Not sure on this one, I'm not excited at all. Any thoughts?

The Norwegian league and a failed stint at Cardiff doesn't fill me with confidence but I will be interested to see how he lines us up for the next game, fittingly against Cardiff!

I am really pleased, I can only see the positives. It's 6 months and his only goal is to keep us in the league.

The fans will instantly be on a high at OT he will bring a great lift. Has managed Pogba already and said he would build a team around him so a Pogba happy looks like he'll make the team happy.

Cardiff were an absolute mess when he went there, it was a hiding to nothing that job.

Plus he'll have Phelan.

I can't wait to to see him at the club, so excited.

I’m buzzing about it. It’s a 6 month appointment. He can’t do much damage and he can inject some happiness in to the football at Old Trafford again. Yeah it’s an appointment of the heart but it might just work.

I've horror thoughts of us carrying on as we are, or worse, we start dropping down the table....

You could leave no manager in charge and a squad of the quality it has in it wouldn’t fall much further down the table

For me, there is little chance of top 4 so I would be quite happy to miss out on europe next season. No chance of being bottom 3. We shouldn't expect too much. Even when the full time manager comes in, there is a lot of work to be done.

I just want some joy, if we lose we lose as long as we play some entertaining football. Thinking I might download nowTV and get a Sky Tv day pass for the 30th.

I really hope the guy does well. I've just been shown a video of him in training roasting a player and telling them to 'f**king shoot' when he had a chance to and didn't. He was a forward, a poacher, I hope to god he makes us a more attacking team.

Has anybody any idea how his Molde team plays? Not found that info anywhere.

I just found a page on it....

'His Molde team is a bit like watching Liverpool'
Tor-Kristian Karlsen is the sporting director at Norwegian club IK Start and previously held the same role at clubs such as Monaco and Maccabi Haifa.
Karlsen has followed Solskjaer's playing and managerial career and his IK Start side have faced Solskjaer's Molde on several occasions.
"The way I see it, Solskjaer appears more ready to face a new challenge now than when he joined Cardiff," Karlsen told BBC Sport.
"I'm sure that experience taught him a great deal and is something that will prove useful knowledge if he were to get another go in the Premier League.
"Molde started off the season quite slowly, but as the team started to gel and develop they ended up playing some exhilarating football.
"In my view, despite ending up second behind Rosenborg, they were the outstanding team this season.
"And had they not faced a slump in form during the summer months, in which they dropped some unnecessary league points - the early European rounds took their toll - they would have caught Rosenborg in the end.
"Molde played with a lot of energy, pace and flair. Their home win against Rosenborg towards the end of the season was the best performance I've seen from a team in Norway this season.
"Ironically, it was a bit like watching Liverpool against Manchester United at the weekend - Rosenborg could hardly get the ball out of their own half.
"Solskjaer has also done exceptionally well by bringing through some new talented players this season. Erling Braut Haland has already been sold to Red Bull Salzburg for a huge transfer fee and Eirik Hestad ended up as one of the most exciting midfielders in the league."
That emphasis on adventurous football and nurturing young players is precisely what United are looking for after Mourinho was deemed to have failed to deliver on both those fronts.
So what kind of manager is Solskjaer?
Solskjaer is a principled coach but one whose man-management may have to improve if he is to succeed at United, according to former Wales and West Ham defender Danny Gabbidon, who Solskjaer signed at Cardiff.
"From being a player in the dressing room under Solskjaer's management, I couldn't really say anything bad about him as a person," Gabbidon told BBC Radio Wales.
"But whether he could manage those big personalities and be the guy to lay down the law when it's needed, I'm not too sure."
Gabbidon was one of 18 players signed by Solskjaer during his brief spell at Cardiff, and the majority of those were failures.
Guido Burgstaller and Javi Guerra were among those who quickly faded from view, while Mats Moller Daehli, Magnus Wolff Eikrem and Jo Inge Berget were three players recruited from Norway who struggled to make any meaningful impact.
At times, Solskjaer's scattergun approach in the transfer market gave the impression he was indulging in a real-life version of Football Manager, the computer game he said he had enjoyed playing before making the actual move to the dugout.
Given that track record, if Solskjaer is to take the reins at United, it will be interesting to see how much influence chief executive Ed Woodward will allow the Norwegian when the transfer window reopens in January.
Charming and engaging but where is the vision?
Solskjaer lasted less than nine months as Cardiff manager, leaving in September 2014 after winning nine of his 30 game in-charge
After one of his many defeats in charge of Cardiff in 2014, Solskjaer walked into a cramped, makeshift interview room at Cardiff City Stadium and started doing keep-ups with a balloon.
"It's good for your control," he said with a giggle, seemingly oblivious to his side's loss to Chelsea earlier that afternoon.
It was an incongruous moment typical of his short-lived reign, Solskjaer's sunny demeanour undimmed neither by Cardiff's relegation from the Premier League nor the fact this was his 12th defeat from 18 league matches that season.
Things did not improve, and a disappointing start to the following campaign in the Championship saw Solskjaer sacked in September, less than nine months after he was appointed.
The Norwegian and Cardiff's chairman, Mehmet Dalman, both cited a "difference in philosophy" as the reason for his departure. It sounded like the kind of excuse an eccentric guitarist might offer after getting kicked out of a band.
In truth, there was no real philosophy. That was one of the many problems of Solskjaer's Cardiff tenure: he was charming and engaging but he had no clear vision or discernible plan for his side.
Now, having been back in Norway for a second successful stint with Molde, it seems Solskjaer will return to the Premier League as a more rounded manager than the one who floundered in south Wales.
His exploits as a player have secured his hero status at Old Trafford but, as far as his managerial credentials are concerned, he is still something of a risk.
And yet perhaps after the dreariness that defined much of Mourinho's reign, a risk is exactly what United need.

