February 6th 1958

Superb poem and very movingly put across by Sir Alex and all the ex players.

I penned this poem on the same subject at this time last year...

IMMORTALS

The last ball has been kicked
The final whistle has blown
Eight young men fell silent
But a legend has grown
For the eight Busby Babes
Cut down in their prime
Memories live on
And won't fade with time

A third attempt on the runway
The journey's last leg
Duncan Edwards, Eddie Coleman
Roger Byrne, David Pegg...
Tommy Taylor, Liam Whelan
Geoff Bent and Mark Jones
Would never again
See their Manchester homes

The Airspeed Ambassador
Ploughed through the slush
As the heavy snow fell
Making one final push
The required speed for take off
It never was reached
The aircraft it skidded
And the outer fence breached

The hammer of God
Cruelly, delivered it's blow
It's toll counted many
In the cold and the snow
From their fans and their families
The young men were torn
But from the ashes of Munich
Eight legends were born

Four minutes past three
February sixth, '58
Forever, the world
Will remember the date
The heart was ripped out
From the team of all teams
They would've graced Centre stage
In Bobby's 'Theatre of Dreams'

Forever united
In untimely demise
Their legacy lives on
And the red flag still flies
Around survivors from a wreckage
Sir Matt Busby would build
Trophy cabinets and terraces
In ensuing years filled

The floodlights they faded
But their beacon still shines
Every goal that is scored
Only serves to remind
Each red devil who celebrates
Of eight angels it cost
To bring back the glory
The footballing world lost
