Marcus Rashford MBE

How poor is a nation when you can't rely on a government but need to rely on neighbours?

For the record though you have no clue on 90% of your neighbours, friends or families situation. You know what they tell you. That's why food banks exist. If you want to help make regular donations.

Would you reach out to your neighbour if you were struggling?
Its not for the person(s) who are struggling to reach out. It s for others to be intuitive and help in ways that are subtle

So this poor family needs to go on a fishing holiday to Scotland to get that cheap meal :D
lol, I was only joking about catching the salmon.
Sainsburys - 2 responsibly sourced Scottish salmon fillets at £3.25 you can check it out for yourself.

I think Mbappe has donated money to poor children here before. He, like Rashford, comes from a poor background

Well done Marcus, he has took on the establishment and shown them up for what they are, self serving and more interested in acting like a ruling class rather than a government, the latter of which WE pay them to do.

They don't like being called out by us normal people, so how dare this young boy presume to tell them to show some leadership, and do THIER job.

And if anyone thinks the wellbeing of the country is not thier job. YOU are mad.

If you don't think the people are what make this country then you are also mad.

If things weren't bad, we would not have so many food banks, you would not have had Neville and Co opening up thier premises in town opened up to the squatters that had taken up residence in cold months.

It's become Cameron's big society nonsense by the back door, where the government has abdicated thier responsibility.

Things have been quite bad for a while and Covid-19 is only going to exacerbate the situation.

Politicians spouting are just words, if they are now blaming parenting, show us how you have acted to solve this, what actions are you putting in place to fix it; it seems all too easy for politicians to be twitter warriors allthewhile not offering any real solutions.

And while I agree that we should be looking out for each other, the lot in charge need to do more; but I suspect they would love nothing more than for us all to adopt a 'well I'm ok' attitude which I'm sure is thier mantra.

Thank you Dr Marcus Rashford MBE, for having an 'at least make sure the kids are ok' attitude, and showing you are one of us.

You absolute legend.

Its not for the person(s) who are struggling to reach out. It s for others to be intuitive and help in ways that are subtle

And as I said how often do you know what's going on behind closed doors and of your neighbour has a meal to provide for their kid?

It should never be on the neighbour and in this current environment the government has no need to reject it. Have you seen how the vote went and looked at it?

So for a family of 4 that's £6.50 before you add anything else.

Families that are struggling can't afford £6.50 let alone that as one portion of the meal. You just don't understand the struggle people are going through because it's been a very long time and the cost of living has changed since you were anywhere near that sort of position.

No, it is not because I wouldnt buy 2 packs of the same salmon, as with most things the more you buy of a product the less a single unit costs.
In this case I would buy a pack of 4 Tesco Wild Salmon Fillets for £3.30
You seem to be of the opinion I don't want the kids to get their free school meal, I do and I am not happy it was voted out. But there are other issues need addressing around this and I have highlighted them in this thread. And you are wrong to say I dont understand, I have a brother who has been in a tough situation for a long time, I fully understand his struggles and I give him the support he needs. I also tell him he needs to eat sensibly, be frugle and sensible and use fuel sensibly.

I agree, educating people to live within thier means is incredibly important.

It is something that should be taught to all youngsters, and be being led by central government (it is a skill that has eroded)

It is all too easy to access cash, and the temptation to borrow for luxury items can be an easy trap to fall into.

But if people are struggling to pay back debts on necessities we should be concerned.

When necessities become beyond people's means we should be seriously worried, because that would indicate a systemic problem.

Unfortunately borrowing money makes the world go around, so I can't see this system being changed any time soon.

So you'd change your shop? What if you lived in a town like the one I do where the only place you have to shop is Sainsburys or Waitrose? You forgetting the fuel cost to change your choice of shops?

I'm only under the impression that you've no idea what it's like to be a person struggling financially in the 2000's (Let alone 2020 during a pandemic). I'm sure you'd agree with me on that? So you're casting aspersions on a reality you know nothing about.

