In my fallible attempts to find some transfer news what with the World Cup meaning the window has been quiet as a door mouse so far. I found this little link...

Shaqiri good as a squad option? Or no thanks?

I think he’s a cracking little player on his day but he was so up and down with Stoke. He has never quite fulfilled his undoubted potential.

Great player on his day like you said but he doesn’t have his day very often. For me a silly rumour made up on a quiet media day

Good player on his day but not consistent enough and not sure he puts in the hard work Mourinho wants from a wide man.

Fills a void because he plays on the right of the front 3 so he'd be a specialist for that position but my concern would be if he moves to a bigger club will he be more focused and become consistent or will the same inconsistency remain.

He was linked to Liverpool a few weeks ago so to me it feel like agent talk but if we can't get Willian then this might be the alternative.

For me the fact he's cheap means nothing because we don't desperately need players to fill out our squad we need players who improve our starting XI. Would Shaqiri be a better right forward than Mata or Lingard? Probably better in that position than Mata and maybe a bit better than Lingard who prefers to be central.

this has to be a joke, I can't see Jose wanting a lazy player like that, does he ever get back to defend?

I think he does but there are times where he just sulks and mopes around and doesn't really look interested but is that because he's frustrated at his team mates Mane was a bit like that at Southampton but when he went to Liverpool he was on it all the time and was excellant.

Shaqiri to me is a big fish in a small pond type player he just doesn't have the mental side of it to play at a top club turns up in big games but goes missing in smaller games top players do it in every game. If we were looking to bring him in as a squad player I could get it but we don't need squad players.

A short, slow left footed right flank player. Ok so it's Mata only 4 years younger. Not for me.

He's not that slow and he's built like a tank so he's very powerful and hard to knock off the ball he's built like a bull he's just a bit lazy.

I think the move to Liverpool made some sense as he'd be the backup wide man for Salah & Mane but Utd if we go for an attacking player need to sign a player of Mane or Salah quality to play on the right hand side, we've got players who can just be the backup.

I wouldn't call him fast. He is stocky but I don't particularly think he uses that. I just don't think he is anything like what we are looking to for the right flank.

In terms of the speed scale if Rashford is quick, Mata is slow then Shaqiri is a Lingard speed player quick off the mark but he's not winning the 100m sprint in training.

I think Mourinho has said he'd like a left footed wide player because currently the only one he has is Mata who isn't really a wide man so he doesn't feel he's got that balance. If you play 4-3-3 with inverted wingers (players who play on the wrong side of their foot) then you really need overlapping full backs to give you the width otherwise you end up painfully narrow.

I don't think Shaqiri is the guy but he should be on Utd's radar because if we can't get Bale or Willian who seem to be the first choice targets we might need to gamble on Shaqiri personally I'd have him over Mata or Lingard on the right but like Willian I don't see him as the player who takes us from 2nd to 1st next season.

I actually think Mahrez would fit us pretty well on the right side but he's off to City.

I think it is yeah,

I don't think we should be a club looking at players like Shaqiri.

But I said that about Fellaini

I'd have Shaqiri - I think the step up may be good for him at this stage of his career. If you can get the player that turns up for Switzerland you've got a heck of a player available to you. He's always tracking back for his country too.

He went to Bayern didn't settle, went to Inter didn't settle, Stoke has probably been the best he's been since he left Basel now he's a bit older maybe he'd handle the step up better but he strikes me as the kind of guy who needs to play every week otherwise he gets the hump. It's just getting a consistent performance out of him that is the problem the talent is there just doesn't seem to be on it all the time there are days where he just doesn't fancy it and will let you down, Neville was very critical of him before one of the Switzerland game and he knows what it takes to play at top clubs.

The Mahrez to City thing sounds like it's a done deal and I don't see Utd going in for him just pointing out that I think he'd be the right sort of fit.

I've been waiting for this one to come about. With more pressing matters in the backline, it wouldn't be a bad move in the short term before maybe getting someone better in. Certainly fits the bill in what we're probably looking for on the right which is a right sided attacker that can cut inside and has pace. At the moment we have Mata filling that option but he lacks the pace and there's talk he might be off to Barca with Iniesta leaving them. Played nearly every league game last season and at 26 he's entering his peak which will hopefully see his decision making and consistency improve. Playing in a better team might improve him also. I'd imagine with Stoke getting relegated he'll be cheap too. So in a lot of ways it does make sense.

Reports are he's off to Liverpool 13.5m due to a release clause in his deal.

Makes sense for them as they need a backup guy for the front 3, didn't think it made sense for us because we need starters not squad players.

DONE DEAL

Getting a little worried about the scousers plugging quite a few gaps in that squad if they sort the keeper out they could be some side next season.

Shaqiri on his day s brilliant, but those days a few and far between, and he has no idea about getting back. Could open them up.
