He's actually a pretty likeable guy, he can look a bit stupid on social media but overall he's a good egg. Probably why Jose likes his attitude.

Although if I was a rival fan I would think he's a total idiot probably! :p

All the stuff he does on social media is harmless fun and it's good that he gives fans a bit of a behind the scenes look at Utd plus there's that one of him going and playing football with the local kids in Warrington where he's from. He seems like a decent humble lad.

He's obviously no rocket scientist but then why should he be he's paid to kick a ball around not put man on the moon I've never understood why people criticise footballers for not being the most academic of people.

I think we all probably accept the more Lingard plays the less likely we are to win the league as he's not the greatest but he has a role to play in the squad and I think we saw a bit of it last season when he played off Rashford vs Chelsea he had a great game there and that might be what Mourinho sees him as a bit of a big game specialist.

His problem is he can go missing. He needs to be way more consistent. But he has scored in some big matches and finals, which is a little surprising because his finishing also needs improving.

I don't mind him in the team at all. It's not like when I see Fellaini in the team.

I like him, when he's on his game he attacks at pace and can cause problems.

We have far too many players, especially midfielder and forwards who go missing such as Lingard, Mkhitaryan, Martial, Rashford (not so much), Ibra (last season), Carrick, Mata (occasionally). If we can get some consistency out of these guys we will be flying.

He's got to step up if he wants to survive more than 2 more years at the club, I think given he's only really had 2 seasons of senior football he did just about enough to get a new contract.

The wages are what they are so I don't get to hung up on that but he needs to show more if he wants to survive long term otherwise he'll just end up hanging around like a spare part like Young and contribute very little.

Going to be hard for him to get playing time this season unless injuries pile up but pressure is on him to perform when he does get chances. Hopefully he rises to the bait

Really pleased for him, never going to be someone who posts big numbers but need more than last season. He's capable of that improvement.

He was very good last night but obviously against that opposition he should look good I do wonder if his best position is in that role off the striker rather than on the wing as he's a nuisance to defenders who take to long on the ball and he's quite good in tight spaces and fairly clinicalin front of goal.

Can't fault his effort, he always runs himself into the ground for the club. But his only good enough for rotation minutes in my opinion. A griezmann or Alexis arrival in the summer kills his Old Trafford career.

Well it's up to him to prove he's worth more than rotation minutes as like you say he's clearly part of the backup who will start cup games and come off the bench in league/european games but if he does well in those games he can force his way in but it's up to him to prove that he is worth his starting space.

I think his best games have come when he's played central rather than out wide as I don't think he's quite quick enough or creative enough to be a top class winger but he's got good close control so he might thrive when he's more central and in games that are a little more open he gives you something different to Mata in that role which is a bit more speed and direct play.

Great tonight against poor opposition but always impresses when he plays central rather than wide seems to have a great understanding with Rashford.

Two classy finishes I must say.

It’s his inconsistency that will always hold him back. His capable of doing something decent and then following it up with something poor. That’s why he won’t be anything but a rotational player if he stays here long term. I don’t rate him but I can’t knock his runs and movements he makes off the ball and he did both very well last night. But that’s against Swansea reserves so everything in perspective.

Not worthy of a first team game. Time for him to go but who's gonna take him on £100,000 a week? He's another Cleverly, lots of promise that never really materialised and now look where he is

100 games now for Jesse and I think it's time to make the decision with him as there are maybe only 10 good performances in those 100 (not all starts). He can stay and be a bit part player or he can move on and try and develop into a better player as he just isn't good enough to start for us on a regular basis, second time I've typed Cleverley today but he left and has had a good career I do feel like it's time for Jesse to make that step to.

I think it's time to accept this lad isn't a winger or a wide forward his best games are when he plays central but he's not good enough to play there for us.

Well said. I think he would be ok as a CM or no.10 for a mid ish table team but he's not up to Utd's standard.

Yeah that's probably fair I think he's good enough to start in that position for anyone outside the big 6 apart from Everton because they have a load of number 10's and he'd probably be a pretty popular player at these teams who would get you 5-10 goals a season, bit like Josh King at Bournemouth.

Or he can stay at Utd and be the 3rd choice in his favourite position 4th choice with Zlatan back plus new guys likely to come in the summer and getting to play the games that the manager feels are of least importance... and Cup Finals because he scores in cup finals haha.

