Manchester United star says he's heading for exit due to personal reasons - Sport Witness

It really does seem that Patrice Evra's time at Manchester United is coming to an end. Whilst finding himself amidst a new controversy in France regarding the national team , Patrice Evra has let something slip that could start worrying a few Manchester United fans around the globe.

Yesterday morning, a rather candid interview of Patrice Evra was aired on Téléfoot, one of France's more important football related TV shows. The Manchester United vice-captain, in what starts as a rather platonic conversation about Frank Ribéry, finds himself attacking various members of the French press regarding what they have said about him in the past, including ex-France left back Bixente Lizarazu who now works for L'Equipe, RTL and TF1 (the channel that airs Téléfoot on a Sunday morning).

Whereas now the entire French press is up in arms about what has been said, it is what Patrice Evra briefly mentions at the very end of the interview that interests us the most.

After a 17 minute rant, the France left-back was asked as a final question whether or not he was worried that he still hasn't signed a new contract with Manchester United (his current deal expires in June 2014). Here is the translated transcript of the last 30 seconds of the video:

“Your contract expires in June 2014. Does this bother you?"

"No, not at all. It's personal. It's not Manchester (United) that don't want me to sign a new contract. This whole thing is personal. Manchester United's dream is that I finish my career there, but this is something personal."

"You can't say anything else on the matter?"

"No."

Rather interestingly, last Thursday, Le10 Sport wrote a rather lengthy article on the matter and stated Ferguson's departure as the reason behind Patrice Evra's hesitancy at signing a new contract as well as linking him with Paris Saint-Germain and Monaco.

If it is indeed Patrice Evra that is reluctant to sign a new contract with Manchester United and not the other way round, then the club has a new dilemma on its hands. With the ongoing saga surrounding Manchester United's interest with Leighton Baines, it seems that the Premier League champions have already thought ahead. Having both Leighton Baines and Patrice Evra at the club would probably cause a few problems, but if Evra is indeed seeking an exit from Old Trafford at the end of his contract, a move for Baines could be on the agenda next summer.

Another option is Luke Shaw. The Times, less than 24 hours after Evra's interview (coincidence, we don't think so...), have linked the Manchester-based club with a move for the Southampton youngster as early as January.

Interestingly, this was the first time that Evra has spoken about his contract situation at Old Trafford and the fact that the whole matter is “personal” suggests that a suitcase is already packed at the bottom of the stairs in the Evra residence. With Vidic also out of contract next June, Manchester United could find themselves needing to buy new defenders as well as new midfielders.

Edward Woodward. It's time to go unearth that blank cheque you were handed last summer.

I had feeling he would leave next summer. The club seemingly want him to stay so I wonder what is the personal issue.

Cue those that had hissy fits over Rooney wanting out to start up again over Evra.....

I wish him luck in whatever he does....

I think this is different to the Rooney situation, or at least I believe people will look at it differently

Evra has done his service and has been nothing but loyal to the club. He will be missed on and off the field and goes with my blessing

Disagree, manc. There are similarities between Rooney and Evra. Both wanted to leave in 2010 then both underperformedfor the next two seasons. Evra's likeable character and the media in England are two big differences.

Evra is entitled to leave, like every player. He's been excellent for us, a very close second to Irwin, which speaks volumes. I wish him luck too.

Evra hopes to stay at United - Official Manchester United Website

Patrice Evra has clarified speculation regarding his future by stressing he loves Manchester United and does not want to leave the club.

Following a recent interview in his homeland with Telefoot, the French defender was said to be preparing to quit Old Trafford when his contract expires next summer. However, in an exclusive chat with MUTV's Countdown to Kick-off, to be screened this evening, the loyal servant made his true feelings clear.

"The problem with me is I don't read the papers so I don't know what people are saying about me," he stressed. "I had a French interview and I said: 'It's personal' meaning 'I don't want to talk about it'.

"Maybe some people [outside] want me to leave the club but that's not the case. I will answer if somebody wants to talk about my contract because I think it ends after this year but then they have to talk with Manchester United and my agent. Me? I love this club so much."

"The only thing I can say is it [the French interview] was a big misunderstanding."

Evra captained the team to Champions League victory against Real Sociedad in midweek, taking over the armband for the second time since David Moyes was appointed manager.

Tuttosport claim Evra's agents have offered the player to Juventus.

Patrice Evra lined up by Inter Milan as next Manchester United star out the door | Mail Online

Inter Milan watched Patrice Evra on Wednesday night as they consider an offer for the Manchester United left-back.
Inter's technical director Piero Ausilio was in attendance at The Emirates Stadium for the 0-0 draw with Arsenal in the knowledge that France international Evra is out of contract in the summer.
He has interest from Monaco and Paris St Germain, however, the Italians are rebuilding their squad and also see the 32-year-old as a good free signing.
Evra has the same agent as United winger Luis Nani, who Inter tried to sign in January, and they have been alerted to the fact the defender is considering a fresh challenge.
Inter have already made a proposal to Evra's teammate Nemanja Vidic as they look to take the United captain on a two year contract with the option for a third year at the end of the season and the combative Serbian is believed to be close to an agreement.
Inter have Nani as a possibility in mind for the summer still but remain keen on Tottenham's Erik Lamela too if Daniel Levy will countenance a sale or loan.
United are continuing to evaluate new left-backs of their own. Southampton's Luke Shaw and Atletico Madrid's Filipe Luis remain targets. United were rebuffed in enquiries for both last month although talks will be resumed in the summer. Monaco also have an interest in Filipe. He has been out with an adductor rupture but is expected to return for the Madrid derby on March 2.

