Coronavirus in sport

Pogba's has had it, so he'll be ok Covid wise. His form on the hand is another matter

They've actually announced today a case in America where someone has officially caught Covid for a second time.

It is absolute madness. Sending players out having contact with each other all around the world and then coming back to the players that have not travelled. Managers throughout the world will be holding their breath.

Yep you can't expect every country to have the same level of testing that the PL clubs have to provide either as they can't afford that.

Liverpool had 3 players test positive before the break so maybe they've timed their covid cases well other clubs who now lose players will probably be fuming.

Sadly not and since we live in a world where there's now FACTS and ALTERNATIVE FACTS there's plenty of people in the states who don't even think he's had it. Just faked it so he can come across as the stronger man when compared to Biden in the race.

Pity. We cannot have a world where one of the most powerful men in the world thinks he is indestructible. He will have persuaded his followers that in the last fortnight he has contracted the virus, been hospitalised, been cured, is immune, and found a vaccine. There will be morons at his rallies that will believe that and pass it on all over the place.

Already happening he held a rally in Florida yesterday loads of people not wearing masks him standing on stage saying he wants to kiss everyone but he can't.

Those who attend these rallies were going to vote for him anyway so won't make much difference it's those who are on the fence that he's got to try and keep on his side or flip that is where elections are won in America. He got plenty over to his side last time in the swing states can he hold on to them or have they changed their view on him.

Utd have said they’re ready to welcome back 23,500 fans into a Covid safe venue I think they’re the first big club to really try and apply some pressure to the government. I expect the other big boys to follow soon.

EFL chairman has spoken publicly about the lack of support coming from government in terms of a support package like the £1.5bn given to the arts or a timeline for return of fans to allow them to plan.

If fans don’t come back soon I really worry for the future of football the PL clubs aren’t going to support championship clubs financially unless they impose salary caps like those in league 1 or 2.

With cases rising in the UK just feels like there’s no chance of stadiums opening this year as it’s more likely other venues that are currently allowed to be open will be closed again.

Not good signs coming out of the EFL with no fans wont be long before some of these clubs go bust.

There won't be a bail out coming from the government and huge pressure on the PL to help out but their argument is why should they prop up failing businesses while also suffering big losses.

Are we so far past the point of no return now that the PL clubs don't actually feel they need the EFL anymore?

A maximum of 4,000 fans are set to be allowed at outdoor events in the lowest-risk areas when the national lockdown in England ends on 2 December, BBC Sport understands.

Prime Minister Boris Johnson is expected to make an announcement later on Monday about the return of crowds.
He will make a statement to the House of Commons, and MPs will vote on it later in the week.

Up to 2,000 fans will be allowed in tier two areas but zero in tier three.

The measures are set to be part of the new Covid-19 restrictions in England.

Elite sport has continued behind closed doors during England's four-week lockdown, but grassroots and amateur sport has been halted since 5 November.

Great news for the clubs in League one and Two gives them a vital source of income returning.

Not sure how the clubs in Championship/Premiership will feel it's one of those better than nothing but not really solving the problem situations for them as 4,000 people in the size of stadium they operate probably creates more headaches for them.

That is massive for clubs like Dorking Wonderers if true. Been a real struggle for these clubs getting by.

Not sure I agree with it though. Currently moaning at us and shutting AONB cos of over crowding but then saying in 15 days time 4k of us can get together at the football stadium. (Actually 3k capacity stadium with an average crowd of 800 so that'll limit it but as far as the rules go I mean)

Can only guess with growing confidence around the Vaccine they're hoping this last short lockdown will do enough to drive the case numbers back down so the NHS doesn't get ever loaded which was the growing concern and they can get this Vaccine into the population quickly.

Sports clubs which are important community resources are really on the brink so getting the money coming in for some teams should keep them going.

Think the pressure was just getting to much for the government if they didn't open the doors to these businesses again soon they either needed a proper bail out package or they'd be gone for good.

Economic pressures over peoples safety has prevailed again, I have told you all repeatedly.
And that is why it is important that people behave responsibly to look after themselves and others as that is not the governments main objective, only to keep it at manageable levels.
When alcohol is involved people fail to behave responsibly. That is why I have been against hospitality businesses reopening. The whole thing is a clusterfuck. Only a vaccine will sort this.

Newcastle squad all have to self isolate.

They're supposed to be playing Villa on Friday. I wonder if it'll be a forfeit.

It will be interesting to see how that scenario plays out and if it sets a precedent for going forward.

Think there was a rule at one point about needing to have 14 fit first team players to fulfil a fixture if you drop below that you can apply for a postponement.

As long as they've got 14 players who haven't tested positive they'll probably be expected to fulfil the fixture as there's not much room in the calendar to make up games and Villa are already a game behind.

Entire training ground is closed at the moment so Newcastle are arguing they can't be expected to put player safety at risk by playing with no training.

Gary Neville says the premier league has to wait.

‘Is that a solution for a normal competition? Football has to be patient. It has to listen to the authorities and respect the basic health rules’

I’m glad the people with a voice are making rational points and not trying to rush the game back for their own benefit.
You can see Gary Neville tonight on Peston show, ITV now

Given everything going on won’t be long before there’s pressure to close down all grounds again.

Think there’s only 4 PL clubs still in tier 2 areas.

Newcastle has reported 2 key players who recently had Covid are struggling with recovery and they’re uncertain when they will return to first team action.

City had 4 positive cases within their players/staff on Christmas Day had 5 more positives since then according to reports.

Training ground closed everyone has been retested and waiting for results before it’s allowed to open again.

The game vs Chelsea on 3rd Jan could be in doubt as well.

Quite a few games off in league one as well.

Peterborough face 25 days without a game after they had an outbreak which has then coincided with other teams having to isolate.

Feels like at that level and below where the testing is nowhere near as rigorous the games might have to stop again. With no ticket income they could then furlough all the staff to get running costs down.

Anyone in the PL or Championship must be worried about a cup game with a team from league one or below at this point.

Yeah lots of games in League 1 and 2 off tonight. Cases are rising in the country and you fear that maybe sport may be put on hold again. More and more positive cases coming out of the EPL as well, Spurs vs Fulham in doubt tomorrow.

Heard something about a 2 week break being considered but how do we even fit that into the calendar without scrapping the FA Cup.

Sounds like the new strain could cause more problems if it’s spreading quicker and easier once it gets into a club it will run riot.

Spurs vs Fulham is off.

Called off 3 hours before kick off due to Covid.

A 2 week break isn’t going to work unless training grounds are shut and players forced to isolate meaning they will then need another week to prepare for a game.

Yeah if there are lots of postponements then the jam packed schedule just won’t be able to cope. Obviously if football needs a break for safety reasons then so be it but think the FA will try and keep it going for as long as possible.

Wonder if our Carabao semi final with City will go ahead next week, got to be in doubt surely.

Everything would just get pushed back and disrupt next season.

There’s no way the euros get cancelled no one is going to give up their share of the football pie.

You’ve got UEFA, PL, EFL and FA all competitions for dates in a calendar.

It must be doubtful, and looking at things it seems to be an opportunity to fit our game in hand in and get on a level playing field with Liverpool

If there's a big enough break I can't see how they play the Euros tbh, or it gets pushed back & next season gets pushed on out.

Not sure it could go back again as World Cup in nov/December 22 means the league season has to start earlier to create the gap.

It will happen this summer even if it means delaying the start of the 2021-22 season.

Could take years to get the calendar reset to normal timings but the show must go on as long as it’s safe for players given they are young and healthy the risk of Covid to them is low.
