Obviously if he stays in the EPL with us for the next 10 years then yeah he could probably break that record, as 10 seasons for 172 goals means he would need about 17 a season which he will get if he stays fit. It's all a guess really but it's definitely a possibility.

Would need to stay for at least 10 years and over the next few years score big numbers, Kane is the other one who could challenge it if he sticks around.

Could be Rooney's record Lukaku ends up chasing

Yeah Kane isn't too far behind at 78. They are also both 24 and can't see Kane moving overseas so he could definitely be in with a shout of beating Shearer's record but it's a long way off.

It's always interesting to see these types of lists. Heskey being 20th is quite surprising but his 110 goals are at a horrific strike rate for a striker.

I'd back Rashford or Martial to break the record before I put any money on Lukaku.

The surprising one on the list for me is Dublin. I didn't realise he went on to score that many. It's a shame it didn't work out for him at United - I remember feeling gutted when he broke his leg after only a handful of games.

Following his two hat-tricks, Kane now has 96 goals and is 28th on the list of the Premier League's leading goal scorers. Lukaku has 95 goals and is 29th on the list.

Shearer & Kane got to 100 a lot quicker in terms of games than Rom but they played in top teams whereas Rom has worked his way up.

The simple answer is no, no Lukaku can't and won't. I don't think he'll break in to the top 10! Mainly as I think he'll be off the summer after next.

If he gets back in the side, which I think is inevitable then he will get plenty of chances of course - my only worry is the amount of chances that he squanders, that has been proven this season. I cant comment on Harry Kane's conversion rate but the general opinion at OT and the pub is that Rom misses far too many sitters.

Kane is now on 113. Lukaku on 106. This time 13 months ago (according to a post above) Kane was 8 behind. Kane doesn’t even appear to be in form to me hasn’t since about April but he keeps ‘finding’ goals. His golden boot win was the worst golden boot winner of all time. Think it was 3 pens. 1 goal he knew nothing about off his back heel a tap in from a yard and a very good header from 4 yards.

Kane is a class apart like you say he's not quite all there at the moment but he's still scoring and he scores very good quality goals like that header against us to me Lukaku looks like a tap in merchant he scores most of the easy ones and none of the difficult ones. There's very little that's clever about any of his goals he just over powers you then smashes it in almost like kids football when you'd get one lad who's twice the size of all the other kids bulldozering them but without much ability.

I like Lukaku seems like a great guy and most of the time he's working his backside off and he will get near the top of that list if he spends his entire career in England he might get somewhere near Rooney but I don't think he will spend his entire career in England at some point he will end up somewhere else.

The one who really could get somewhere close is Aguero the rate he scores at every year he must be climbing that list pretty quickly I don't think he'll get to Shearer but he could possible catch Rooney as he seems to be happy to stay at City.

Shearers goasl rate was amazing, and he was in the league a long while, it will be some feat to beat that tally. Consistent is how I remeber him, whether the stats back that up who knows.

Harry Kane actually has the better goal scoring rate. It annoyed me them being the same so I checked haha.

Agüero 0.688
Kane 0.693

Yeah he was unreal especially when you consider he missed at least a year when he had that bad knee injury he was 25-30 a season most seasons even when the team he was in were struggling.

The one who really stands out for me is Cole as far as I remember he wasn't a penalty taker (personally I don't think these should be counted in goal total stats when comparing players) or free kicks.

Think Coles tally only includes one pen but could be argued it’s a skill. I remember watching his hundred goals thing and he was asked why he didn’t take more pens and he said ‘I was rubbish at them’

on that list, for me, the real impressive one is Lampard, so many goals for his position.

It is a skill but I think they can distort goal scoring statistics for example Lampard is 70 goals ahead of Scholes now he was a better goal scorer than Scholes but Scholes probably never scored a penalty whereas Lampard probably scored at least 30.

I just think it's something that's worthwhile removing from goal scoring statistics because they aren't really a judge of your ability as a goal scorer they're a judge of your ability with a dead ball.

But then you could argue don't count heading, as that's a skill Shearer was brilliant at but maybe Rooney wasn't. etc.

Goal scoring is goal scoring for me, no matter what the type. Some players panic 1 on 1 some panic at penalties.

That’s an 86% penalty conversion rate. Look at the thread we were discussing who should be the United pen taker. No one was near that. A lot closer to the 50% or lower some of them!

No a penalty is a very specific part of the game it’s a free shot at goal from 12 yards unchallenged between you and a goalkeeper a header can be from 1 yard or 40 yards challenged or unchallenged from various angles.

I just think hen you compare players ability to score goals you should really remove penalties because not everyone gets to take them.
