Just for someone who i have a good natter with now and again ... rooney2(another old fart)
H.R.H DENIS LAW 'KING' (born 24th February 1940)
Sir Matt Busby paid a British record fee of £115,000 for Denis in July 1962 from the Italian club Torino.Denis started his playing career at Huddersfield Town at 16,he then moved to Man City before trying his luck abroad in 1961.It was Bill Shankly who signed Denis as soon as he left his Aberdeen school for Huddersfield Town in 1956.
Denis scored for United on his debut against West Brom in a 2-2 draw on aug 18th 1962,that season Denis was United's leading goalscorer with 29 goals,he also went on that season to lift the F.A.Cup when United beat Leicester City 3-1 at Wembley with the lawman getting one of the goals.
Denis was the ultimate 'poacher' with razor sharp reflexes,'The King'the Stretford End use to call the 'lawman'
'Born in a fishing town called Aberdeen'
'The greatest inside forward the world has ever seen'
'Played for his country at only seventeen'
'Denis...Denis Law......King of the football league'
That was the song that rang round the terraces when the 'Lawman' came down the tunnel with his shock of blond hair ie 'Rod Stewart' and his shirt sleeves pulled down and gripped in his fist so that just the index finger stuck out so he could give his customary salute when scoring another wonder goal, which he did 237 times in 409 appearances for United.Denis used to put his body and head in places that others were feared to go,he was as brave as a lion,i remember a game against Tottenham Hotspur on the week before Christmas in 1965,we absolutely whipped 'em and the lawman was on fire,he pulled that defence all over the place, and on one occasion United had a corner which Connelly took,'Big' Bill Foulkes who had come up for the corner went to meet the cross and it looped of his head and was going across goal and from nowhere the 'lawman' got up to overhead scissor kick it into the top corner, what was so good the ball had to come at a downward angle because he had got so high.at first it didn't seem possible till we saw the Sunday paper and it showed how high he had got.....unbelievable.In 1964 Denis was voted European footballer of the year(the only Scotsman to have won this prestigious trophy)In 1968 Denis missed the European cup final due to being in hospital having a knee operation, not one to give less than 100% he had got injured against West Brom scoring his second goal in a 6-3 defeat 3 days after beating Real Madrid 1-0 in the semi final first leg of the European cup,a lot of other players would have been easing up preparing for the second leg,not Denis he was still going hell for leather for every ball and every cause and through that came his knee injury.
In 1973 Denis was sensationally placed on the transfer list by the then United manager Tommy 'the tit' Docherty ,Denis returned back to Maine road signing for City and as they say everything was history after that,we all remember the goal he scored for City against United where he back heeled the ball into the net at his beloved Stretford End on the 27th April 1974 which led to a pitch invasion,Denis hated it he didn't celebrate he actually pushed city players away from him rather than join in with there merriment,it was minutes later that a crying 'Lawman' left the field with his heart not in it,the referee abandoned the game with city winning 1-0 and with the other results going against us Docherty took us into the second division.Denis never kicked another football in English football again.Denis was electric and would snap up any half chance over short distances nobody could match his speed.
I remember the goal that never was...1968/69 European cup semi final,we had lost 2-0 away at A.C.Milan and in the return leg at Old Trafford we threw everything but the kitchen sink at them,Bobby Charlton gave us a lifeline scoring midway through the game,Milan were on the ropes and 63,000 fans were screaming and swaying in unison as red tide after red tide beat against the Milan goal,They didn't know how to deal with the 'Lawman' he pulled them all over in the first half but in te second they put two men on him but in one fleeting second he'd left them for dead and just managed to get his foot to the ball and send it goal ward past the despairing Milan keeper,Willie Morgan who was following up stopped and raised his hand to salute the ball crossing the line,in a flash a Milan defender came from nowhere and managed to get his foot round the ball and clear it and even though the ball was afoot over the line the referee waived play on,Morgan should have carried on and planted it but he didn't and the rest is history, the crowd were baying for blood as wave after wave of fans swayed and swirled in the Stretford End with rows and rows of coppers at the front holding back the masses, suddenly the sky went black as every object people could get there hands on rained down onto the Milan keeper and defence, the referee was pulling them to the edge of the box when 'The King'walked into the box and fronted the maddening crowd, the crowd realising Denis was in the box just stopped,he'd stopped them dead........as for the game Milan ran out 2-1 winners on aggregate but to this day i still believe we would have gone on to win the European cup again that year if the goal would have stood.
Denis played 55 times for Scotland scoring 30 goals.he scored 46 times in a single season for United.........not bad for a player who started off as a full back, squinted and wore glasses as a kid.............
