Everytime there is a pen against us, you know it will be a goal unless they miss the target. De Gea is awful at penalties, he needs to improve this.

I think a lot got made of this during the world cup because he didn't save any penalties think he faced something like 8 and let in 8 but from memory there was only 1 he could get anywhere near.

You get some keepers who are penalty specialists there was a guy in Spain who was a pretty average keeper but his penalty record was over 50% saved think he was called Diego Lopez.

Not everyone is good at saving penalties De Gea I think for Utd has saved 2 maybe 3 penalties in normal play but really you shouldn't be blaming your keeper for not saving penalties as in that situation he's not in charge. Schmeichel didn't save many penalties either.

However, I do think he can improve because I think he falls for the players who wait for him to move trick I think if he stays up longer he will save against these guys because his reflexes are so good but normally he tends to be someone who picks a side and goes early.

I didn't even know there was a thing in th world cup.

His recored at united is awful, he must go early because he seems to go the wrong way more often than not.

There used to be an ipswich keeper, Paul Cooper. His penalty record was amazing, from my distant memory. Not that there is any relevance in that :-D

His career record not including shoot outs he’s saved 11 of 49. So 22% I think the average is roughly 30% now days.

It’s got worse recently though. The last pen he saved was Lukaku’s in the FA Cup semi. He’s conceded 15 straight since then. So before that he had a decent record of 11 saved from 34.

There was a big thing in the world cup about it in Spain because he became the fall guy for them flopping in the tournament because he doesn't have his cheer leaders back home when Pique or Ramos gave away a penalty that he then didn't save it was his fault.

He's not having a great season by his ridiculously high standards and yeah he made a cock up yesterday but I don't really think you can blame keepers for letting in penalties, the deck is so heavily stacked against keepers in that situation. I do think he can improve and I do think he goes to early which allows players to wait it could be a nerves thing like you say it's a long time since he stopped one.

I always think keepers should stay still and back themselves to react and save the bad penalties that go central don't go early and try to get the ones in the corners because you can't get them. I think that is what the keepers with good penalty records do.

What's happening with De Gea right now is something I feared and one of the reasons why I don't think he'll be worth the wages he's asking for. With an improved defence he won't face the high number of shots he usually does and his concentration won't be as good. And with a reduced number of shots, is the rest of his game good enough? He's not commanding, he's not vocal, he's ok with his feet (something I think is overrated in the game anyway) and he's not a keeper that will rush of his line to sweep up.

At fault for the first but it does look like it's bending into the corner he moves towards before swerving away the opposite way. It looks a lot worse in slow motion.

I don't buy that. He was fine in the last season under Fergie pretty sure he got PFA team of the year in a much better team and the defence hasn't really improved that much under Ole the fact is we just don't do as much defending because we actually attack teams. The question of him being worth the money is a strange one he probably isn't worth the money but he's earned the money and given the cost of losing him he's going to command a high wage. In a strange way giving him a big contract sends out the right message that you earn your money at Utd you don't just get given it.

I do think the defence/midfield need to be questioned why are they letting Xhaka a dangerous long range shooter a free shot at goal? De Gea messed up by not reading the swerve but it was so aggressive and moving so quick he really had no chance once it moved and he was made to look a right tit.

It’s a shocker but he steps left as the ball swerved right. It actually looks far worse a mistake than it actually was. De Gea is the best keeper in the world bar none for me. If we are going to play with a slightly higher line there aren’t many keepers i’d prefer a player to be going through one on one against. He stays big until the last minute and makes great reaction saves most wouldn’t get to.

Premier League: Wolverhampton Wanderers 2-1 Manchester United - 2nd April 2019

Not sure what he was doing for the second goal.

Think it highlighted a bit of a weakness in his game he’s not a brave dive at strikers feet type of keeper he’s reactive not proactive in these situations backs his reactions but think 3 different people had a swing at that and he ends up doing nothing.

Quite honestly it was really weak goalkeeping from him. He should have cleared ball, defender and attacker right there.

Yes, I saw that a couple of days ago, awful goalkeeping from De Gea

Stuart Pearce was saying, during the West Ham game, although De Gea mad a couple of decent saves, he does cause a lot of problems for us, becasue we concede possession from him so much. His lack of appetite to pass the ball out from the back becasue he doesn't want it back means he launches he ball forward all the time, and we often lose possession straight back to the opponents.

He was saying this is why West Ham had so much of the possession stats.

Maybe we do need to move on from De Gea, to turn down 350 grand a week is a bit of a joke.

Not sure I buy that he’s happy to pass it short if people show for it but generally Utd’s recent managers seem to want us to go long rather than build up from the back. Problem with this tactic is we don’t really have a target man to hit and players who feed off the second ball.

I still don’t see the point in selling him but Oblak just signed a new deal at Atletico Madrid so he’s off the market I think De Gea deserves a good contract but he shouldn’t be earning more than Oblak.

It seems like all our players are asking for stupid wages at the moment he’s one of few that has a right to do that.

It is the alexis effect but at a time when we are looking at a big squad overhaul then now is the time to out it right. If de gea wants 350k a week and we offer 200k a week and he won't accept then we let him go, at the right price. This will hopefully send a message to the others.

Exactly, the players are demanding wages beyond what they are showing on the pitch.
