Thursday nights BT sport doesn't quite have the same ring to it as the channel 5 days but we embark on another European campaign in the bastard child of European football. A competition so stupid that teams that fail in the big competition are put into it half way through as punishment.

Anyway things I know about FC Astanna they're from Kazakhstan which is bloody miles away and the away fixture will be the furthest the reds have ever travelled for a European game.

You have to assume it's going to be a major rotation for this one with a number of the kids getting chances from the start in the first XI with a few of the senior guys alongside to guide them.

Romero

Tuenzebe Jones Maguire Rojo

Fred Periera

Greenwood Gomes Chong

Rashford

I don't think Dalot is fit so I guess Tuenzebe might have to play at right back there's rumours that Williams might get a call up to play at left back but I think Ole might try to give Rojo a run out as he's not played any football this season so far.

In midfield I think he'll want to give Fred some minutes probably alongside Periera or Matic but hopefully we will see Garner on the bench.

Bit harder up top with so few options I think he'll give Rashford the start and play the youngsters in behind him.

I don't really believe in just chucking all the kids in it's got to be done sensibly we may see Lingard start if he's recovered from illness in one of the attacking midfield positions to give us a bit more experience in the attack.

The risk as always is a heavily rotated team up against a team that is used to playing together every week can see you caught out and this game for the Astanna players is huge I doubt many of them will have played at a ground like Old Trafford before so they'll be bang up for it but these guys need to match that as a good performance here could get you in the team for the league matches.

I would normally agree with not throwing all the kids in at once but these lads aren't getting any fame time worth talking about at all. A couple of them have had odd minutes off tbe bench but in truth hardly anything at all.

It's that balance between giving them a chance for the sake of it and giving them a chance in the right environment I don't believe in just chucking them in any seeing what happens but I'd be saying there's 6 games here plus league cup that are yours put a few senior guys around them and say this is your audition.

These lads haven't really had any experience of mens football they've only played youth team football it's not like the lads at Chelsea who have had a year or two out on loan these boys have all been playing U23 football which is not the same.

For me this is the perfect training environment for them

I think we should play most of the kids to be honest, I know we need to win the trophy but these guys need some exposure and will only get better by playing. I wouldn’t be reckless and have every young guy play but would probably play something like:

Romero

Tuanzebe - Jones - Maguire - Rojo

Fred - Matic - Pereira

Greenwood - Gomes - Chong

Rashford
No idea if Astana are any good but my informed opinion should be that anything other than an annihilation would be disappointing!

Meh. Why not just go all out and get Garner involved too. What do we gain from playing Periera or Matic? If we lose oh well. We’ve got 5 games to sort it out.

To be fair i would play all the kids if we are allowed 12 players

We've given Periera a new contract we need to give him some playing time even if the plan is to sell him next summer he needs to be playing some games otherwise what was the point? I think they should have let him go I don't see what the lad brings but the club must see something probably a few £ signs.

It's the same with Matic if you're going to have people around the squad they need to be playing otherwise they get frustrated and create a bad atmosphere. I'd be having Garner on the bench and looking to bring him on for 30 minutes.

I want Fred to play the full 90 minutes got to start building his fitness levels up as the blokes never looked fit since the day he arrived.

Last I heard he was out in China seeing a specialist over his injury.

Another one of those guys who seems to spend more time in the treatment room than out of it like Fred neither of these boys has looked fit since they arrived.

James, Martial, Pogba and Shaw all out.

Dalot and Lingard back.

Ole also confirmed Tuanzebe, Romero and Greenwood will all play.

Ole said we would see the youngsters, I guess Gomes would be on the bench but I hope he gets some game time. I am guessing Tuanzebe and Greenwood will start. Also maybe Chong because James has been ruled out.

Not gonna lie that’s the most excited I’ve been about a line up for quite some time (Rojo and Matic aside).

Good to see some of the younger guys get games can’t really complain about the line up.

I really hoped I’d never see Rojo in a Utd shirt again a few Europe league games might get him sold in January.

So I have to say... Gomes looks a really good clever player. He has a picture in his mind and executes. Very impressed. Chong though? I've seen him a few times and not really impressed at all. He looks rushed and his first touch is always backwards or to kill the ball.

Tuanzebe looks so composed... He looks a class act.

Funny... I watched the whole game to this point... But taking Gomes off and bringing Mata and Lingard on I'm turning off now. Back to boring dross.

And yes I appreciate Greenwood has just scored a cracker.

Does anyone else tend to struggle to watch United these days? I find it so tedious.

To be fair some of the later Fergie sides were a grind to watch but they were functional and would win.

As for last night enjoyed the first hour thought we created plenty of chances with a team that had just been chucked together but after 60 the team was blowing lots of players who probably needed 90 minutes in the legs who've barely played at all.

Thought the subs he made were the right calls at the time.

I'd happily watch this team play in the Europa league all season my only guess is in midfield Periera/Garner may come in for Fred and we might see Mata start a few of the games as it's unlikely Rashford will start these games.

Think we learned

Gomes and Chong aren't quite ready yet and need more time
Tuenzebe and Greenwood are good enough to play in the first team maybe not as starters but certainly first change
Fred should be starting in league games now that he's fit.
Jones is still a liability
Rojo is pure banter the only thing missing last night was him trying to 2 foot someone we had the full Rojo experience.
Romero is a safe pair of hands
Rashford still doesn't have that killer instinct to be a centre forward more work required.
That new singing section seems to create a decent atmosphere.

You think Fred gets moved to the first team and that's why he doesn't play? Because I thought he did well last night.

Some games yes but I still enjoy watching the matches because they are the team I support at the end of the day. Got to take the rough with the smooth, some of the Fergie seasons we were not free flowing but other seasons we were wonderful to watch. The good times will roll back in!

I mean that's great that you feel that way. Perhaps that's just where I'm at with United? They don't entertain me and so I tend to not watch much of them. Whereas with my Philadelphia Eagles I watch even when they are struggling.

Yeah once he's fit he's got to be in the first team. I'd probably say bench vs West Ham, start vs Rochdale next week then start vs Arsenal the following Monday. Think Thursday to Sunday might be pushing a bit to hard to soon.

I'm hoping that once he's fit they'll put him alongside McTominay and play Pogba further forward.

My main issue with Fred is he's never looked fit enough to play 90 minutes that needs sorting out as he's in the prime of his life fitness wise the other issue about taking 1 to many touches is hopefully something we can improve he needs to be able to play one or two touch in midfield at the moment it's 2 or 3 and at this level those extra touches kill momentum.

Transfer rumor a season late Jones play in my only match with United last season next season my expected are whole season in Viasat Football even with that transfer I didn't expect but soon Sancho is clear ins ..
