Why do we think Mourinho changed the formation today after the successes against Watford and Arsenal?
Yeah we were poor. The odd little flashes we looked threatening but City were a class above.I'm not that bothered United lost today, I'm more frustrated by how United played and the tactics employed by Mourinho. He got it wrong. There was no structure nor pattern of play and the team reverted to hoof ball.
Yeah I do agree there to a degree, I thought City were brilliant in their ball retention but they had an air of arrogance about them, they thought they could just walk the ball into our net. Arsenal were a lot better but De Gea was world class on the day. We gave City far too much respect and paid for it.Head on the block time. I thought that despite how much of the ball City had they didn’t look as dangerous as Arsenal did last week. Difference being last week we defended better and attacked better. Today we were poor in both areas
If it was me I think I would have picked the exact same side that Jose did, I was arguing with someone in the pub last night who was saying "ah Jose tactics, park the bus, don't attack bla bla bla" and it wound me up a bit because asked him what he would have done differently, couldn't answer it.
You know they will have a lot of the ball and with Rashford Lingard Martial you have pace to burn on the counter, only problem is you don't have that CM who is calm on the ball and can actually beat a man or pick a pass, makes me wonder what difference Pogba would have made but can't do anything about it so no point worrying.
Makes me wonder why Pereira is at Valencia instead of still at us, could have played a 3 in the middle and matched up against them and he can actually take the ball in tight areas and find a man further forward, Matic does what it says on the tin and Herrera just runs around but never really offers to much, I don't think Jose could have done much else yesterday to be fair but our ball retention was horrific, hoofing it up field was pure embarrassing.
I didn't see it, but I listened on the radio.
I don't understand the city phenomenon. Are we saying Pep has come up with a way of playing football there is no way to counter it?
The problem at united is wedon't have the players. Our squad don't match our manager as far as I can tell.
I think yesterday I would have played Shaw and Micki. People who run with the ball, fast.
Our squad is still way short.
A Smalling hoof is about as accurate as a drunk at the urinal after 10 pints, that lad can just about do short passing he's never been able to hit long balls with any consistency it's the major weakness in his game.
There was an interesting bit by Henry during the game where he showed how Pep blocks you in with a ring of players basically making anything other than a hacked clearance impossible the full backs are always up high so you can't target them with long balls and we basically had Lukaku vs two centre backs and Otamendi bullied Lukaku yesterday for a little guy he's very good in the air and this season he's gone from liability to a solid player plus he's chipping in with goals.
Unless you've got players who are brave to take the ball and try to play through the press you're screwed vs City the only way out is going direct but you need to hit accurate passes to a striker who is good at holding the ball up and you need a guy up with I'm at all times to compete for the 2nd ball. Utd tried that yesterday but Lukaku just can't do that hold up role he's no good at it which makes me wonder why we keep using it as a tactic.
I'm not sure matters if Shaw would have to go off afer 60 - 70 mins anf Micki has been off form, maybe being thrown in would have reversed that.
I would have left out Young and Lingard.
It's not really about who I would have added or left out, I think we needed players who could attack, with the ball, at pace, and not just lump it back to them.
The ref annoyed me all game. Booking Herrera for diving but failing to book Sterling or Jesus when they were at it. Silva and Walker both could easily have seen reds.
@jsp That's JM's modus operandi, don't try to make a team worry about my guys, make my guys worry about a team. Not how I want United playing! What was annoying yesterday was City had an obvious weak spot with Delph at left back but Utd didn't seem to have a plan to try and exploit that from an attacking point of view everything about our tactics was how to stop City not how to create a problem for them.
Well the retrospective rules means Jesus should get a 2 game ban