His philsophy is Sir Alex's, attack with pace. Difficult with this squad but lets see. I can see Martial and Rashford out wide. But I would like to see one of them central and Lukaku dropped myself.

The difficult area is centre mid and CB. Hopefully he might find a gem in the youth set up

I can see that approach working (rashford and tony out wide) - and think it will work better with Alexis up front as opposed to Lukaku.

Only downside to that would be the lack of height to aim at if Ole wants to whip balls in for the man up top.

I'd like to see Rashford up front. Lukaku hasn't does enough. Sanchez CAN play right.

We need to build round Pogba, we play better with Mata in the team. Herrera can be the cdm and Matic needs to go.

The back 4 we can't do much with. Sir Alex would say lets score 4 if they score 3. That would entertain the fans no end.

The CM really shouldn’t be a problem. In Pogba Herrera Fred you’ve got 3 mobile midfielders comfortable with the ball at their feet and able to play physically. It should be a fantastic midfield

none of them protect the back 4 really. I do hope it will be a we'll outscore you scenario :)

Apart from the top 5 teams that tactic should work.

It's an interesting one this because to me he's going to have to operate with the players already at the club. I can't see them adding anyone in January as that makes zero sense.

Now these players are better than what they've shown but realistically how good are they? For me not good enough to bridge that gap back to the top 4. But they should be good enough to get in the mix for a top 5/6 finish and an FA Cup run.

Ole has a good opportunity now to get players back on side and get some positive results. But I don't think we should be blasé about this. This could go horribly wrong. He had a nightmare the last time he managed in the Premier League.

And what style does Ole's team play? I mean I know nothing about Molde and the style they play with.

@RichH2016 read what I pasted about 5 posts above.

I think it could be a bit of a struggle for him too. He's got to work with what he has, he will try and stamp his own playing style on a squad who knows they will be getting another manager and playing style in the summer. He can't buy or sell anyone.

For me Zidane is out the question now, why would they not get him in right now and give him time to bed in for the next few months.

I can only see Poch being them man to take us forward, no matter what he costs. Just sell Matic, Fellaini, Jones and Rojo. Thats deadwood cleared and fund available to pay Spurs for Poch (I like Rojo but he is just too injury prone)

I think they haven't appointed a full time manager because they want to get the set up above correct at last. I think it's the right decision. Also, in my opinion, Zidane hasn't done enough, I'd wager most managers could have won with that squad. His league form wasn't brilliant just the CL.

I did read the club would still go for Alderwereild and Costa in Jan if available.

I don’t think Zidane would be a good fit for us to be honest.

The only two viable candidates for me would be Pochettino or Jardim. They both have history for bringing through youth and having sides attack rather than just defend. Blanc is an outsider but I can’t see that one to be honest. But we need to get the whole structure right! This is the start of a rebuilding job because our club since Fergie left has been a joke. Woodward just wanted a big name after LVG left and it didn’t matter if they fit the criteria of attacking manager. This has to be the right fit now, someone who can start to build a new dynasty. I would be more than delighted with either Poch or Jardim.

I’m excited to see Solskjaer back at OT but also Phelan. It was criminal for Moyes to let him go out of the football club with his knowledge, I understand you want your own people but that was a bad move IMO.

Moyes getting rid of the staff that he did was just suicidal, I appreciate that you want your own stamp on the club, but that was idiotic of him and spelt doom for him early on in his reign.

Looking forward to having Phelan the Balloon popping specialist back at the club, and amazing what has happened already with the departure of Maurene.

Share prices have shot up $170,000,000 since the news broke, also, I've had 5 or 6 people suddenly asking me about spare tickets - this hasn't happened once yet this season.