It's fair enough you want an opinion on it. But your opinion is wrong in this case. You've got a head buried in the sand because it makes you feel better about ignoring what's going on. And let me make it very clear that you don't understand your brothers struggles one bit. If you did you wouldn't have made any of the statements you have today. I promise you that. You lack the empathy required to understand his struggles. I wish him the best though and hope he gets the required help from others that don't judge him for the position he's in.

I for one am proud of Rashford for what he's done. Forget his on the pitch actions. This is bigger than that even if you don't get that.

Seems you know everything that I know nothing about! your opening line above in itself makes the rest of your post not worth reading.
You clearly have a tunnel vision on this issue and refuse to see the wider issues of which it is a by product.
In fact it seems to me you are more interested in publicly expressing your own self righteousness and holier than thou moral superiority.

Looks it's a broken system but until we fix it the least we can do in the short term is make sure kids get 1 proper meal a day.

As with all things it's on us as the adults to make sure we elect the right people to resolve these complex issues in the long term.

Shoot...
...why don’t you become an adviser to Johnson, and have him lecture the nation on the wonders of catching your own food.
I can just hear him addressing us all with his usual bluster and incoherence:

“Er, why don’t you get yourself a fishing rod and some bait and, er, shouldn’t cost you too much, and then find the nearest river or stream and catch your supper for you and the kids”.
He continues...
“We, as a government, and er, well, l have cleared this with Dominic, we, the cabinet that is... we think this is the right way to go to get control of this dreadful virus and, at the same time you will, er,... sorry, just thinking about what l’m having tonight.
“Oh, yeah, we think you will all find this very rewarding, and will want to do it again and again. This way the government can concentrate on beating this virus and putting our considerable talent to more pressing matters.
“Don’t forget, when you are sitting on the river bank, in the cold, waiting for the fish to bite, please wear a face covering and have your hand sanitizer close by. We must all do our bit to protect the NHS.
“And, er, well, er, l can’t promise that you will all eat tonight... but those of you who do might just be lucky enough to catch some nice salmon...
...then you can add one or two carrots, baby potatoes, a few peas and a glass of lemonade for your children.
“And it will only cost you a couple of pounds you probably don’t have. But, we must all look at the bigger picture. You will be taking the pressure off me and becoming less reliant on food banks and state handouts.
“And that, er, can only be a good thing everybody. Merry Xmas to you all and thank you to the well meaning member of the public who wrote and told me l was too caring”.

Forget the Tories and their ilk that don't believe kids deserve a hot meal.

Rashford, the local authorities that aren't conservative and the community have come up and done themselves proud again.

BBC News - Marcus Rashford: Horseboxes, chip shops and cafes back school meals campaign

Tory on the radio today saying they need to provide the meals. And sit down with Marcus and everyone else involved to get a long term strategy. Let's see if Boris will back down

Marcus Rashfords campaign was very admirable and I am pleased it was initially recognised and honoured by the government. But I also understand the governments reasons for not wanting it to become the precedent. I am not sure what the criteria is to qualify for free school meals but presume it is unemployed and low income parents.
The responsibility for children is one that should never be taken away from parents, therefore if children are going hungry it is the parents that need to be supported in order that they can feed their children. The support systems for this are already in place in the form of benefits and it is the benefits system and benefits received by such parents that needs to be reviewed if considered inadequate. If a child is still going hungry then that becomes a Social Services case
As I said before, if a child is going hungry then I have to presume the parents are also going hungry and it is also not acceptable for parents to be hungry so as they can feed their children. Therefore that's were the need for support starts.
In extraordinary times it is only right that people, family, friends, neighbours and in this case businesses come together to help others with genuine struggles during the pandemic.

The club are supplying 5,000 free school meals during half term in support of Rashford’s campaign.

He really has got the Tories rattled on this even little lies like Hancock suggesting talks were on going are being called out as he refuses to treat this as a political debate. All their usual distraction tactics just don’t work because he refuses to be drawn on anything else.

