Manchester United have just made £27m bid for defender, huge suggestion from Spain - Sport Witness

Spanish football journalist Guillem Balague tweeted late on Monday morning that Manchester United had made a €35m/£27m bid for Nicolas Otamendi but had it turned down by Valencia. He said there'd be more on Sky later, however it's almost certain Balague got that information from Super Deporte in Valencia as he'll probably refer to later.

Super Deporte are the sport newspaper local to Valencia and where Balague got updates from just last week as Aston Villa closed in on a move for Carles Gil. Earlier on Monday morning, Super Deporte had insinuated Manchester United's €35m bid was made very recently - in the past week - and immediately rejected out of hand by the Spanish club. That Super Deporte have confirmed that a bid went in should be pretty concrete news - unless it's being used as PR.

Super Deporte are ahead of everybody when it comes to Valencia but they also love the club dearly. Not so long ago there appeared to be a bit of PR going on when the newspaper repeated more or less the same article several times over a week - the gist being Manchester United really wanted Otamendi and Valencia wouldn't sell.

The reporting then, at the end of December, was that if Manchester United wanted Otamendi then they'd have to part with £40m, his buyout clause, and that is again repeated on Monday. Even then the player would have to agree.

We covered those reports at the time by saying:

'Super Deporte, a newspaper close to Valencia, have claimed this week that Manchester United are interested and it sounds like Valencia are worried about that growing attention from the Premier League club. So much so that Super Deporte have gone to the length of publishing an article saying Otamendi would turn down the move and Valencia would insist on his €50m buyout clause. Otamendi is said to be happy and wouldn't consider a move to any club, Manchester United included - that could be wishful thinking by those in Valencia. If Manchester United or someone like Real Madrid came in and offered to more than double the defender's current wages then it's unlikely he'd refuse to think about it.

No bid has been made yet by Manchester United and it's highly unlikely they'd consider going as high as €50m, which works out to be around £40m. Otamendi may be one of the harder to buy names who could be interesting Van Gaal but he's certainly an option.'

Super Deporte do not confirm 100% that it was Manchester United who made the bid, they just heavily suggest that, and go on to say Otamendi would prefer to stay with Valencia. It reads very much like their December claims but with a bit of added spice.

He plays as a left centre back but is predominantly right footed in the video.

Valencia confirm to Sky Sports that they've received a bid of £27m for Otamendi. The club that made the bid is unnamed.

United denying it but I seem to remember they denied a bid for Mata this time last year. Sounds like Otamendi wants to stay at Valencia so unlikely to happen.

Balague:

On Otamendi. Sources close to the player say his dream is to go to the PL and United will continue trying to get him. Valencia pessimistic.

Man Utd target Nicolas Otamendi wants to leave Valencia, says agent | Football News | Sky Sports

Manchester United have been handed a transfer boost after Nicolas Otamendi's agent revealed that the Argentina defender wants out of Valencia.

He has been linked with a move to United since January, and his representative Eugenio Lopez says the centre-back wants to leave the Mestalla.

Speaking to Radio Valencia Cadena Ser, Lopez said: "Nico wants to leave Valencia and is going to do everything possible to achieve it.

Is he as good as the price they are setting for him? I have not seen him at all.

I've seen very little too. From watching a few YouTube videos, he appears to be a no nonsense tough tackling defender. He's apparently right footed, but plays at LCB for Valencia.

El United vuelve a ofrecer 35 millones por Otamendi - Superdeporte

Translation:

The English side tries again hiring of Argentine Central Otamendi but not reach 50 million demanded by Amadeo Salvo. Manchester United are only willing to invest so much money in two players who have received negative responses from the club, as in the case of Raphael Varane, or by the player himself, as Hummels made twice.

Consideration as a third option Otamendi makes your offer only reach 35 million although the possibility exists that any player could be included as Chicharito, as reported in its edition SUPER paper this Saturday. In the past winter market, the set of Van Gaal and offered that amount and was rejected by Valencia. Italian journalist of the Gazzetta dello Sport reports that Nicolò Schira contract with United until 2019 would join.

In the coming days, the agent Eugenio Lopez Otamendi, who will travel to Valencia to present the new offer to Valencia president, has slipped in different places there are people above the club president so they could understand who has agreed output Player with Mendes.

The gossip seemed to be that Van Gaal didn't rate him. Balague is usually pretty reliable though in my experience.
