Premier League: West Ham United 0-5 Manchester City - 10th August 2019

They’ll be over 90 points again but think they’ll miss Sane as he was often the go to guy when they needed a break through but they will have De Bruyne back this season.

Defence for me is a question mark think the better sides will expose this but they dominate the games so much that it’s not to much of a worry vs everyone else.

2-2 draw with Tottenham. But that doesn’t tell half the story. City had something like 20 attempts to Tottenhams 2. 74% possession. And a goal disallowed in the 93rd minute by VAR.

I also think they should have had a penalty. Don’t understand how it wasn’t given by VAR.

Was it a clear and obvious error? I agree surprised VAR didn’t over rule and give a penalty.

As for the goal that new handball rule only exists because of VAR and even then the wording states you need to gain an advantage from the ball hitting the hand the ball brushing an arm as on a corner is not what the rule was intended to stop. It’s happened twice in 2 weeks.

I really can’t stand VAR it has ruined goals because every time a team scores you have to think will VAR pull this back.

I didn’t see the game but sounds like it was a proper paddling by City just didn’t make it count where it matters on the scoreboard.

The way the law is interpreted it was handball. But the rule needs to be changed. It’s ridiculous.

As for the penalty I thought it was a black and white definite penalty. So did the Spurs fans I talk to.

Yeah but without VAR you can’t enforce it as no one spots that handball without the cameras.

I think it’s a rule made up by people who haven’t played the game and just want to try and get everything right they might end up with removing accidental handball all together.

Yeah I thought penalty as well on the replay but hard to tell if VAR is going to be used for those as wasn’t a massive appeal from City in the bits I saw.

It's a funny rule, they're trying to take away the doubt, was it hand to ball, ball to hand, intentional etc. Any hand contact it's a pen

I haven't seen the incident though.

It isn't a penalty though if you're a defender and the ball hits your hand/arm if it's in a natural position it isn't given as a penalty.

The rule has changes specifically so that you can't score a goal with your hand accident or not if it hits your arm and goes straight in or if you control the ball with your arm before shooting it's hand ball accident or no accident.

Where it's become a bit of an issue is if the ball hits an attacking players arm then drops to a team mate and he scores the goal is also ruled out so 2 weeks in a row we've had goals taken away by VAR because of the new handball rule due to a slight deflection off an arm when a player has challenged for a ball. Had that player been a defender there's no way a penalty would have been called.

I think the rule about scoring with your hand had to be changed but maybe they went a little bit to far on it by trying to make it black and white and removing the interpretation of the officials.

On the penalty that wasn't given this is where the PL has created a problem with their "high bar" for intervention meaning on penalty/red cards they will only over rule if it's 100% a mistake but with goals VAR has to check every goal so every offside is called by the marginal calls.

One thing that has come up is that VAR has a margin for error on offsides because the players move to fast for the camera it's only small maybe 10-20cm but when goals are being called offside by that margin should it be getting used?

Aguero was peeved at being subbed. Not sure what Pep’s reaction was about. Apparently something to do with the Tottenham equaliser

Yeah he's not happy with Aguero's work rate off the ball.

Sounds like Laporte’s injury is serious could be season over already if the worst is confirmed and it’s ACL they are short at the back.

There was a lot of talk towards the end of last season that he’d lost faith in Stones, Kompany and Mangala have both left so it’s only Stones, Otamendi, Laporte and Fernandinho to choose from unless they promote a youngster which they haven’t really done under Pep.

Stones out for up to 5 weeks, so by the looks of it they only have Otamendi to play centre back. I’m guessing you may see Walker move into the middle or Fernandinho back there but they do have real defensive problems.

Fernandino into the defence will be the likely solution unless they've got someone in the youth team but imagine being from the youth team and getting chucked in with Otamendi.

They might have to go back 3 like you say with Walker just to give a bit more protection could play Aguero/Sterling as a 2 up top.

Cancelo and Zinchenko are quick and fit enough to play as wing backs.

Rodri surely moves to CB. It’s part of the reason he was bought.

Wasn't he bought as the direct replacement for Fernandinho? The idea that they job share this season and Fernandinho was there to be the 4th choice centre back.

Has Rodri ever played at centre back? I haven't followed his career particularly but everything I've read suggests he's a specialist DM but Pep has converted midfielders to centre backs before.

It's basically Otamendi and Fernandinho at centre back for the next month which might mean they have to change the style slightly and not take as many risks building play from deep on goal kicks until these two grasp how to do it.

Injury probably rules Stones out of the next international games as well which will be a problem for him if Gomez gets a few games and does well.

5-0 after 18 minutes. Good grief.

Our 9-0 record under serious danger here!

I mean if I was Watford I’d probably consider just not turning up next time assume it’s like Sunday league and you just get a 3-0 loss better for the goal difference.

Safe to say someone poked the bear.

They just have so many weapons to hurt you with and if they all click on the same day it’s total devastation.

I’m the same. Not a city fan per se but don’t want to see Liverpool win the league and they’re the only that can challenge.

Not really bothered who wins the league, the only thing I’m bothered about is that we aren’t.

Fair enough. Liverpool winning it would absolutely suck though. Their fans... My God unbearable.

I can’t keep supporting City I’m at the point past caring who wins it as it won’t be us.

It’s gutting seeing both our biggest rivals fighting at the top but they have earned the right to be there if our owners actually cared they’d be looking at that thinking how have they let this happen and how do we do something about it.
