Fellaini could be out for 3 months according to Belgium team doctor - Sport Witness

Manchester United manager David Moyes had a much better weekend with a victory and the emergence of Adnan Januzaj as a real source of optimism. However, he was without Marouane Fellaini who has a wrist injury.

News from the club has been sketchy but as always the medical team of the Belgian FA don't think twice about discussing potentially sensitive information regarding their players. This has happened in the past with Thomas Vermalen, Vincent Kompany and Eden Hazard and must be a source of frustration for clubs.

Belgium team doctor Kris Van Crombrugge spoke to Voetbal Nieuws about Fellaini and said that the big midfielder could be out for a period of three months. He said that was dependent on a scan but it makes the situation sound worse than what has been reported in England.

The Daily Mail this morning said that Fellaini could face 7 weeks out if he needed an operation. David Moyes has also been quoted as saying "He's going to see a specialist, it doesn't sound too good but we'll wait and find out on Monday."

To be out for for months would be a huge blow to both the players and Manchester United. Fellaini was the only big signing during the summer and to lose him so soon and for such a period would put a damper on the optimism from the weekend.

If Fellaini has serious ligament damage in his wrist then it could be the result of a fracture, hence needing an operation. The British Medical Association guide for sport injury explains that after wrist surgery a recovery time of three months is normal before resuming sport. A tendon injury alone would see Fellaini return more quickly but the effects of the injury could last longer and his wrist may not be totally recovered for 6 months, leading to him wearing a protective cast for much of that time. It didn't Eric do Cantona much harm.

Does he still require surgery? I don't feel great considering Moyes didn't sound too great when asked about his injury after the game last weekend.

Wrist surgery is thought not to be urgent, playing for Belgium, might have surgery afterwards if it gets worse or we feel it's best to get it done now rather than later. Leaves us horribly short of numbers in the middle if he is out, Powell? Fletch? Scholes?!

Sky sources: Marouane Fellaini to undergo wrist surgery in December.

January signing... sorry to get everyone's hopes up.

Fellaini operation delayed - Official Manchester United Website

United manager David Moyes has confirmed Marouane Fellaini will have to undergo surgery to correct a recently sustained wrist injury. However, the Scot stated the Reds intend to delay the operation while the club doctors decide on the best cause of action.

"Fellaini needs an operation, unfortunately. It's quite a bad wrist injury," the manager told MUTV. "There's a bit of bone and ligament sticking out but we've been told we can get away without operating for now."

The Belgian midfielder's injury threatened to leave United short in the middle of the park with Tom Cleverley also picking up a calf injury, but the boss is confident the club will be able to put off the procedure for as long as possible.

"We can put it off for as long as two years. It's not in desperate need of doing, but it's whether he feels okay to play or not," Moyes stated.

Fellaini is likely to play in the intervening period between his operation, wearing strapping on his hand in order to avoid exacerbating the problem. However, Moyes is wary that a degree of care and attention needs to surround the Belgian's injury if he is to continue playing.

"Obviously you use your arms quite a bit to hold people off in the game and it's important that we make sure his wrist doesn't get any further damage."

He hasnt exactly played much, and when he has, he may as well not have, so having the op at any time wont have any effect on the 1st team imo

Agreed. We've got Carrick coming back and Fletch too. Get the surgery done.

I've never known another United player to be written off so quickly. Even Berbatov was given more than seven starts. It's ridiculous.

I'm going to wait until next season. Hasn't had the easiest of starts here. Came in on deadline day, injuries, playing in a different role to what he played at Everton. Not been impressed so far but not writing him off. This season looking like a write off for him though.

Moyes: "Felli's on the fringes. We need to get him match practice but he's very close."
