Premier League: Manchester United 1-0 Leicester City - 14th September 2019

He looks done.

Do we think he’s rusty from lack of games or is it really game over for him?

He’s part of the midweek B team this season I think

Desperate times when Matic is coming in. His legs have gone and we knew that last year.

It has to be a first choice midfield of McT, Fred and Pogba going forward. We all know Matic was done last year and there were signs the previous year to. Doubt he will be here next year, his only plus point right now is his experience.

His contract is up next summer but Utd have a 1 year option which they’ll no doubt activate but should they bother?

He’s going to be on £7-8m a year salary and at 32 realistically you aren’t going to get much more than that for him.

Maybe he can join the rest of the bomb squad at Inter next season we’re a few rumours that they fancied him and Conte wanted to work with him again.

His legs have clearly gone and in the PL that’s a big problem for a centre mid now unless you have insanely high technique levels which Matic doesn’t.

No for me they shouldn't activate the extension. He does not represent what I believe we are looking for. They should cut there losses at the end of his contract as they should have done with phil Jones

add Mata to that list as well lovely guy but should have been allowed to leave on a free.

You have to assume when everyone is fit Matic will be limited to Europa League and Cup games this season but at the moment he is first change in midfield which isn't ideal.

I do think if they'd got Herrera to sign a new contract they'd have sold Matic but being short on numbers already and no one coming in hands were tied I guess.

I thought last season Matic looked off because he'd not done a proper pre season due to injury and was over used he played nearly every game but it does feel like it's now a case of his legs going.

Europa League: AZ Alkmaar 0-0 Manchester United - 3rd October 2019

He really is done.

We had a 6 month honeymoon with him but it's been over for a long time.

If you believe the stories we backed off Fabinho to take Matic because Mourinho was concerned that Fabinho wasn't a specialist centre mid and lacked experience so he wanted to go with experience.

His legs are gone which means he can't press, he can't move quickly out of trouble, he can't cover space when he needs to close someone down and when he has the ball and his passing which has always been conservative really offers you nothing in midfield.

Premier League: Manchester United 4-0 Norwich City - 11th January 2020

He's been fairly decent since returning to the team.

Yeah I would go along with that, I think he’s actually played pretty well and brought a bit of calm to our midfield. Obviously does still need to be replaced but is doing a good job right now and by heck if we didn’t have him we would be up the creek!

Agree with the above comments - pleasantly surprised. I think what is also helping is he has a Fred that is playing with confidence beside him.

Always felt last season he was over played he looked dead on his feet at times never got any rotation.

There’s a role in the squad for him but I think he wants to play every week but he’s played well since he came back but his days as a top midfielder are over he can’t really press the ball anymore and that’s a problem because his ability on the ball is only ok.

Injuries mean he probably stays until the summer but I think he should move on in the summer if it wasn’t for injuries I think he’d have gone this month.

There's talk of a new contract current deal expires in the summer and there's no option for an extra year according to what I read

Do you think he should get one?

If he's happy to be a squad player I'd give him a new 2 year deal

I think I would. Just because his experience is so important.

Yeah I think he should get a new deal, he has been impressive since he came back into the side and I think for his experience he should get a new deal. I must be honest last year I thought we should get rid but like I said he has impressed me alongside Fred so think he’s worthy of a 2 year deal.

The last few games have proved he deserves a new contract, he brings a calmness and composure on the ball which the younger players can learn from. He could maybe even teach Fred how to shoot.

As you all say above he certainly has impressed since his return. If he is happy to be a squad / rotational player he is certainly worth keeping with a new contract

Apparently he’s got a 1 year extension in his deal just seems strange the club haven’t announced that yet as surely they need to activate it before he agrees anything with another club? Might be that both parties need to agree it or can only be enforced if x number of games are played.

Makes me think bit like Herrera that he’s off and it’s just being kept quiet as long as possible.

With Matic 14 clean sheets
Without Matic 3 clean sheets.

I think this spell he's had in the side since McTominay's injury is the best he's played since he joined.

Premier League: Manchester United 2-0 Manchester City - 8th March 2020

Not gonna lie thought he was finished but credit to him, he has been excellent for a while now and today he was immense.

Yeah, I thought he was done, but he's been brilliant and made a difference since returning to the team.

New contract in the bag apparently.

This is the best he’s ever played for us looks fitter than ever just plays the game sensibly got a great understanding with Fred and deserves his new deal.

I thought he was a goner was dreadful at the start of the season didn’t even look arsed but since he got back into the team with the injuries he’s been fantastic.

Last couple games Matic has been excellent. Today he made some passes that were slide rule accurate. He's able to absorb pressure and play incredible passes at the same time. It helps he's a big unit but it's also a lot of skill. It's a shame we didn't get him as a 25 year old, he's really some player.

Contract extension triggered. Obviously this is just standard practice when a players contract is nearly up but I do think his resurgence has got him right back in the thinking for another extension to this one. He has been excellent since coming back into the team and has brought some calm to the midfield. Thought he was done but kudos to him!

Apparently talks on going about extending by another year on top as well.

I recall saying soon after he joined us that i hadn't previously realised just how good a player he was. I was so impressed with his ability to protect the ball. You just could not dispossess him. So I was very disappointed with his form loss, the longevity of it and had convinced myself he was finished as a top flight player.
I am now totally delighted with his resurgence. He seems to be playing pressure free and with a smile on his face which is likely further testament to how Ole is transforming the squad and the ethics which are simply based on, if you are prepared to put the shift in you will get your chances.

As the cynic I am I'm worried that he's done a bit of a Viduka that man was a world beater every time he went into the last 6 months of a contract as soon as he got his deal he'd drop off again.

Let's hope we can keep this version of Matic going used wisely think he's got something to offer to the team as he just plays the game sensibly and sometimes you need a guy like that.

Always felt under Jose he was over played and run into the ground physically he looked absolutely shot the bloke hardly every got a rest, rushed back from injury and played nearly every minute in every competition so maybe that extended break he had in the first half of the season allowed him to really get his peak fitness back.

Utd don't have many title winners in the squad who knows what it take Matic has that experience from Chelsea so I think he can offer a lot and he seems to be pretty popular member of the squad.

I think he is a much better character than that. He doesn't deserve having that levelled at him really