Wont manage to catch the game this weekend I dont think, At the MEN watching a mate of mine on the Warrington - Frampton undercard, so will be on the beers courtesy of the VIP bar as of 4 pm - Oh Dear :p

I hope Phelan brings his shorts, because it's not going to drop to his trouser threshold of -20 this weekend :-D

On the assumption that this is the plan I have no problem.

1) Solskjaer is an interim basically auditioning for the job results at this point don't matter top 4 is written off and we are not going to be relegated... I hope!
2) Director of football is appointed in next 2 months the club can't allow the current decision makers to continue making decisions as they are not up to task.
3) DoF has 4 months to find his manager for next season if Solskjaer does brilliantly then there's no reason why he wouldn't be considered.

If we are only appointing an interim it must mean they're changing something in the next 6 months otherwise why not give him an 18 month deal.

Nothing about Solskjaer makes me think he's the right man for the job for what it's worth he's done well in Norway but who actually cares and he was a flop at Cardiff but that club was a mess when he came in so who knows where this will end up. It feels to me like they've hit a bit of a reset and what they might need if he's up to it is for Fergie to be a bit involved in things from above to guide things a bit during the next 6 months.

Just hope he can get off to a good start on Saturday Cardiff are going to be bang up for this it's vital Utd are as well you'd hope a cloud has lifted from the place reality is our players will still come up short in big games because they're not good enough but they should be able to put Cardiff to the sword.

Saturday might a bit soon, he'll have two sessions before the match, I also read Cardiff's last 6 form coming into the match is better than ours. Shocking really.

I've been reading a fair bit about him, looks like he learned a lot fom his Cardiff spell. He likes fast attacking football. I have no thoughts either way, I'm not willing to write him off or say he will be great. But I do have high hopes. And for the first time in months I can't wait for our next match.

All this positivity until we see the starting 11 and it contains Matic and Fellaini

Really interested to see what he does with the team will he go for a 4-2-3-1 or 4-3-3 system.

Personally I think 4-2-3-1 is the way forward with the defence we have I think you need 2 in front of them to protect them but the two need to be good on the ball I think we maybe need to go back to Herrera & Pogba.

I just hope he picks a system and style and sticks with it he will obviously need to rotate a bit over Xmas because of the fixtures but within 5 or 6 games I hope he's got an idea of what his best XI is.

It's all up for grabs now in terms of starting spots the next month will tell you who actually wants to be here.

Queue the uproar if that happens.

What are people hoping to see in terms of the line up on Saturday?

Personally a midfield three of Fred, Herrera and Pogba. Rashford up top, Martial on the left and Mata on the right. Cheeky little punt of a youngster on the bench? Now that would endear him to the fans even more right away.

I'm even excited to see him in a united tracky taking training.

I have watched a few YouTube videos on how he plays and likes to set up, it appears he like fast, attacking football using width. I can see we will be having some high scoring games, at both ends. I'm looking forward to seeing the changes.

I don't see Poch as a contender for the job if I'm being honest. Why would he leave Spurs? new stadium, champions league, great squad, they are going places. Plus Levy will want a fortune.

So if I rule him out, Jardim must be out or they would have gone for him as interim. It leaves not many.

I think I would like to see Eddie Howe given the chance. I really don't want Zidane or Conte. If Ole doesn't make it of course. Ideally I'd like him to win the CL get top 4 and get the job full time :) Imagine if he wins the CL, after all Di Matteo did. if we buy a CB in Jan then we could turn over PSG wth the right mentality, we have a good attack potentially.

It’s an 11 point gap to the top 4. I think if Ole bridges that gap or wins the FA Cup he’ll get the job full time, if not I think it’ll be Poch. The only one that really makes sense now. We could have got Howe Zidane Jardim Conte in now had we wanted them

if you were him, would you leave Spurs for United at the moment? It will be tough to convince him, let alone Levy.

Like I said above, there are a lot of positives at Spurs at the moment.

To have a big transfer budget and to be in charge of the biggest club in the world? Yeah I think he would leave Spurs for United.

Absolutely!

I think Poch may have difficulties bring players in due to a lack of funds too with the new stadium going so overbudget.

How much do you think he will get? enough to get the squad up to the quality of Spurs?

Of course united are a bigger club, but he's half way through a project, it won't be easy to tempt him away. He will be starting from the bottom with united, it's a big big job to rebuild that squad. What I'm trying say is the press make out if we want him we can get him. I don't think it will be that easy.

I guess the fact united are targetting the DoF Poch has worked with before and found Ali kind of proves it's what they are thinking.

I don't think it's impossible to persuade poch by any means. He will likely be better paid at United. He will likely have more money to spend. We are a bigger club, better history. Even in a dark 4 years we have 3 trophies to spurs none. There is a natural progression, he left espanyol for Southampton and Southampton for spurs.
