U21s preview: Sunderland v United - Official Manchester United Website

Under-21 football takes centre stage on Monday with Manchester United's trip to Sunderland one of 11 fixtures being staged across the country.

The clash at Eppleton Colliery represents only the third league outing of the campaign for Warren Joyce's title holders and spirits will be high on Wearside following the Black Cats' 3-0 victory in the senior derby over Newcastle United at the weekend.

Sunderland are also sitting pretty at the top of the Under-21 table, five points clear of closest challengers Southampton. United are 12 points adrift, albeit with five games in hand, following a couple of postponements.

If selected, England Under-21 international Duncan Watmore will be a real threat while Joyce will be assessing his options after a lengthy break in action. Joel Castro Pereira's loan move to Rochdale means he is unavailable while the midweek Capital One Cup tie against Middlesbrough is expected to influence the selection.

Jesse Lingard, a scorer in the win over Everton last time out, has forced his way into the first-team reckoning while Andreas Pereira and James Wilson will hope for a place in the squad on Wednesday night. Cameron Borthwick-Jackson missed the UEFA Youth League defeat at CSKA Moscow and Demetri Mitchell remains sidelined but Joe Rothwell is available following his return from a loan spell at Barnsley.

The game, which kicks off at 19:00 GMT, is being screened exclusively live on MUTV.

1-0 win thanks to a Tyler Reid goal. Sunderland were top of the league having beaten Spurs, Liverpool and City this season. Considering the players we had missing, a really fantastic result. Just the 7 days before the next game!
