kids don't read because of wealth that is BS.

But kids from poor backgrounds probably do read less due to other reasons so if his initiative helps then that's great.

anything that helps anyone read is a good thing. Knowledge is king

And that is the problem here. He is busy playing the poverty card where it doesnt apply. Not in the slightest.

I can’t believe there is any sort of negativity here.

He didn’t just say I was poor, let’s give poor kids a book. There is so much more to it than that, it’s about equipping kids with books who may not have access to it or because of family circumstances can’t always get to a library. If you live in the outskirts of a town and it’s 3-4 miles to the local library and your parents are working all the hours in a day to make ends meat, then perhaps kids don’t get that access. And I think it mainly encouraging kids to read and get lost in a book.

It’s also about getting kids off their phones and reading books and with Rashford putting this forward, some (not all) kids might be like hey let’s read a book.

Much like your comment about him getting to big for his boots or he should focus on football was.

I’d rather focus on the positives he's trying to get kids into reading which to me seems like a damn good idea given how long kids spend looking at screens now.

He came up through poverty fairly recently so he probably understands what access is like in 2020 better than we do but he himself admits he never had much interest in reading until he turned 17 and was a professional footballer.

Libraries are council funded and will have suffered through a decade of austerity as services are cut to the bone.

Rashford has said none of this whatsoever. He has clearly blamed poverty for his and others failures to read. That is wrong. You cant make it right just because he is one of ours!

That doesnt change the fact he is mis selling it. Hopefully he can encourage kids into getting active as well.
As a Scot I have for decades been looking for someone to encourage Scottish kids to play football. All the red ash pitches I used to play on are now weed ridden and abandoned or put to other use and Scottish football has clearly suffered for decades. But I have never blamed poverty for it.

It doesnt apply now but none of us have the first idea how poor they were when he was growing up. It is his story to tell and you can make your mind up if you believe him or not but you cannot possibly know. Wythenshawe was a very poor area although I dont really know about now, i suspect it still is.

When I was a kid I was much too much of a farty to go into a library without my Dad. I just wouldnt have known what to do and not had the confidence to ask.

He isn’t mis selling it he’s offered it up as a reason he didn’t read more as a kid when you’re relying on handouts every penny counts and that seems to be what his family went through. He’s not said it’s the only reason poor kids don’t read for some access will be an issue for others it’ll be other reason like a lack of interest or a parent/sibling to read with them and help them develop the skill of using your imagination and reading skills.

Joe Wicks is getting the kids active, Jamie Oliver is sorting out the diets, Hector Bellerin is doing the environment keep up.

Access to pitches is becoming a big issue for kids and child obesity is a big problem but one thing I will say is the generations coming up behind me are much more health conscious. They smoke less, drink less, eat better and exercise more than my generation do so maybe that message has started to get through. For kids the councils need to sort out the facilities make sure they’re properly maintained (means proper funding) and parents take an active role in allowing kids safe outdoor play time with friends.

Why would he do this? He has made the grade. He has become very rich. The only reason to do it is he feels young kids, dont get a fair shake and he feels an obligation to say so.

This is my last word on this as you lot are frying my brain.
The only reason Marcus Rashford has offered for kids not reading enough is poverty! Having to prioritise food over books!
That is total bullshit.

He literally said it all in an article I just read. About getting kids off their phones, getting lost in a book and imagining themselves as the characters.

I love what Marcus is doing, and he did say he wants to get kids away from tablets etc which is a great initiative.

But he did say he didn't read as a child, not becasue of "poverty" but they didn't have money for books. This I'm with Shoot on, you can get books free in libraries, more or less free at car boots, and probably if you asked, people would give books to you. I would.

But I don't care he said this, it doesn't bother me in the slightest. He's joined an iniative set up by others and probably just spouted something out.

I think what Marcus is doing is amazing, when you look at most footballers posting photo's of their new watch/car/trainers etc it's abreath of fresh air to see a young footballer trying to improve the lives of children.

Do schools not do this any more? when I was a child at junior school we had a trip to join the library. We always read in School. Mind you when I left school I didn't read much until I started commuting to London. Then I read loads.

My Children also read in School in the UK before we left, although they were young.

don' t know. I know he signed up with JayZ management company and they were going to do something in the US

What's all this malarkey?

It's a website. Quite normal for sports stars to have them. It'll have very little to do with Rashford and be done by his management agency. People going to get on his back for having a website that he doesn't manage now?

Paul Pogba isn't an official one and JesseLingard.com is available if anyone wants it.

For those that wondered if he's just trying to promote reading as cool as he knows he's a hero to many kids.

He's been on the phone to Boris this morning sorting the situation out again.

This school meals has been a disaster for the government and they've just compounded their incompetence over and over again.

haha yeah, Kier just brought it up in PM questions, Boris said he saw the photo and was disgusted, Kier followed it up with official government guidelines that gave the exact food tha was in the photo. Boris with another DOH! moment.

What a stupid system instead of giving the family a food voucher they've given a contract to a company to distribute food parcels.

This means rather than £30 going directly to the family to buy food a company now has to cover within that £30 their own profit and logistical costs of getting that food to each family.

I'm sure a few families were abusing the voucher and trading it for cash so deal with that problem don't out source something like this to a private company that will look to maximise it's profit at the expense of the people in need.

System has been changed for next week. The National lockdown food voucher scheme will return.

How they manage to screw up something so simple I'll never know though. How did they ever think people were going to let those parcels go through as acceptable?

Next year once these Vaccines are out the way and hopefully life is back to normal Labour need to demand a public enquiry into the way the money was spent tackling Covid because it seems a lot of businesses have been given contracts they are not fit to honour by our government in the last 12 months.
