Purely for a selfish reason I'd like to see Valencia hang up his boots internationally now. Only to keep his performances levels at our club as high as they've been the last 18 months-2 years. His been nothing short of fantastic for us lately. Given that Ecuador aren't going to the World Cup. Given the travelling it takes to get to and from the South American matches. And given his 32 years old it's bound to sooner or later affect his United performances.

Like I said it's selfish of me. But I'm a United fan over an Ecuador fan. What's everyone else think?

I think Utd have to start planning for life after Valencia in terms of a right back over the next 18 months but him retiring from internationals would help us but I don't see him doing it. The South Americans don't tend to retire from internationals as they love playing for their country.

Antonio Valencia says Manchester United have a duty to fight for the Premier League title

Not sure I've ever heard this guy speak I know despite his 10 years in England his English isn't the best which makes him an odd choice for captain but I think Mourinho prefers a guy who leads by example rather than mouths off. He's seen how guys like Terry or Ramos can create problems for managers when they feel as captains they can challenge the manager.

I like Tony V but I think this summer we possibly need to look at a new right back as well as a left back not saying we need to put Tony V out to stud but I think we could do with younger blood at full back on both sides as Valencia doesn't have the engine to be up and down he definitely picks his moments to attack.

I agree with JSP on this. I’d like to see us go out and get a new right back this summer. What would be ideal is if Valencia could stick around for a few more seasons and guide the next right back into the Man united set up. Sort of like what Evra could have done with Shaw.

I’ve spoke before about wanting Valencia to retire from internationals but he clearly loves going over there even at his age. Another right back would help burden that pressure of having to get Valencia ready for the weekend after the international fixtures, especially given the fact he arrives back later then most because of the travelling.

South American players rarely retire they’re fiercely patriotic and its also a good chance to get home and be with your people and family when you spend most of the year so far away. These boys often fly half way around the world with an injury just to play friendlies you hear a lot say they play in Europe for the money but they play internationals for the love of the game.

Agree keep him around but need a younger first choice who’s just coming into his peak.

Premier League: Newcastle United 1-0 Manchester United - 11th February 2018

He is no longer the attacking outlet he once was. A new right back is required in the summer.

Could easily have seen or the high foot at the end.

Think we got 2 good seasons out of him at RB but he hasn’t got the engine to be up and down that line, doesn’t create any chances but chips in with a few goals.

A longer term solution needs to be found.

Champions League: Sevilla 0-0 Manchester United - 21st February 2018

Valencia’s form has dramatically nose dived.

I’m starting think a new right back in the summer is a bigger priority than a new left back.

Yep, think i've mentioned it before but I read a few months ago, he was constantly having to ice his knee and was often missing or sitting out parts of training sessions because of it. It looks as though it's taken it's toll on him and i'd agree a new RB is needed. Have said for a few months that full back and midfield are bigger issues than CB due to the likelihood of players leaving/retiring/coming to the end of their careers. While I think we need better CB's, they're all of a good age and we have Tuanzebe (& Fosu-Mensah possibly) coming behind them so it's an area that may still come good. In midfield we have 2 leaving this summer while at full back we possibly have a few leaving while Valencia and Young are nearing retirement, leaving Shaw as the only one (and there's still doubts about him), there's no one coming behind banging the door down in these positions and it's not going to improve without investment. I'm not convinced the midfield and full back issue will be fully resolved this summer never mind CB. It's a lengthy process unfortunately and Mourinho I think is doing a good job at bringing us through it, even though on-pitch performances are getting worse.

100% agree a new right back is needed in the summer and so is a new left back either as a starter if we don't trust Shaw or a backup if we make him the number 1.

I think the summer spending has to be a right back, left back and 2 centre mids plus make the use of the kids coming back where we can which hopefully allows us to clear out a lot of players who just aren't good enough.

His form has definitely fallen off a cliff and he just looks dead on his feet all the time. It reminds of when Zabaleta started to look finished, his legs had gone and he started to become a liability for City. His thrusts up field are basically non existent now. I agree with you guys that a right back is a must.

If you had told me a few years back our first choice right and left back would be Valencia and Young, I would have laughed you out of town! We need to have faith in Shaw and get in a new RB.

Say it for about the tenth time lol TIMO FOSU MENSAH, if we go out and buy a new right back before giving this lad a chance I will be fuming, been class at Palace, give him a chance to make it his own.

Oh so you rate TFM? Haha.

I guess I still have designs on TFM becoming a top midfielder. Think he has all the attributes to be a top midfielder. However well he’s doing at Palace I still think we need an established right back to come in. TFM can be a more than capable back up.

I rate TFM as a defender at right back, but we need better in attack from right back. The issue I have with our full backs is they don't do enough in attack, for former wingers they contribute almost nothing. That doesn't have to mean loads of assists, Evra didn't return loads of assists but he drove us forward a lot from left back, same goes for most of those right backs we had around the same time, Rafael wouldn't pick up many assists but he would get us going forward and overlap.

TFM shouldn't be a right back, he'll surely be a central player either in defence or midfield. Would be an absolute waste at right back I think.

Champions League: Manchester United 1-2 Sevilla - 13th March 2018

I hate saying it, but he's finished as a first team regular.

Think he's had a nice swan song as a right back over the last 2 years but I tend to agree him and Young can't be the future in these positions and it needs to be addressed in the summer they can still pull out the odd big performance but full back areas are very weak.

Not saying both need shipping out but neither should be starting next season as the first choice in these positions.

FA Cup Semi-Final: Manchester United 2-1 Tottenham Hotspur - 21st April 2018

He was pretty poor. He offered very little going forward.

What the hell was he thinking when he gave that ball away. Jogged to it when he could have got to it comfortably and needlessly put us under pressure

Not even sure i’d keep him around as back up now. His legs have well and truly gone. He might be best just calling it a day.

Obviously love the guy but he’s not been the same player since late December

Rumours were he’s been playing through the pain barrier for most of the season but it’s time to move on this summer Mourinho will surely rebuild his defence and he has to start with full backs on both sides.

Son is a very good winger and Valencia handled him ok but you can see his legs have gone he can’t get up and down so the opposition winger doesn’t get forced back.

If he wants to stay as backup and fight for his spot that’s fine he’s earned that right as has Young but both need to be replaced with younger specialist full backs this summer.

I can't understand why Valencia can't cross anymore. It's like he's totally forgotten how to do it. On the occasions he gets down the other end of the pitch he 9 times out of 10 puts a 45 degree ball back to whoever is behind him. On the very rare occasion he does attempt a cross he smashes it as hard as he can low. Very odd for an ex winger. I still believe Young would have been better there over the last few games as he had a decent cross on his right and it would make sense to put him right as he does the same as Valencia on the left as he hasnt got a left foot. Better to have one full back that can put a decent cross in to big Rom rather than none.

He used to be able to create the space for the cross with his speed and power but he doesn't have the speed to create the angle anymore plus his crossing was never actually that good he rarely picked out a man he'd just put it in % areas either chipped back to penalty spot or most of the time he smashed it low and hard across 6 yard box were his default settings.

Valencia gave us 2 really good seasons at RB but you could see the cracks forming this season generally these cracks haven't left us to exposed defensively but it's taken him away as an attacking outlet because he can't do the recovery runs anymore so he holds back.