I don't think the club should be forcing him out the door that's not how Utd act but he shouldn't get preferential treatment because he's an academy product. 100 appearences over 4 seasons is enough of a chance for him to make an impact it hasn't happened he's not at the standard so should be allowed to move on if he wants, if he wants to stay and fight then fair enough but the chances he gets will be limited.

Correct me if I'm wrong but wasn't he also given a contract because he was one of the 'home grown' quota? Utd had to keep him on board really to make up those numbers?

As I previously said, it was madness of Utd to give him such a massive contract as he will be difficult to sell on unless he takes a big whack on his wages. I think it was a 4 year contract and he is only 6 months into it so as you say, he can either sit and milk it or go play some proper football somewhere else. Seems to me he's happy with a bit part player and who can blame him. If he leaves with 12 months left he will be bang into his 'prime' so will still have a good few years left to play somewhere else.

That was one of the reasons speculated but I don't think Utd are in that much trouble with the quota I think the concern was if he did push on which a lot of people thought he could then Utd were in trouble as he'd be able to hold us to ransom.

As for the contract sadly it's the going rate now for squad players at Utd you can't expect him to take £60k a week when Young & Fellaini are getting double that but what it does mean is he's hard to move as while that's the going rate for a squad player at Utd it's not the going rate for a player of his ability at West Brom.

Lingard for me isn't really the problem it's guys like Mata & Mhiki who earn a lot more than him who should be playing so well that we don't even need to think about playing Lingard because it makes no sense.

Very true. Miki most definitely but I do think Mata has had his day at Utd. He would be better off going somewhere else, a less high profile team, so he can get game time in a half decent team and be the star of the show and have it built around him for a few years.

I still cant figure for the life of me what is going on with Shaw though. Jose simply cant rate him anymore, you dont have a left back on the bench when we are crying out for one on the pitch if he isn't up to scratch anymore. If he has any aspirations of being on the plane to the WC surely he will want to move in Jan?

I think if you were being ruthless you'd have to say we need to replace both of them this summer Mata just doesn't quite fit in and never really has at Utd but despite that he's done well and can hold his head high but Mhiki has just been to hot and cold he's always been that type of player but the hots aren't hot enough to justify the colds if that makes sense. Rooney was similar but when he hit a hot streak he was winning games on his own before he inevitably had one of his 4 or 5 game slumps.

I think it's purely down to attitude Shaw hasn't reacted in the way Jose wanted to the way he's been treated the tough love hasn't worked in the same way it clearly has on Martial who was in a similar situation last season. Martial eventually got himself out of his slump and looks like a millions dollars again whereas Shaw still looks like the sulky teenager. You here a lot of rumours about his off field life he's not a drinker but he likes to go out and lets say enjoy the company of ladies. He lives in a city centre apartment with his mates who are like his little entourage and I don't think Mourinho is a fan of that as he thinks they're leaking a lot of stuff to the press every time he gets left out a story appears.

Maybe a story of too much, too young but you would have thought Shaw would want to play. You saw him on the bench last night and he looked miserable. He has the ability for sure.

Not wanting to go to far off topic as this is a Lingard thread but yeah Shaw a teenager £100k a week and moving him 150 miles from home was a bad idea especially when he joined in a summer when a lot of the old guard were gone/going. Vidic, Rio & Evra all left that summer from memory and Giggs had also retired so those guys who had set the standards and might have looked after him and kept him in line were gone. Giving young people that much money and that much spare time isn't going to end well young players need family around them to keep their heads out of their backside.

Alli when he moved to Spurs apparently turned down better offers from Liverpool & Newcastle because he wanted to stay closer to home, Lingard/Rashford coming through at Utd are starting to earn a lot of money but they've got family around them I think Rashford still lives at home with his mum and brother.

I think Shaw worked really hard to get himself fit before that horror injury and while the physical recovery went well it seems to me like it's hit him hard mentally and he looks like he's given up but that is based purely on speculation.

Fantastic goal what is it with this kid? allows the keeper to save a tap in from 6 yards but can dribble from halfway and beat 3 and score.

So much better in this number 10 role than as a wide player.

He's very hit and miss but I don't know why. He has a lot of energy and gets about but a lot of the time he goes missing in games for really long periods. Is it the way we play as Miki is doing the same.