Good on the club and other businesses for stepping up and offering support in addition to the support already offered by the government through the correct channels, namely the benefits system and grants to the local councils.
Well done to all. It's for communities to come together in such times, not just the government.

I would love to hear Bob Geldof's views on this. Somebody send him a twitter or something, I dont do all that stuff.

Thanks for the piece of drivel

You are aware that if you don't like a comment made by someone you don't have to continuously be rude for no reason.

We get you're a Tory sympathiser.

No, I'm a realist. You think everytime somebody has a shout up the government should just throw the dosh about like confetti?
Like I said before, there are already support measures in place. It is good the rest of society, family, friends, neighbours and businesses offer further support.
How do you think people got by in the post war years, it was everybody looking out for each other, folk knocking on neighbours doors to borrow a wee cup of sugar or a wee drop of milk for the tea, a few lumps of coal for the fire, or even to borrow a couple of bob. That's the way of the world as far as I am concerned. Folk look out for one another in their communities.
I dont have any particular political leaning, I just make my judgement on whatever is happening at the time.
You on the other hand make your judgments in a biased fashion based on your political leanings.

They had a woman on the radio yesterday, who got the extra support measures in place from the local council etc. They then put the council tax up and took it all away.
The vouchers can only be used on food too.
I think this is a very serious problem whether Marcus started it or not, and the amount of support it's gathering would seem to prove that.

In the short term they need to reinstate the vouchers, until they can find a permanent solution.

He's launched another campaign today to try and get young kids reading through his own book club.

Part of this will include financial support to kids from poor families to give them access to books to read.

Great initiative

That's nothing but a load of sugar coated shit. For almost 2 hundred years this country has provided a more than excellent public library service. In my young days this was limited to books, magazines and newspapers but there was never any shortage of them. I came from a poor household but never was I short of reading material, there was no need to be, the at least every two week visits to the library resulted in leaving there with piles of books to take home. Often many an hour would be spent sitting in the library reading books, or reference material that couldnt be removed from the library.
In Marcus Rashfords days there would also have been audio and music tapes, CDs, Video's, Audio books, eBooks, MP3 Music etc.........
All for free!! This is a regulated and statutory service in this country and has been for many years. It is truly ridiculous not to recognise and congratulate this fantastic public service.
If this supposed initiative was about offering kids encouragement to read, that would be fine, but it is not. With Marcus Rashford making statements such as:
'I just wish I was offered the opportunity to really engage with reading more as a child, but books were never a thing we could budget for as a family when we needed to put food on the table.'
The suggestion that families in this country have to prioritise food over books due to poverty is a total affront to the great service that has been offered by the Public Library Service in this country for so many years.
I think it's high time he got his mind back on the football, his school meals crusade was admirable but i saw this coming. He is getting carried away.

I think the sentiment is fair enough and may encourage young children to read more books (especially United fans). But yes, there are libraries, school libraries and I remember a library van coming to our primary school once a week.

He was getting a lot of praise from non football fans in my team today. I didn’t want to mention any potential distraction on the pitch as I thought I would come across as selfish when he was being called a hero for his efforts.

This idea he's got to get his mind back to football and can't focus on anything else. Do you guys struggle to focus on anything else but work and does your work life suffer because you have interest outside of work?

It's the biggest non argument I've ever heard. I don't know about you but I manage to work quite well and do other non work related task too. The idea this is damaging to his football is absolute rubbish.

The idea when people say this along with the other arguments they make is that he should know his place because he's putting too many noses out of joint. Oh how the daily mail and others have been waiting to write such nonsense as seen above.

Lewis Hamilton gets the same treatment. His other activities will ruin his driving and he should know his place. What is it with people and telling sportsman what they can and can't manage to do whilst focusing on their career too?

He should not be saying he was short of opportunity to read as a child due to shortage of reading material. That is total nonsense. If he didn't read it is because he chose not to and/or there was no encouragement to do so in the household.
Its as simple as that.

I suspect a lot of his child hood was taken up with training. All elite sports people don’t seem to have much of a child hood as they were out practicing whatever sport it may be.