Italy would be a surprise. Monaco or PSG would seem more likely.

Monaco, I think. It's perfect for him. He will be returning home, live in a beautiful looking place and earning ridiculous money. He will also link up with Berba if he stays.

Evra is to be offered a one year extension, according to The Times.

Quite surprised by this one.

I wonder if we'll sign a young left back and both will be used throughout the season?

I'd rather have Evra and a new LB than Buttner + new LB.

Only player we could get that would make me think otherwise is Baines, as is a proven PL player. A foreign LB may need time to adjust, like Evra did. A younger LB (Shaw) could do with an experienced head in same position.

Regardless of what happens with Evra this summer Buttner has to go he's nowhere near Utd quality and he was surely only signed as a 1 year cover while Fabio was out on loan it's ridiculous he got a second season.

For me the ideal scenario would be a 1 year extension for Evra plus a new first choice LB I think Evra is an important voice in the dressing room and if he was prepared to play a "squad player" type role next season while the new guy settles in that would be the ideal scenario then the following summer we probably need to sign a back up LB.

One thing I'm sick of at Utd is seeing centre backs or wingers being asked to do a job at full back. The full back has become a really specialist position and one of the hardest positions to play as you're basically a 1 man wing expected to attack and defend at all times at the peak of his powers Evra could do both as he had super human stamina but now he doesn't have that recovery speed. When Utd play Smalling/Jones at RB we just lose that attacking balance and it's something that needs to be resolved.

The absolute jackpot signing would be a full back who can play either side that you could sit in reserve so when you need to bring him in you're still bringing in a specialist full back.

The best outcome for United would be signing Shaw and Evra staying for one more. Shaw can learn from Evra, but I doubt it will happen.

I think Shaw is horrendously over priced do some scouting in Europe and I reckon you'll find a similar quality player maybe with a bit more experience at half the price considering the rebuild that we'll be doing I'm not sure Utd can afford to pay the young English talent mark up. We've already paid it for Jones/Smalling/Zaha I think Moyes will be looking to find some cheaper alternatives on the continent where his money might go a little bit further than it does when buying from a prem side.

I like Shaw he looks like a player with real potential but £25m for someone who's had 1 season in the PL? Do me a favour if he does it again next season then you start thinking about it as an investment for me at the moment it would be a very expensive gamble.

It does seem that he wants the move to Chelsea and with Cole likely to go at the end of the season he might find himself there next season and fair enough they're his boyhood club.

£25m is steep, but Shaw could potentially be at the club for the next 10-15 years. I've not seen enough of him to comment on qualities, weaknesses or whether we should try to buy.

I think £25m for a LB is very steep as you're not buying proven quality you're buying potential for me Utd need to be buying a few more players who are ready now personally I'd go back for Coentrao who you could probably get for £15m as Madrid don't really want him he'll be 26 in the summer so you'll get plenty of good years out of him and he's a good LB with bags of experience. He could solve the LB problem for 4 or 5 years.

There is the wider issue of the whole defence for me with the season basically over apart from trying to someone fluke a CL win we should spend the rest of the season playing the same back 4 and keeper every match and just try and build the foundation of a new back 4 with the only change in the summer being a new LB to integrate. If Moyes can't find a partnership that works/stays fit out of what we already have he could need to replace the whole defence as well as the midfield.

You suspect there must be loads of players on the continent we could get relatively cheap. How much did we know about the likes of corzola and negrado before they came over here

Yeah, defence is a worry. I think a few of the younger defenders are overrated plus Evra, Vidic and Ferdinand are past their best/unlikely to be at the club. Not convinced Evans can reach the levels of Ferdinand and Vidic in their prime. Distribution is the first quality I think of when I consider Evans' strengths. Not sure that should be the case for a central defender. He doesn't really excel in other areas. Rafael has regressed after after an impressive 2012/13, plus his injury record is an issue.

I think we need to sign a dominant central defender in the summer.

Yep, Vidic and Evra cost £7m and £5.5m respectively. Though would fans complain about lack of investment and claim the club has chosen cheaper option?

Fans probably would complain about cheap signings but if they go and perform on the pitch and you see they're good players people soon forget about it people questioned Hernandez at £6m then you see him play and you think how the how did we manage to get him for that.

You should never judge a player by his price tag you should judge him by his performances.

If we somehow found another Evra & Vidic for under £15m Moyes would look like a genius as for 5 years they were amongst the best players in their position in Europe but those gems are getting harder and harder to find as clubs expand scouting networks. You look at players like Debuchy or Azpilecueta both good full backs who cost less than £10m (I know they play right side) hopefully Moyes and his network of scouts have been looking at players all over Europe and a club like Utd once they identify a player they like should be getting the deal done even if it means paying a bit more than we'd like.

I agree, JSP. Who rather than the transfer fee is far more important.

He played for Marsala and Monza between 1998-2000. I never knew before checking.

"I will decide in two weeks about what I am going to do there have been a lot of rumours, but I have not decided anything yet"

"My agent will have a meeting with Manchester and we'll see"

I'd be disappointed with this to be honest. Was hoping he'd stay and be experienced backup for a new LB (hopefully Shaw) next season. However it might be for the best especially if van Gaal prefers to work with young players. Get 2 young LB's in and let them battle it out.

Patrice Evra was in Turin on Friday to hold talks with Juventus and possibly undergo a medical, according to Italian paper La Stampa. The France left-back's Manchester United contract expires at the end of June, eight-and-a-half years after he moved to Old Trafford.
