Manchester United Player of the Month nominations for September - Official Manchester United Website

Anthony Martial, Juan Mata and Chris Smalling are the three men in the frame for Manchester United's Player of the Month award for September.

Louis van Gaal's men won five out of six games during the month, bagging 15 goals in the process, and there were a number of candidates for the prize.

Martial has made an instant impression at Old Trafford, obviously scoring in front of the Stretford End on his debut against Liverpool was the perfect introduction to the fans, and he followed this up with a calmly-taken brace at Southampton. After netting again in the Capital One Cup triumph over Ipswich Town, he superbly teed up Wayne Rooney's goal against Sunderland and has excited everybody with his bold approach.

Mata has been outstanding of late, growing accustomed to his right-sided attacking role, and is in the running to claim the trophy for the fourth time since joining from Chelsea in early 2013. In addition to scoring against Southampton, Sunderland and Wolfsburg, the Spanish star has provided some delightful assists, including the backheel to set up the winning goal in the Champions League success over the Bundesliga side at Old Trafford.

Smalling, of course, scored that goal and has been a rock at the heart of the back four, emerging as one of the best defenders in the division. The 25-year-old captained the team away to PSV Eindhoven and is having a major influence every time he steps onto the pitch. After being one of the nominees for the first Player of the Month award this season, finishing in second spot behind Matteo Darmian, he will hope to go one better this time around, which would be just reward for his efforts.

Actually a tough decision this month which is very pleasing. De Gea could have quite easily been in there and probably would have been in any of the past 24 months.

I'd personally go for Mata.
