Fellaini could be out for 3 months according to Belgium team doctor - Sport Witness
Manchester United manager David Moyes had a much better weekend with a victory and the emergence of Adnan Januzaj as a real source of optimism. However, he was without Marouane Fellaini who has a wrist injury.
News from the club has been sketchy but as always the medical team of the Belgian FA don't think twice about discussing potentially sensitive information regarding their players. This has happened in the past with Thomas Vermalen, Vincent Kompany and Eden Hazard and must be a source of frustration for clubs.
Belgium team doctor Kris Van Crombrugge spoke to Voetbal Nieuws about Fellaini and said that the big midfielder could be out for a period of three months. He said that was dependent on a scan but it makes the situation sound worse than what has been reported in England.
The Daily Mail this morning said that Fellaini could face 7 weeks out if he needed an operation. David Moyes has also been quoted as saying "He's going to see a specialist, it doesn't sound too good but we'll wait and find out on Monday."
To be out for for months would be a huge blow to both the players and Manchester United. Fellaini was the only big signing during the summer and to lose him so soon and for such a period would put a damper on the optimism from the weekend.
If Fellaini has serious ligament damage in his wrist then it could be the result of a fracture, hence needing an operation. The British Medical Association guide for sport injury explains that after wrist surgery a recovery time of three months is normal before resuming sport. A tendon injury alone would see Fellaini return more quickly but the effects of the injury could last longer and his wrist may not be totally recovered for 6 months, leading to him wearing a protective cast for much of that time. It didn't Eric do Cantona much harm.
